absolutely as he's not coming back to the club and playing next season regardless of whether we want him or not.

Doesn't look good BUT, see the below statement from the Magistrate. Is the AFL a higher authority than the courts? If its an old misdemeanour from the past, there is a chance for him but it depends on how bad it is and you'd have to assume pretty bad if the AFL slapped him with 18 weeks. BUT there is always a chance it can be managed if truly he has reformed.

If its new, then sorry tata. Sounds like Viney, Jen, and Sonja have their work cut out for them again.

In July, a charge was dropped after he agreed to donate $1000 to charity, having been charged with threatening to distribute an intimate image of another person.

“You have obviously taken this matter very seriously,” Magistrate Julie Grainger said, accepting Thomas had taken responsibility for his actions and was working to change.

“You have worked really hard to better yourself.”

Tell me they automatically deregistered without telling me the deregistered him.

Deregistration

Under the official AFL Deregistration Policy first implemented in May 2011, any player who accumulates a total of at least 10 weeks of suspensions over the course of their football career (both inside and outside the AFL) receives a formal notice that further suspensions can result in their automatic deregistration from the league.

Any player who accumulates a total of 16 weeks or more of suspensions over the course of their career will be automatically deregistered and barred from any further participation. Any previous suspensions within the AFL are carried over at 75% of their original length (e.g. a previous suspension of four weeks will only count as three weeks under this policy), but any immediate suspension is to be considered at its full length. If any player receives an immediate first suspension of 16 weeks or more, deregistration is left at the discretion of the league.

A deregistered player may apply for an exemption to re-register or appeal the deregistration under the appropriate laws of the league after 12 months. However, only one request can be made. Should a player be exempted and re-registered, any further suspension will result in permanent, irrevocable deregistration.[3]

Deregistration is only practiced in country and suburban football competitions; it is not practiced by the AFL as of 2022,[4] since the deregistration policy was designed for serial aggressive offenders, not low-level repeat offenders: in the event, there has not been a serial aggressive offender issue at AFL level since the mid-1990s.[5]

THE AFL says the 16-game suspension rule which ended Ali Fahour’s suburban footy career is not required at the elite level.
Fahour was slapped with a lifetime ban by the Northern Football League tribunal last week because his 14-week penalty lifted his tribunal record above the threshold enforced by AFL Victoria.
An AFL spokesperson said there were two reasons the 16-match deregistration policy did not apply at the elite level.

“One, there is a much greater level of scrutiny on AFL matches with camera coverage, the ability to lay reports and much stricter rules where players can be suspended for incidents that will often not be picked up at lower levels, where this policy was designed for serial aggressive offenders, not low-level repeat offenders.

“Two, we do not believe there has been a repeat offender issue at AFL level over the last 20 years where a player has been getting repeated, long suspensions for repeated behind-play offences.

And what's going to make this even worse is that next year, we'll have to watch him running around in another jumper, potentially as a reformed, young man. If he ever reaches his full potential, it's going to be awfully hard to watch.
I'm not sure why people think he can turn his life (career) around, nothing to date suggests he can or even wants to. This ban proves that he didn't learn from his previous mistakes. If the counter to that is this ban will finally make the penny drop for him I'm still not convinced. He would have know full well any further indiscretions could potentially destroy his career and yet here we are.

Don’t think we’ll see him in a north jumper again. Which is a damn shame considering how much development and time we’ve put into him,

Watch him go to Geelong or Collingwood next year for peanuts. Then he’ll have success at that club that picks him up and they will be painted as the good guys who provided him with the right amount of support so that he could flourish.
Surely he is done in Victoria?

I hope he goes to Port Adelaide so we can channel the hate.

Just sack him and ask the AFL nicely if we can fill the list spot with a SPP.

The absolute blue & white bullshit people are spewing in here is ridiculous. They are reported to be different allegations to his court ones.

It must be new allegations just has to be with a hefty suspension imminent.

