If you struggle to hold a mark with his size questions need to be asked with great concerns. A Brissy poster came on here and stated he has dinner plate hands and at junior level and it's still a concern with me.
The first thing I look for from a big fella is the one grab overhead mark ,,,bradke looks likely in that regard and that VFL kid Archie may has good hands as does Bauer . Ryan most impressive marks have oft been chest marks . I wish him the very best, he moves well and had a couple of really nice posies in middle of the ground , some nice handball and A very good footpass, I sincerely hope he can make the most of his chances

His biggest strength ATM is he gets into good position which means he can read the play, but his marking lets him down.

in two years he will be mint.

look at english now he has settled into his body, the baby giraffe is gone.

if he and we persist he will be a 1 in a 100 ruck that kicks goals.

needs time.

By your logic should I load up on Anthony Morabito and Matt Arnett for the Brownlow as both have similar traits to Dusty and Wines so must be cherry ripe to grow into their bodies? Someone else's career trajectory has zero to do with another's or we've got 100 Liam Baker's on this board ready to win most courageous? Through necessity he plays ruck. Keep him away from goals, bring in Bauer for KPF chance. Who knows if Ryan ends up a complete bust, a 60 game 3 club journey man or the next Max Gawn! Fact is all his team mates are now aware he can't mark for sh1t. If I was a mid and looked up and saw Samson 1 out or Dusty/ Bolton/ other 1 out I'd be kicking to Dusty/Bolton/ other 95% of time till Ryan can prove he can actually complete one of the basic fundamental skills we all learnt in Vickick- hold the fu@ken pill when it's kicked to you or play soccer.

Was the only one with eyes on the ball for that last contest, run across 15 m to get to it, did everything right just didn't execute the mark after playing 75 min of footy and it was wet... 5 games in... stick with him. His tap work is already a lot better than Nank's.

Get fitter and some more muscles and everything will fall into place.

Clarke's reaction time to get this ball directly off Rowbottom's boot from the tap-down. Then the composure to snap truly. Good signs

If anybody would like to see the rest of the GIF's from this match, they're from this post -> https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/richmond-gifs.1047662/post-78760379

I have low expectations for Ryan. But ecstatic that he is getting a chance. Some good work in the gifs.

I remember the Chol pinch hitter days and prefer what I am seeing from Ryan.

Just because Ryan didn’t kick 5 some posters are taking it as a personal insult he committed against them and needs to be punished. He wasnt great but he kicked one more goal than dusty, had more hitouts than miller, and our time of getting the ball away from clearances for the second week in a row coincided with him at the centre bounces, he did not drag his man to jack and have him doubled teamed, he is playing in front not from behind, showed he can handball to advantage. More is needed but the player ”we should have taken instead of brown“ van rooyen had one less possesion, one goal, and 10 less hitouts. Does that make VR a dud as well. We dont know. At this stage either may be star, journeyman, wasted pick. Just because ryan didnt perform to someone’s expectations after 4 games doesnt make him useless

Samson should start doing this

It’s not the only outside-the-square approach Lewis has adopted to help his game.
In a bid to improve his grip, Lewis keeps putty at hand to squeeze and strengthen his hands and forearms and, in turn, help his marking.
“Our hand therapist, Hamish Anderson, he loves getting a mention, he started to get a lot of the guys onto the putty just to strengthen your grip and all-round strength within your hands and your forearms,” Lewis said.
“It’s a marginal game, but marking is a pretty important part of my game, so anything that I can do to help it I will do it.”

Criticism of our rucks, both Ryan and Miller should be tempered, they are virtual beginners in their positions at AFL level. Sure they are not 18 year olds, but they are still 6 - 10 games into a ruck career. I would be very surprised if they don't get better week by week because they know they are not getting dropped (unless they have howlers), so can go into every game with a bit of confidence that they are not playing for their spot.

Ryan has plenty of footy nous, get's to the right spot, has good ruck craft, has good aggression but just lacks core strength. Once he gets that in another year or so he might be a player, certainly I think he has a much bigger upside than Soldo.

Miller is a half decent ruck, seems to tap it to good spots but he is undersized so is never going to out body rucks. But he has not rucked since a junior, so he is a bit unsure of himself at times. He needs to start to back himself and this weeks challenge might be just the thing. He will need to be pro-active either through playing a bit more of a ruck rover type role or he will need to stay very close to Gawn and Grundy and try and spoil/tackle every time they go near the ball. He has the athleticism to do this.

One thing that can go to our midfielders advantage this week is that we won't be backing ourselves to win the tap. They will be reading Melb's rucks only, so it should be a bit more 50-50 around the ball. The mids had to back Nank in to win his share of taps so had to play that way, not this week.

Huge gap between his best and worst. Other night was as ugly as it gets, but was marking them in the VFL and took 5 contested grabs in a quarter not long ago in the pre-season game

Just have to persist with him and hope they start sticking at this level. Getting him some grippo wouldn't hurt

Lynch out probably fast tracks his development even if it does cost us a few wins. I see Ryan as the long term Lynch replacement, he'll be a big, strong, contested marking big man that's really hard to stop in the air. At his height, will be able to ruck as well.

Needs those few extra kgs though and more upper body work in the gym. Once he has that bigger chest and shoulder frame like Lynch he will be incredibly tough to spoil.

He looks an almighty prospect. He just needs to get stronger and hopefully that will come over time.

in 2 years time when this kid actually learns the foward role and learns to use his height and frame
he will get stronger and have more campaigner in him

He is going to be a very hard unit to stop both foward and Ruck
