Id like to see Ryan in, preferably not for Miller. It took that long for Miller to debut. He choked that kick but was ok otherwise.
Miller is probably squeezed out of the back line when Tarrant/Gibcus returns anyhow.
I was amazed at Millers shot on goal against the blues. He is a good field kick but put the goal posts in front of him and his kicking turns to mud. Someone needs to tell him to just ignore the goals and kick it to the guy in the third row

The same goes for literally every footballer. They could kick to kick with their mate and never miss their chest from 45 meters away for an hour. Put them in front of a goal with 85k people there and kicking directly over a man on the mark (the biggest factor) they turn to water.

I'm worried about our forwardline balance atm. Dimma is too eager to try and play all our quality midfielders all at once and our team is starting to look like an All Australian 'line up' - midfielders playing out of position just so they can be included. I think it is giving us greater depth at the coal face but its throwing out our forwardline balance.

I think we are at our most dangerous when we have two small/mid sized pressure forwards. Without them, teams bound out of our F50 too quickly, take it through the corridor and into their attack far too easily. MJR is a lock in the team for this reason. He may not be a massive offensive weapon but the goals he creates through turnovers and pressure (actual & perceived) is fundamental to our game style. But, he can't do it on his own. This is why they brought in Mansell instead of Cumberland. I hope to hell that Cumberland quickly demonstrates his defensive skills to Dimma so he can be straight back in because he is an infinitely better player than Mansell at this stage.

Jack used to be a defensive beast too. He would run down opposition, harass and do the team thing. His goals were often secondary to what he could generate through being unselfish. I feel he has lost this of late. Not through lack of intent but just through reduced closing speed, agility and strength. This is where I feel we should be transitioning Sampson Ryan into the team.

Jack should be rested in blocks. Lynch too. When they are out, Ryan should be in. So, as long as injuries don't force our hand I'd have Jack recuperating during rounds 6-9 & 16-18 and Lynch resting 10 - 14. This would give Ryan and good run at it (12 games) while still giving him time to rest himself. It would also give both Jack and Lynch time together but also time to build up to the finals.

I'm sure there is a plan like this already set but either way, Ryan and Cumberland are the future of our forwardline and need time to get onto the field. The sooner the better.
Agree.
Balance is the key.
Hence why we need 2 smalls in the side.

I blame not only our own phys ed guys as it's across the board.
But practising for goal is frowned upon these days over certain limits.

After that miskick Miller should work out his comfort zone and kick from that distance.

Do a Ben brown and have a huge run up.

The way Richmond play it could have been the winning score.

I think if Samson Ryan is any good he will find a way to force out Jack at somepoint throughout the season. Jack is down to having just the 1 role he can play & is almost exclusively providing scoring, or nothing at all. He is one of the few guys in the 2nds that has an obvious path into the senior team if he can perform at VFL level. The role of 2nd fwd/2nd ruck are both highly questionable. If he can be a solution to those issues then he should be able to force Jack out soon enough.

Meanwhile, guys like Clarke, Brown, Banks, , Ross, Ralph-Smith, Sonsie, Dow, Mansell - they all feel like they are competing for the same roles we have covered 3 times over by Short, Baker, Taranto, Hopper, Prestia, Graham, Pickett, D.Rioli, KMac, Dusty & Bolton. They represent our best depth, but all fill roles that rarely need filling.

Agree totally...on last night's performance JR8 did himself no favours to either the team or hisself!

Need to find a way to get this lad a game. Jack might have to start doing stints on the wing and high half forward I reckon. Be extremely dangerous as a marking option down the line.

He’ll get games, just hope he gets 3-4 game run, because while I hope Lynch plays all year I doubt it happens. And Jack definitely won’t play all year.

And a collection of quality plays :)

  • JR8 nice one handed mark
  • JR8 another nice one handed mark
  • Bolton huge flying mark over Nank & DeKoning
  • Another quality mark with solid hands from JR8
  • Pickett strong tackle on Cerra and pilfer ball from behind him and swift outlet handball to MRJ underneath Newman's attempted tackle & MRJ nice moves in traffic
  • Baker lovely trap of Cripps as he attempted to snap a goal to get HTB
  • Taranto very nice hard-ball-get and outlet to KMac - one of many plays he was strong and clean in
  • MRJ great hunting and closing speed on McKay and great tackle on him, unbelievably it wasn't called incorrect disposal.
  • Lynch quality contested mark 2on1
  • DRioli nice blind turn to get away from JMartin and kick down the line and nice diving mark by Dusty to beat Newman
  • Vlastuin very high quality 1on1 win against CCurnow
  • Miller good 1on1 defensive win against CCurnow
  • JGTI great chase-down and tackle for HTB on Saad
  • JGTI another great harassing HTB tackle on Owies

I can't see Jack being dropped this week. Moving OK competing OK. His first mark was way up the ground. Knowing Dimma no unforced changes. Jack Graham injured. Maybe he misses.

You hardly even need to formally practice it though, it's a basic skill that can be rehearsed anywhere on the ground. Miller would've had 10,000 kicks of the football in his life so far - it's not a new skill he should have to learn. And as a couple of posters stated just above, ignore the posts and kick to a spot over the fence.

Bring him in against the pies especially if it becomes a shoot out , it's critical we maximise our marking power up forward, with Howe
Out its a good time to bring him in and also double team their only ruckman
We need a edge somewhere becouse they are gonna be hard to beat.

Don't want 'fine' want excellence!
How about the basics. Kicking skills. Miller, Ross, Graham, Bolton, dusty all missing shots.
MRJ, Lynch and JR all played okay football.
Backline was good.
Midfield ok. Cripps was kept under control. Cotch was fine.
Graham, short and Pickett were good. Given recent injury.
Ross and Mansell' s spots will come under scrutiny. Ryan or Sonsie or??? for Mansell.
Could we do better there?
Bolton has been an average shot for goal plus ongoing 50m penalties cost us games last year and he does exactly the same thing this year. (Prestia gave the ump a mouthful. Fine. A bad decision. And it's a rarity. Bolton hasn't known who to give the ball to for years. I recall many similar 50s.
The 50 didn't cost us last night but

As a team we didn't look that dominant even with our clearances, our major problem rectified.

Professional footballers know the basics!
Lets move on from the 'same old' 'same old' and get Sampson in!

It's like golf.Looks easy on TV.Unless you practice you'll never get better at it.
All players should spend 15mins each training session too brush up on a solid routine.
But no they're not allowed too due too overload.

We won't alter our set-up too much.Ryan would only replace a tall.

Miller is hardly the first key defender to go to water in front of goal

Plus both his kick and Ross’s were from a relatively hard position

I don’t think the basics are the problem it’s dealing with the pressure. Rugby players seem to have a better percentage when taking set shot at goal More practice with someone standing on the mark might help

Really? I saw a preseason session up on the Gold coast a couple of years ago. Small Forwards had a huge 20 minute session goal kicking from the boundary at the end.
If Miller wasn't allowed to do it at the club he should be doing it in the local park.
Every game has a 5 th quarter. On the ground practice before the game.
Lots of goal kicking there too.
No excuse. Even a point would have been handy.