Part of me would love for the club to stick with him because he is an elite talent and he obviously needs good support around him.

But I think sadly we are at the untenable stage and we need to invest in young men who have the character plus the ability to succeed.

It's pretty clear from the little we've seen outside in that his emotions control too much of his actions. I'm sure he intellectually gets it, but can't seem to learn the skills to control his behaviour and avoid situations that trigger his lesser instincts.

He might want to and genuinely mean to do better, like someone who really wants to give up smoking - but lights up the minute someone offers them one. Assuming this is all true the whole situation is just sad and a waste without even bringing the football side into it.

Surely the timing of the allegations matter. They can be fresh but not recent can’t they?

The kool aid is strong in this case.

People seriously believe the AFL have plucked the largest suspension out of a hat in years and years because of a conspiracy.

I think the AFL, North and the AFLPA along with Tarryn need to do a joint press conference detailing everything as clearly as possible. Whatever the penalty so be it!!! but as paid members we are entitled to know why one of our best players has been suspended. I am sure they will do this. If not it’s a joke of the highest degree

There’s also a victim in this, which isn’t related to football at all. So no, you don’t NEED to know the exact circumstances.

We still don’t know anything officially.

Different but we don't know when they happened or the nature of the actions, and that's key information. Judging by the length of the suspension, probably recently, but we don't know because it hasn't been reported.

I just don't want to hang the guy when we've got so little to go off of.

I think this is perfectly summed him up.

And also why I think **** it, north, no one will begrudge you from sticking out and helping the incompetent.

Why didn't the club announce an 18 week suspension in November? I'm outraged by this. Why couldn't it have been Powell or Will Phil or Hansen Jr? It had to be one of our most talented players didn't it?

Is NMFC genuinely cursed?

Is the Carey Curse legit ala the Curse of Babe?

After the last 4 years and the light now appearing at the end of the tunnel, this is a distraction going forward we do not need.
Innocent ? / Guilty ? Who cares. Thanks, sort of Tarryn, but I for one don't care any more;
. Sheezel
. Wardlaw
. McKercher
. Duursma
If you can revive your career somewhere else, good for you.

That would be

Sorry are you suggesting TT punched and assaulted his partner with a belt like Elijah Taylor did and was found to be guilty by an actual court of law? If so where did you get the information as to my knowledge nothing has been published nor any convictions upheld?

Depends how you approach DV. Do you judge all DV equally or do you have different levels or grades of DV?

18 weeks for something that isn't serious enough for the Police to get involved seems a little weird to me.

Depends if the victim went to the police. While it would surprise me she’d trust the AFL, there are definitely a large set of minorities (gay, Indigenous, etc) who have had nothing but historical bad interactions with police and don’t want anything to do with them due to trust issues.

There is a person in TT’s recent life who could fit that bill.

After re-reading the two articles again, and listening to the McGuire cross, I think the AFL is just face-saving. "The investigation is continuing" probably just means "we're not ready to announce it to the public just yet".

It seems like the club and Thomas received some missive from the commission today that basically says "we propose to do this... wrap up the investigation... hand Thomas an 18 week penalty... announce it publicly tomorrow." Giving the club half a day to get its own ducks in a row, work out how they'll going to address it, etc.

McGuire made the point that the club will be putting out a statement tonight, so its not like nothing has happened. And if you re-read Viney's comments, it sounds like the AFL's missive arrived in his inbox about that same time as it arrived in Tom Morris':

"We will take our time to have a look at that (the findings) and see what the AFL has found and have some time to think about our next position."

Also interesting this unattributed line from Jon Ralph:

The Roos have clearly run out of patience with Thomas from a long-term perspective and as they seek to improve their culture it seems extremely unlikely he will be at North Melbourne next season.

We still don’t know anything officially.
It's really disappointing that the club is as "in the dark" as we are, yet the media are announcing an 18-match suspension. The AFL needs to take a long hard look inhouse, it leaks like sieve.
