So he has pace, good endurance, good leap, accurate long kick, adds grit, can play any role including inside mid where he will block, tackle, run defensively and win clearances.

Gee, new draftees all sound like superstars, even at pick 76 in the 3rd chance saloon.

All the best Matt, look forward to seeing how you go.

The way I see it, it's the raw tools that make me think that's he's the sort of player who can become a useful 'role player' as opposed to the usual shit truck that can do 1 thing that is barely passable as a contribution in an AFL match.

With the running power and disposal Guelfi can be developed as an outside player to compliment his natural inside game. He could be developed into a run with player. He's just spent a season playing different roles in defence and attack.

'Role player' has become a condescending term that is used to justify the selection of shit players and/or cult heroes.

In days gone by there were specialists in positions but there are now fewer specialists because of the versatility required in the modern game. What is needed on lists is guys who can play three or four roles at AFL standard. They're not just role players, they're genuine utilities who compliment a side.

It's why I don't like the Bird and Howlett comparisons I've seen. Players with those limitations won't be on AFL lists too much longer because there isn't really anything for them to do on an AFL field. If there was we wouldnt have delisted them and retained Long and J. Merrett.

None of this means that I think Guelfi will make it by the way, I have no opinion on that until I've seen him play.

Has anyone seen him play this year/have 2017 vision? - seems like only his 2015 highlights are available EFC.com.au/AFL.com.au (based on publish date of afl.com)

There's 800 players on AFL lists. Those players will always find their way on to AFL lists. Just hopefully not ours

Mind if I add this to the OP? I made a little thing for his stats but not this comprehensive haha

The 15 touch average is slightly alarming
Played mostly off of a forward flank in the WAFL this season, although he's not a big accumulator to begin with. Averaged 16 disposals (9.5 contested), 4.5 clearances and 6 tackles in the Championships in 2016 as a full time mid albeit in shortened quarters. Since then he's also vastly improved his endurance. Guelfi's not the type of player that needs 30 touches to hurt the opposition, so it's not a massive problem for mine.

Without having seen him, the descriptions of him and his stats suggest a role player, and at his height with a nice kick and ability overhead he sounds like a nice BP project player who only needs to get a dozen touches a game. I could be way off the mark of course but why waste time on developing a bloke in the midfield if he can’t find the footy enough. Will be interesting to see where they play him pre-season.

Wasn't the knock on Zerrett pre draft that he didn't find enough of the ball? Or am I thinking of someone else.

Soft, didnt play a heap of TAC cup footy iirc. Very good cricketer growing up. Needed to tackle more at the time

for all the 'mature ager' talk, he's 4 days younger than Francis.

He's a just a kid, if we drafted him at 18 and he did what he's been doing in the WAFL for us I know I'd be wrapt with him.

If he were doing what he was doing on our list already, he would have been pushing senior selection this year already.

Still eligible for the rising star too eth-dog ;)

In U18 Div1 2016 he was:
-4th for tackles averaging 6/game (behind Pitman, Mutch & Scheer)
-5th for clearances averaging 4.5/game (behind Scharenberg, Clarke, Graham & Brodie)
-6th for inside50s averaging 3.75/game (behind Pitman, Bolton, Gallucci, Graham & Slimming)
-7th for contested possessions averaging 9.5/game (behind Clarke, Graham, Scharenberg, Brodie, Bunker, Pitman)
-17th for disposals averaging 16/game (similar to Perryman was 16th, Scheer 18th)
-41st for uncontested possessions averaging 7/game (but more than SPP, Venables, Bowes)

(Providing other players for some comparison - eg. just because you dominate clearances as Scharenberg did doesn't mean you will be able to make something of yourself at AFL etc)

That's the thing, you don't draft kids for what they can do as 18 year olds, you usually draft them for 100-150 games they play from 22-23.

So glad to see more players arriving to the AFL through different pathways over the last few years.

Better than the previous period.. where premierships could only be won in the window (and leaders of rebuilding teams talked like winning didn't matter) and the recruiting door was only open for 18 year olds.

The Bombers' bullish and successful trading strategy meant they didn't enter the draft until pick 49, where they nabbed Sturt product Jordan Houlahan. Houlahan, who projects as a high half-forward, has had some minor niggles throughout pre-season and remains quite light. The injury story is much the same for rookie midfielder Trent Mynott, who is focusing on his stoppage craft. Essendon's last selection in the national draft, Claremont's Matt Guelfi, is already paying dividends. The 20-year-old has senior WAFL experience, has not looked out of place in match simulation and seems the most likely to perform a role in the AFL side in 2018. Brandon Zerk-Thatcher, another from Sturt, has impressed with his closing speed and competitiveness, but, like Houlahan, needs to work on his body size. Category B rookie Luke Lavender, a former cricketer, fits in athletically and has pleasantly surprised with his kicking skills for someone with a limited football background.

The standout: Matt Guelfi - the No.76 pick is older than fellow draftees, has already played against men, and is showing an appetite for feedback and to improve.Marc McGowan

I'm very impressed, sounds like he is fitting in nicely!
