Not best 22 at present.

Would like to see him use this high level of fitness to get it 30 times in the vfl for the first month of the season.

Force his way in or not
Yeah strongly agree with this.

A couple of strong preseason games could get him there but you certainly don't become best 22 from a few nice match sim highlights.

I get the feeling that our best 22 will be very dependent on pre season form, attitude etc rather than previous years forms and reputations. Clean slate for everyone

He keeps showing up as one of the better performers in the pre-season then red hot chance for Rd1

There's never really that many spots up for grabs realistically, there are plenty of spots pretty much guaranteed if fit.

its realistically always going to be those final 5-8 spots up for grabs.

He offers a point of difference in midfield imo.

We don't really have an in and under extractor like him.

I agree. I think there's absolutely a place for Will Phillips in our core midfield rotation of LDU/Wardlaw/Sheezel/Powell/Parker etc.

He's particularly good in those stoppages centre forward.

He either creates for another to have a clear inside 50 or shot, or he uses those deft little pop kicks of his as a high quality inside 50.

I genuinely have him in the top 5 for who I would want kicking our forward 50 entries/link ups on our entire list.

Me too.

His issue has been getting involved in enough of those chains, then getting back.

But he's worked his hole off over summer and seems to have got the results.

Last year Charlie Laz hard work over summer was rewarded with a decent run at it early doors, I hope Will gets a similar opportunity.

This boy will leave no stone unturned

Come back to this preseason in ripping nick and worked on his running. According to the reports he is everywhere.

Tagging role again perhaps?

Hope so; he blanketed Daicos and then well the rest is you know…

It is going to be tight for spots. You have to add Jy and Colby in there as well. It seems Jy and Parker may start forward, which leaves Larkey, Curtis, Zurhaar and Darling plus perhaps one of Ford or Duursma on the bench. There is usually a rotational defender on the bench too. That means only 2 spots on the bench for "midfield types". Powell would be one of those if we start LDU/Wardlaw/Sheezel in the middle and have Colby on the wing. If Scott has the other wing, then the question is if that last spot is someone who can be flexible on a wing/HB or if they would go with a pure mid considering Jy and Parker are the in and under rotations and Powell and Colby the classier outside.

Good problem to have.

Another pre-season stand out. Has been head down ass up all pre season. His teammates and the coaches have been thrilled with the inroads he has been making.

WAP has never been a bad trainer by any means but there has been a notable shift in his intensity, everything has been at 100%. He really is leaving no stone unturned.

This is his 2nd pre-season where he has had no interruptions and it's really showing.

Fingers crossed for him (and us) that it translates on game day.

LDU, Sheezel, Powell, Wardlaw, Parker, Simpkin, McKercher.

He’ll have to force his way in through a sustained period of VFL dominance, injury-permitting.

I'm sure that is the exact response the club was looking for.....as opposed to others who just lacked the work ethic and committment. I am so hopeful he locks down a role round 1 and doesn't look back and is rewarded with a longer contract.

Playing Phillips allows Sheezel’s more time up forward and LDU more space to run and hurt out of a contest.

It just makes sense.
