Basti isnt worth much on the trade table if everyone wants him in the 2's. I'd drop him for 6 weeks and bring him back for some games at the end to bulk up his trade value and ship him off. Such a soft footballer...Gibson has taken his role

He should be an improved version of Gibson, he also has the tank to run all day but has superior skills, atm there is a massive difference in hunger between the two, or that is what it looks like from the outside looking in.

Great point.

Gibson seems everywhere at once. Bastinac is always 5 metres off where hee needs to be,

Gibbo's best strength is his workrate, it is something Anthony did well also, put yourself in a good position to receive the ball. He just seems to be in no-man's land a lot not sure if he should go in or if he should try to receive, flat footed too much for my liking.

Gibson is a smart, smart footballer, tt's no accident that he is always in position to receive - workrate + football intelligence. Really pleased he's getting some external and internal credit.

Bastinac will be okay, this is a mini-rocket for him and hopefully he'll be better for the challenge.

I put it to this board that Bastinac has played more good games for the club than Ziebell. He has certainly played more good games than Greenwood, MacMillan, Atley and Harper. Get them all on the trade table.

You can put it to the board. But you'd be wrong.

I don't care how many touches he gets, or the bad kicks etc - its the blatant softness that needs sorting out.

He doesn't go when his turn and has been for too long - despite excellent running ability and solid positioning to get the footy.

Go back to VFL, earn a game (overdue) and start taking hits and playing for the jumper.

He was sulking yesterday.

Ive never seen a sub so disinterested.

I'm not sure about sulking but I do remember thinking that he didn't look like he was going full tilt in that last quarter which surprised me. I know the game was over but, having been demoted to sub, I'd have thought Bastinac would have come on and played like a man possessed in order to prove the doubters wrong and win back his starting spot.

Instead, he barely touched it and had a few half-arsed attempts at chases and tackles.

If he gets a game this weekend it will only be because he has such a good record against Geelong. Scott will be rewarding history rather than form or endeavour.

On the brink of being dropped and I for one think that would be a good thing, he isnt bringing anything at present, just because you have a big contract it doesnt entitle you to get comfortable and not perform, off to the magoos to earn your spot son!

Interesting that a bloke who spent years in the VFL that we got for almost nothing is displacing a younger, high draft pick. Hype and talent alone dosn't make a footballer. I'm all respect for Gibbo who now not only gets a regular game but is racking up possessions and kicking the occasional goal as well. All respect for Thomas too who was a low draft pick, likewise Thompson. Basti needs to play VFL and work out how he's going to get some respect.

We can afford to drop him. We're no longer in the position where we need to keep playing spoilt brats who prance around like millionaires, because of the number they went at the draft when they were 18 because 'they need experience so they're good one day'.

That 'one day' is here, and at this stage I'd play someone like Liam Anthony over Bastinac. There's plenty of competition from underneath for these coveted spots, and if someone's going to come on in the last quarter put in a half-a*sed effort against the bottom side, well then, they need to go away and re-earn their stripes, and reconsider what the stripes mean to them.

Unless of course he had gastro or some other virus. This would explain appearing to be half-a*sed and not playing very well, and would also explain leaving him off for the majority of the game. Still though, better options around right now. When Wells returns he has to be on thin ice. Has to be.

He currently doesn't have a big contract. His current contract finishes at the end of this year. I highly doubt basti is the type to rest on his laurels just because he got solid contract 3 years ago

Oh no you dittint!

I think someone had to say it and play the Liam Anthony card. He plays the same role. Anthony's been racking them up in the twos. He's doing what he's been asked.

With Bastinac, I wonder what he's being asked to do by the coaches. A 'run with' type. Those sort of assignments could explain not winning it much. He's not meant to win it. But to be an option, although Gibbo seems to be doing that a lot better. I confess I just don't know enough to say whether Basti is doing what he'd told or not doing enough.

One thing though, Basti is still cleaner with his handballs than LA. I was going to say by foot as well, but it's been a bit iffy this year. Still, if LA does get in the side, break out the clanger alarm. I hope, truthfully, he can improve. That's probably what's keeping him out at AFL level, getting the ball to his team mates and putting it to their advantage. Pressure. Anyway, bold call!

Deserves to be dropped, but bringing back Liam Anthony is silly-talk, his papers have been stamped, happy to give another kid a go e.g. Dumont:thumbsu:

Yeah, doesn't need to be Anthony necessarily. Whoever is proving themselves in the reserves should get a chance.

If Anthony was in the seniors playing the way Basti has been, the sharks would have been circling long ago.

I am happy to see Anthony racking up some hard ball numbers on the weekend, was one of his weaknesses. I didn't watch the game though so not sure if his decision making with the ball also improved or not.

I think the problem is that he is the silk in a VFL team whereas he is a meat and potatoes guy in an AFL side, for him to have AFL value he has to be able to turn his disposals into hitting short range targets and setting up so that better users of the ball have the ball when they are going inside 50.

If he is ticking all the boxes then I am not opposed to him replacing someone who needs time in the VFL to find form and confidence.

Second this, good points, I fell that he can offer the same if not better spread than what Basti is offering atm.

Yeah I would think this was crazy a month ago but Anthony is killing the two's, 30+ possies and 11 tackles! Not quiet Tom Mitchell but...

Well then Anthony it is, can't believe I'm even saying it.

You just have to reward effort don't you?

Players come in and out of form, decisions have to be made.

We'd all love Harper, for example, to be tearing it up in the AFL. But he's not. And this year, a discard from a side currently sitting 16th I think (Nahas, Richmond) gets his chance, and should keep his spot. Based on effort and intensity. He has done a very good job. Obviously we'd love the guy who is capable of the mercurial to show his stuff, but if he's not now, we have to try other things.

Doesn't mean he never will or that he's crap. We just have to start thinking of "now" instead of the future all the time.

I doubt Scott will drop a player he considered on the verge of being "a really top-level, A-grade midfielder".

Reckon that conclusion was made at the same time he considered Petrie the best defensive forward in the comp.

I suspect McMahon and/or Wright will go first, but if he does pull the trigger on Bastinac it will be a welcome change to not just shuffle the usual suspects.
