Just what was said. Spoke to him again and he said he thinks it was 18 'charges' likely to result in an 18 week penalty. Then said AFL wanted more but NM and TT pushed back so 18 was a compromise.

Interesting here is if we did push back on the suspension, that doesn't sound like we want to cut ties. Why would you bother if you were cutting him? Let's see what the club say now.

Why would these details not have been revealed during the original investigation and court proceedings by Tarryn or the accuser? If they're serious enough to warrant an 18 week suspension, they probably could have been pretty handy back then for her as well.
He was with the girl during the investigation last year mate. He is no longer with her now.

Take of that what you will.

For all of the conjecture about how long this has taken and what the charges were, the AFL wouldn't be handing down an 18 week penalty without some strong evidence of domestic abuse, this can't be text messages anymore.

If he's actually physically assaulted someone then we should be using all avenues to delist him before the season, the club has given him enough support. Let his next club wear the 18 game suspension, North have done enough for him.
I can't recall one time ever that someone has been banned and the public didn't know the details of why.

Probably suggests it's a pretty ugly situation and that both the AFL and TT would prefer wasn't publicly known.

Viney has been clear on what's expected so I'd trust that they do what is right.

Sure, but my point is it makes no sense as presented. I suspect it's the "don't want to reveal more" but perhaps gk should have clarified that.

I've got plenty of imagination to think of a whole lot of convoluted scenarios, but I also have the commonsense to dismiss the highly implausible ones the way I did with your list.
just swallow your pride and say thanks GK for the info :p

You’d think the AFL will have to provide some details of what he’s suspended for.

Whatever it is the AFL wouldn’t be handing out an 18 week whack without incontrovertible proof.

just swallow your pride, say thanks for the info and move on

LOL. I was always respectful in my interactions with gokangas unlike quite a few others. I acknowledged he has sources but just queried the weird part.

You seem salty. I assume it's because I showed your suggestions were ridiculous.

Well hopefully TT can learn from his mistakes and behave like a better person going forwards.

But from a NMFC perspective it's time to move on and focus on the talent we have.

I'm relieved to hear the result but interested to hear more details. I wouldn't be surprised if we hear very little, officially.

If it is 18 weeks and you start the clock at when he was first away from training (Jan 19) the he would be back for the Port game in round 11.

if it is 18 games and he cannot play until round 19 it would be more like July 20.

all kinds of f***ed from a club perspective either way you slice it.

Props to GK info was solid.

18-match ban

Troubled North Melbourne player Tarryn Thomas has been suspended for 18 weeks following an investigation into alleged inappropriate behaviour.

It can be revealed the AFL Commission ratified the penalty, which will be served in its entirety.

It means Thomas will not be available for selection until Round 20, leaving him just four games at most to prove he deserves another contract at the Roos.

This is, of course, presuming the Kangaroos decide to keep him on their list. North Melbourne declined to comment when contacted on Monday afternoon.

In July Thomas went to court but avoided sanction for threatening to distribute intimate videos of his former partner.

These latest allegations are independent of any previous allegations. It's understood the AFL was planning to release a statement as early as Tuesday following an AFL Integrity Unit investigation into his alleged behaviour.

l'm all for keeping him on the list but play him in the VFL and even if his attitude and form improved leave him there for most of the season. We need to have a team that will jell together for this and other years ahead. If TT gets into the team does he unbalance the teams playing ability by having him there, plus also there is no way knowing if he stays after this year...For me the risk is to high especially for the amount of young kids we will be trying to develop.

18 weeks for something that isn't serious enough for the Police to get involved seems a little weird to me.

The AFL says its investigation into Tarryn Thomas’ latest breaches are ongoing as North Melbourne braces for a long ban which could wipe out most of his 2024 season.
But the AFL has denied it has suspended him for 18 weeks despite reports on Monday, saying the investigation is continuing.

This masthead reported last week the Roos were bracing for a lengthy ban given the significance of his latest transgressions, which came to light after a female came forward to the AFL integrity department in early January.

While Thomas attempted to explain his actions in a meeting with the AFL integrity team a lengthy suspension of over half the season seems likely.

The league told this masthead on Monday it had not come to a resolution of the Thomas matter yet.

The AFL often works with clubs on a likely outcome so it would not surprise if a figure as high as 18 weeks had been discussed among all parties.

Until the AFL hands down its findings, the Roos will continue to wait, as Thomas trains away from the club.

The Roos have clearly run out of patience with Thomas from a long-term perspective and as they seek to improve their culture it seems extremely unlikely he will be at North Melbourne next season.

A lengthy ban would also throw into doubt a potential AFL return this year at Arden Street given he would need to spend time in the VFL to prove his fitness.

Thomas is in the last season of a lucrative contract that pays him around $600,000 this season.

But if he did secure a ban of over half the season the Roos would have a tough decision about whether to potentially look to end his contract or keep him on the list as a player who could be traded in the off-season.

North Melbourne on Monday vowed to dissect the full findings of the AFL integrity department’s probe when it did arrive to decide if he had a future at Arden Street.

Kangaroos footy boss Todd Viney said on Monday the club had not been privy to the fresh allegations and would need some time to work through the findings.

“The reality is we haven’t had the information of what has happened on this last investigation,” Viney said.

“We will take our time to have a look at that (the findings) and see what the AFL has found and have some time to think about our next position.”

The Kangaroos would have to decide if Thomas’s behaviour across the past few seasons could be detrimental to the club’s playing culture, particularly with a young crop of players.

Viney said the Kangaroos had remained in constant contact with Thomas during the process, even though he has been training away from the club.

“We have had conversations with him … from the mental wellbeing space to see how he is travelling, particularly because he has been away from the club for a long while now.

“It has obviously been taking some time, it has been driven by the AFL and we just haven;’t had the information through this process.

“So until the AFL finalises their information we are in the dark really. We (have been) really comfortable with the time frame, given the nature of the allegations … because you have to do the right thing.”

The league through its regulations has the power to penalise players through its conduct unbecoming rule.

Thomas last year was initially charged with threatening to distribute an intimate image of another person, with the charge then downgraded by prosecutors to using a carriage service to harass someone.

Thomas escaped a criminal conviction after being granted a diversion and was ordered to pay $1000 to charity.

But it was one of a series of allegations over inappropriate conduct towards women, with Thomas also spending time away from Arden Street over his failure to make progress with the club’s respectful behaviour education program.

He was initially suspended by the Roos last February over “serious and confronting” threats of violence towards women, with more females then coming forward to detail allegations in subsequent weeks.

The AFL has the powers to deregister players but even Ben Cousins was only suspended for 12 months after being arrested for drug possession in 2007 and refusing to submit to a blood test.

The Roos have been desperate to work with Thomas to better him as a human being who can also have a long and successful career at Arden Street under Alastair Clarkson.

But as a No.8 draft pick with huge potential, if they did lose him they would also be keen for some draft compensation from a rival club.

The latest developments throw that scenario into doubt given his career is hanging by a thread.

nah one of those scenarios was definitely the source! but only GK can confirm :p
