Past #26: Tarryn Thomas [Part III] - 18 week suspension confirmed; ineligible to play in '24 season; NMFC has officially sacked Tarryn.

The club is saying they have no information regarding the new allegations, yet apparently they have already decided Tarryn will never play for North again? So much bullshit to sift through.

All I know is the first time it was taken to the cops and downgraded to some bullshit charge and dropped anyway (i.e. not DV). This time around Tarryn was interviewed by the "integrity" unit for 2 hours and apparently is now going to be handed an 18 week suspension. We still don't know what Tarryn has done. I don't know how anyone can be satisfied with this process?

Good grief no, surely not.

If he ends up there then the police must surely be involved.

We all (or most of us) know who used to spend time in a "Tibetan Monastery". And now he is no longer here. Unless he is behaving himself under a very heavily disguised alias.
Ahh yes forgot about old Snake and his adventures haha

Was more thinking that Tarryn needs to go somewhere without distraction and temptation, to sort himself out.

Move him on, the club is bigger than the individual. There have been plenty of first round busts over the years that clubs invest their resources into and get minimal return. Even talented players can still be a bust if they aren't able to handle their life outside of footy.

Essendon great Matthew Lloyd fears troubled North Melbourne star Tarryn Thomas will be “one of the most wasted talents we’ve ever seen” in footy as a huge suspension looms.

The Kangaroos player is being investigated by the AFL Integrity Unit for another set of allegations of inappropriate off-field behaviour made by a woman.

While Nine reported the AFL Commission has handed down an 18-week suspension for Thomas, which would be one of the longest in modern footy history, other outlets said the length of the ban - while expected to encompass at least half a season - has not yet been cemented. An AFL spokesperson told Foxfooty.com.au the investigation was ongoing.

Whatever the punishment, Thomas is out of contract at the end of 2024 and despite his talent would seem unlikely to continue his AFL career, given he has already been handed several chances by the Kangaroos for previous incidents including accusations of “serious and confronting” threats of violence towards women.

Pointing to the troubled career of the former No.2 pick who battled injuries and off-field concerns through an 88-game career, Lloyd said on 3AW: “I put him in the Harley Bennell bracket.

“He’ll (Thomas) be lost to football. He’ll be one of the most wasted talents that we’ve ever seen in the game.”

Lloyd revealed he had spent the day at Arden Street as part of an off-the-record media session with Kangaroos officials.

“Tarryn Thomas was asked (about) and you could sense the way they were talking that it had been a draining issue for them,” he said.

“It’s been left in the hands of the AFL; they were expecting to hear three weeks ago what was going to be happening.

“I remember John Quinn, our long-time fitness coach at the Bombers, said there was one particular player that he said I spent 90 per cent of my time dealing with his issues and his matters as a head of strength and conditioning coach. So for 40 other players, who are doing all the right things, I’m spending 10% of my time on them.

“I raised this with North, it was just a candid chat, and I could see a few nods saying yep, I can understand what you’re saying because that’s been Tarryn Thomas. We’re forever being sidetracked by issues when we want to put all our energies into getting ourselves back on our feet as a football club, yet we’re constantly dealing with off-field matters with Tarryn Thomas.”

Thomas has played 69 AFL matches since being taken with the No.8 pick in the 2018 draft.

Llordo was at training yesterday too.

I'm sensing a coordinated campaign by us to wedge the AFL into reducing his sentence.

The "Thomas is becoming a distraction" line is a common assertion, but I don't believe it for a moment.

Supporters are fixated on it. The media are obsessed with it. But I am certain the playing group and coaches are not.

Charlie Lazzaro isn't running around at the intra-club game thinking about TT.

Will Phillips isn't struggling to train because he can't get TT out of his mind.

Tom Powell isn't distracted from his preparation for the preseason hit-out with Collingwood by worries about TT.

For the first time in years we have genuine competition for spots. The playing group are worrying about putting their best foot forward, not about the welfare of TT.

And as for the coaching group, they've been planning 2024 as if TT is not around. Trust me, they're assuming no TT. And if it turns out that we have him, well then that's a bonus.

TT is a lot of things, but he's not a distraction to anyone but those outside the club.

Disagree with this

If players are constantly asked about it by media , wondering if he’s training today or not, taking up disproportionate internal resources etc etc. …..then players will notice

When it came out last year that the club didn’t think he was taking whatever course they sent him on last year seriously ? A: They should have F’d him off then

Not just players of course. The tipping point, more or less, for Clarko last year was when the female journalist pestered him about TT and he snapped back with a regrettable response. But no distraction.

I don't think it's that complex. I think the AFL has decided, and Morris got the scoop.

harassing someone with a carriage service is abuse, and IS DV.

I was just thinking earlier this morning about how much his success must mean to his mob, how proud they must be.

Even if he never steps out on a footy field again, ya just hope his life doesn't turn out like his brother's.

I know we're just a footy club, but the decision to cut him loose is bigger than Tarryn and footy.

Its a bloody conundrum mate.

I’m just confused why the cops aren’t involved then? Or have they said it’s not worthy of punishment? This is all confusing
Dunno, no details on this one, just talking about last years stuff

Nothing strange about that, I bought my kids a rabbit they named it Strawberry 6mths later the rabbit disappeared but the kids enjoyed the ‘strawberry’ pie we had for tea that night. 😀
Good work Elmer!

I wonder how much information about what he actually has done will be available to the general public. I am not defending him, as he clearly does have issues, especially given how little is known about the incident, but I will say that 18 weeks is a very heavy suspension for a mysterious act that's apparently not worthy of police attention.
