AFL Player #35: Matt Guelfi - Re-signs on a 2 year deal! Teenage girl fans rejoyce - 30/8

That’s interesting re Langford - feeds further into the thought that as an inside 50, mid sized forward he is just about the complete player now.

Smothers should be a stat on its own though.

Langford has played a bit behind the footy which probably artificially beefs that number, but having said that Darcy Byrne-Jones is first on the list and I don’t think he’s played exclusively forward either.

Guelf is really underrated. He brings that same Baguley type desperado attitude we all loved but he can take an overhead mark, has 55 metre kicking penetration and is pretty quick without being absolute lightening.

Trigger warning on mentioning Baguley please! The traumatic memories of watching him get turned around and burnt into goals for the oppo time after time. At least they finally came to their senses and hid him in the fwd line for the last couple of years of his career

If Guelfi were built like Langford* he'd dead set put people in hospital every week, and legally at that.

For such a slight player, relatively speaking, he cracks in harder than anyone on our list. Seriously tough footballer who seemingly has zero regard for his own welfare but somehow doesn't do damage to himself in the process.

*not a knock on Langford who's definitely not soft, just using it as a size comparison

And wants to be a model when he grows up... which is not viable if he breaks his face

Thought Baguley was pretty handy overhead for his size. Guelfi obviously has the advantage being taller with a better leap.

Pressure is still good but his attacking stuff has gone off a cliff. His overhead marking and marking on the lead as a small was really important last year but has essentially vanished. Not good.

Teetering on being dropped for mine. Runnng around like a chook with his cut off past month & 2 goals in that period just isn’t a good enough return. 7 disp & 0 goals against wet coast speaks to his struggles.

Suspect he’ll keep his spot but he’d want to lift against north.

Couple of marks overhead, couple of marks on the lead, lots of smothers.

Basically went back to everything that bought him success last year.

Maybe he needs the constant threat of being the last one picked to have that desperation.

Haven’t noticed him for three weeks until the second half today. Did a couple of good team things. Need more of that and less kick chasing…
He actually spends more time chasing opposition defenders than chasing kicks. Too bad a few of our other forwards do not do the same. Then he may be able to chase a few kicks and maybe give us more offence.

His biggest asset imho is his ability to mark overhead. As ant555 has banged on about for some time, we need guys willing to throw themselves in when they probably shouldnt. The elf is one who does. His ability to pressure and harass adds more credits to his selection in the senior side imho.

You just leave him alone, he has so much on his plate at the moment probably homeless as we speak, seeing as that red headed Flip impersonator is selling his place of abode from under his feet.

No - No you can't kick me out.

Aaron Francis: AFL player decides to punt St Kilda West home

Swans swingman Aaron Francis is booting the St Kilda West pad he shared with Essendon star Matt Guelfi.

Francis lived at 55 Park St with Essendon young gun Guelfi and enjoyed barbecues in the back yard with teammates such as currently injured ruckman Sam Draper, who “came over a lot”.

Where’s his footy at? Has some attributes - tackling, pressure etc - that when he’s on, are valuable but to me, he fits into that group of “Is he a good enough small forward in a premiership side?”

Only 1 goal in the last 3 games (GWS not included) isn’t great & 14 in 12 games definitely leaves room for improvement too.

Is he depth? Is he best 22? Is he someone that could be subject to being cut under a ruthless list cull?

Shit no he's not good enough in a premiership side.

He's not a good pressure player because he's too slow.

The issue is we have had to play him and Snelling because the top end players do not play with the same competitive edge and they have had no one coming through that is better and plays with that edge. Improve the contested footy at the top end of town and you will get a natural progression at the bottom end of town.

He should be the guy who's a leader in the seconds, sets the tone at training with non-stop hard work, and only gets a call up to the seniors when everyone is out with gastro or the coach needs to send a message
