Player Watch #24: Trent Rivers – midfield gun (imagine my surprise)

Who cares if they hit some nice passes if it costs us as many goals back the other way cause they lose one on ones. Having Bowey and Salem down back means that May or Lever have to intercept every game or we get none. Bowey especially. Can't trust him to play in the goal square against an opponent

Ok, so:

May averages 6.6 intercept possessions per game, Bowey averages 6.0

Bowey (4.8) and Salem (5.6) average the most ground ball gets out of all the defenders. They are both in the top 7 with Oliver, Trac, Viney, Brayshaw and Hunter.

McVee (11.8) and Bowey (12.5) have the best defensive one on one loss %.

Salem is the highest rated defender for pressure acts with 12.8 per game.

Salem is the highest rated defender for contested possessions (6.9), next best defender is Lever, and then guess who? Bowey (5.5).

As for Bowey playing in the goal square.... Far out... I mean that's like saying we should be worried about May because we can't trust him to play on an opponent running inside 50, like imagine him trying to chase for example Rohan or someone like that, might be trouble hey?

Nah all of this is way away from my original point, never said Bowey wasn't a good player but if I'm picking my best 22 I'm not sticking him in the backline that's not how I see him playing his best footy in his career. If anyone here thinks Boweys a better one on one defender than May because the stats say so then what I'm even bothering arguing for. Bowey can clearly be exploited for his height. He'd be much more effective in the Spargo role for us and someone else targeted who can play in defence.

I'm 100% with you on the Bowey forward for Spargo move, been banging on about it most of the season. I'm just not sure why you seem to think the only version of defensive one on ones is key forwards v either May or Bowey? It's just not how it works, he's not lining up on Walker this week. As the stats indicate, Bowey is a ground ball defensive player who wins those one on ones and wins contested possessions - This is vital to what you need in a backline defensive mix, especially in our team where May, Lever and Petty are all poor in ground ball contests. Just don't get where this 'Bowey playing in the goal square' stuff is coming from other than in your own mind.

I didn't say he played in the goal square mate. It's a move the opposition can exploit though in a final, he absolutely can't get dragged deep and I don't think Salem is any good at it either. So when May and Lever get dragged up having 2 guys who aren't specialist defenders but are there for their attacking play is a whole and oppo coach can exploit.

Better email the club mate, Chaplin probably hasn't thought about this at all.... :D

Bowey could be dragged to the goal square, May could be dragged up the ground, Gawn could be jumped into all day, Brown could be run away from, Spargo could be made to kick for goal from more than 40m out, Clarry could be tagged.... And on and on... Must be why we have training and coaches hey?

Tell you what, if Bowey gets dragged one on one to the goal square and gets multiple goals kicked on him then I'll tip my hat to you, but until then I'll continue to watch our role based backline all play to their strengths.

Hopefully though an oppo coach doesn't read your post and think 'Wow, why didn't I think of this?!'

Not sure about that stat that's getting posted, I'd like to see those 17 contests to see what they're actually talking about. But when I think about small defenders in one on ones, Nev Jetta comes to mind before Bowey.

When I think of Bowey I think of the third link in the chain finding someone on the wing after our defence wins back the ball.

One-On-One Contest: A 50-50 contest that occurs after a kick, and involves only two players – a target player and a defender. Each player must have a reasonable chance to win the ball in order for a one-on-one to be recorded. Winning and losing percentages refer to how often a player wins the ball or concedes a possession to his opponent. A neutral result is recorded when the ball is spoiled or results in a stoppage.

You're living rent free in your own head....
Are you even actually reading that? Cause if you did youd realize you ****ed up.

Can't trust him in the goal square, yeah you can't

He gets dragged to the square and we are ****ed. That's a hypothetical mate, here's a stat 0% win rate on goes at topkent today for you

Which is why you're living rent free in your own head. You're imaging scenarios that haven't happened and then criticising a player based on these imaginary scenarios.

Nah, just used it as an argument for why I don't want him long term in our back 6/7. That's pretty simple stuff mate, if you think his best position is back 6 then tell me, if you're arguing for no reason at all let's just move on then

"I know defensive one on ones is a real stat that the official AFL stat partner uses 2 people at every game to measure and analyze, but what about all those goal square one on ones that Bowey lost in my mind!"

TopKent. Probably.
