I seriously doubt that. But that's Essendon and Richmond.

Essendon and Richmond both have form drawing sub 30,000 attendances to fixtures (for Essendon does 2010 ring a bell?)

That said both clubs who struggle to draw 50,000 crowds against non Victorian clubs ;)...half our members might be pets but they do rock up on the off occasion.

Any Hawthorn supporter that says they don't need Tasmania is delusional.

Be very careful son, your mob is another 5 game losing streak away from possible extinction.. the football world is a fickle place, ensure your own backyard is looked after before commenting to much on others.

Melbourne home game attendances for the season...

Melbourne V Port Adelaide - 22,924
Melbourne V West Coast - 18,571
Melbourne V GWS - 20,018
Melbourne V Gold Coast - 13,018
Melbourne V Hawthorn - 28,546

Admittedly the Hawthorn game was the only higher drawing game amongst the lot (the average home and away game between the clubs has drawn 42,800 over the last 10 meetings) but the Demon crowds are falling off the cliff...at this rate QB may only draw 50,000 or there abouts.

That is a horrendous draw for a club trying to make any money.

Add to that the dees have pies, dogs, swans, lions, north and freo as their remaining home games. Good luck making any money out of that. Fixture is a complete farce.

I seriously doubt that. But that's Essendon and Richmond. Hawthorn are a different kettle of fish.

Round 17, 2004 suggests you in most probability know little about what you are talking about...

Richmond V Melbourne - 25,211

Admittedly Hawthorn drew just 11,682 the previous round (which resulted in Schwab getting the bullet) but even with that disastrous attendance we still managed 28,392 against Melbourne in round 18.

...Tiger fans, best fans in all the world...just don't mention the Jack Dyer memorial game in 2003:rolleyes:

Just pointing out that there are many Hawthorn supporters that see the Tasmanian sponsorship/4 games as unneccessary impediment. They are clearly wrong. It is probably the best sponsorship deal in the AFL and perfect for a mid teir Melbourne club, for a myriad of reasons, and will be especially evident when the club goes through a down turn in form.

28, 546? The Breakdown as follows:

1, 000 Melbourne Members
4,000 Hawthorn Members
1 Hawthorn 'Tassie' Members
1,000 Hawthorn 'Pet' Members
15,000 Free Passes
5,000 Other supporters (why??)
545 AusKick players, officials and families
2,000 MCG staff (except no-one in the 'G' car park)

Perhaps, does the same apply to Carlton (who drew a smaller gate in almost the identical round last year?)

That said given the club has the 2nd largest revenue, membership and balance sheet its hardly life and death. With the way Hawthorn is now set up (and given they haven't made a financial loss since 1996) the strength of Hawthorn can more than withstand a shift in sponsorship agreements.

I posted this in the crowds thread...

Round 1 2013 - Hawthorn V Geelong: 76,300
Round 3 2013 - Collingwood V Hawthorn: 72,254
Round 5 2013 - Hawthorn V North Melbourne: 42,103
Round 7 2013 - Hawthorn V Sydney Swans: 54,725
Round 9 2013 - Hawthorn V Gold Coast: 28,113
Round 10 2013 - Melbourne V Hawthorn: 28,524

How many supporters went to round 1 and 7 but skipped round 10?

Hmmm, just because membership goes up doesn't have to equate to your crowd numbers increasing or indeed them all consistently turning up.

Feel enlighten my poor Dees man. :D

Didn't Andrew Demetriou himself categorically rule this out as a factor that affects crowd numbers a few years ago?

I mean really, for people who had no plans to attend the game, who looks at the TV guide and goes "Oh hang on, the game is a delayed telecast by an hour on tele. Lets rush off to the MCG and pay to watch it live instead"? By the same token, who has tickets to the game or plans on going, and upon finding out the game is live on television and not a delayed telecast, drops their plans and just stays home and watches on television instead? Very, very, very few people I would imagine. It's a ridiculous concept to think it's anywhere near a widespread factor in attendances IMO.
I think there is probably a small percentage that would choose to not go to a game on late Sunday afternoon in winter to watch an incredibly one sided game that they can watch live and have dinner on the table by 6.30. Certainly a lot of people I know don't do much on Sunday afternoon/night because of commitments on Monday

Our crowd numbers are indeed shit, but a good counter argument against us being fair weathered is that the storm clouds have never been darker, and our membership has grown. From a membership point of view, our ratio of supporters:members is the best in the AFL.

Clubs should be judged on their membership numbers/revenue instead of just crowds. They've paid their money towards the club.

AFL like to spruik about how crowd numbers equating to success of the game. So low crowd figures should equate to the game being poor, rather than just Melbourne.

At the moment, seems like big crowd = AFL going well.

Poor crowd = Home team need to pick up their game.
