AFL Player #35: Matt Guelfi - Re-signs on a 2 year deal! Teenage girl fans rejoyce - 30/8

I've been of the opinion that Guelfi has been misused for a long time. I think his athleticism should provide him with a POD in an inside midfield role, rather than being thrown all over the ground. His main weakness is composure by foot yet we use him in an outside role every single week whilst we have the likes of Zach Merrett as one of our primary inside midfielders. I'd like to see a game where we gave him significant inside midfield time. We know how powerful he is in his lower body and seen how comfortable he is with the physicality. We're targeting someone like Mitch Wallis reportedly when the real solution is right in front of us.
A long time? He's played 10 games.

He's also listed at 79kg. He'd get killed on the inside surely.

Eh. Guelfi is Guelfi. Does some really intelligent things, second efforts are good, tackling and defensive pressure are good, disposal seems reasonable. Seems pretty consistent and is getting some good senior game time for a first year player (though I acknowledge he is older and more experienced than your typical first year so perhaps that's to be expected). It's easy to take him for granted, but presumably those traits are the reason we drafted him. I'd even call him vanilla.

If you can extrapolate from that sample size (and he's already ahead of J.Merrett?), he's not gonna be an AA or a superstar top five paid at the club or anything like that. But we should see him as a regular 10th to 25th type player over the next couple of years, in the mix with all the other good solid role-playing foot soldiers depending on form once you've picked your spine and your on-ball division. I would hope he is better than Howlett was if we expect the quality of the team to improve overall, but it's not a bad comparison as far as the type of role he would have in the team and the career he might have. Nice pick up for pick 76.

A good 10 game start, shows good balance, natural footballer. Jobe shanked a few in his first couple of years. Some of oob on full have been from him being pushed as he’s kicked or trying to kick from tight situations.

Better than I expected.

Matt Kommer wasn't that bad a player. He pretty much did the Baguley role up forward in 2013. He was fast and aggressive with his tackling but didn't kick many goals. He was still young and the expectation was that he would continue to develop. He then missed years with injuries and never made it back.

was stuffed for distance more than 35 out

Find it hard to believe he's being mentioned in the same sentence as Kommer.
baffling sometimes.

I never got onboard the Kommer train.

I am liking the Guelf. Seems to have a no nonsense hardness about him.
When he pushed Buckley over post-headbutt, i was pleased.

Dev and Guelf into the leadership group for 2019.

No, I'm utterly bemused by the love for Guelfi. That's not to say that I think he's trash or that he won't or can't make it.

He can find his way around the ground, big deal he's an AFL player I'd expect no less. His ball use is generally well below standard.

He looks like he could be a solid utility but I'd be surprised if he is in the top 30 on the list. I wonder when the honeymoon period for him on Big Footy will end.

Just going back to this one for a second!

Can agree with your sentiments about Guelfi, he doesn't do anything exciting or impressive stuff. He may not be as talented as some on our list but as (iirc) Zach Package said, sometimes we just need a meat and potatoes type of guy and he is exactly that. Ticks his box most weeks with the minimal of fuss and that is all we can ask for from a guy who is 20 picked late in the draft.

Do we want to upgrde him at our next chance? Absolutely! But right now he is doing the job to a suitable standard. When a Ridley (lock down small def/utility) is banging down the door at VFL level then he should be wary but right now there is no need to cry that the world is falling. He is getting the job done.

Well that's good for Matt Kommer, but what about the Nick Kommer who played at Essendon?

I echo what Beery said; hard to believe he's being brought up as even the slightest comparison to Guelfi.
