he wouldnt be on much, but as he is out of contract this year then a trade is always possible, as is the possibility that he will get more elsewhere. if he was to go to melbourne, what are the chances of somehow getting one of their top 5 picks off them in return??

I would say the chances are slim- but offering him double what we are giving him must mean they rate him pretty highly..

How about Lamb for Watt..? Not sure how keen Laidley is on giving up Watt, or getting Lamb, but we need a FB.. and if Watt goes to Melbourne, then we don't really have an option.. Lamb done ok while Nicholson was out last year. (seemed to anyway)

i would hope that he could repay some loyalty....it's what been 5 years on our list we've persisted with him?

saying that if he wants out, get lamb he seems to be pretty good, right size, same age......but not just lamb as he's been playing reserves all year, we would want a draft pick with it

Yeah.. and Laidley has especially shown faith in him.

A Draft Pick.. of course:D:D

sorry to be pedantic, but hes been here for 6 years and some loyalty wouldnt go astray.

as for a trade, how about lamb + pick 5 for watt + pick 9? they get a better defender whilst we get a higher draft pick. sounds fair to me...

Sounds reasonable.. definetely like the sound of that #5 draft pick :)D), not sure if Watt is a better defender - haven't seen enough of Lamb to judge.. does sound a nice deal..

Then we get Guerra for Smith & Late Pick (Hopefully.. maybe not that exact trade)

And if Rawlings decides he wants to head to Arden St.. well we try and work out a deal.. and if it happens it happens, if it doesn't it doesn't.

ok watt played every minute of every game this year, lamb played zero minutes this year...you still wondering who the better defender is???:D

Yes.. Watt may have played every minute, but thats because Laidley likes him and was willing to show faith in him, Daniher seems to have a problem with Lamb and therefore didnt play him.

Or you could be right:D

Maybe Watt is trying to up his price. A pity given the faith that has been shown by Laidley and North as others have said. Not sure if it would be a great move for him.

If this is in deed true, there is only one course of action that North must take here - play hard ball.

Watt could potentially play for 10 years and would definitely be part of our future. You could even call him the biggest positive to come out of the season. However, his value in the open market would still be pretty low. Therefore, he is the type of player you DO NOT trade under any circumstances.

There are only two types of player that one should consider trading IMHO:

1) the ones who aren't part of your future plans (eg S Motlop, Morrell)
2) required players who want to leave the club, and once all avenues of trying to keep them are explored, would command good compensation in return. (eg Bell, Scwass).

Watt doesn't fall into either category. He is a required player, but would command little trade value. So if I was the CEO, I would offer him a payrise he deserves, but if that proved not enough, I'd tell him to go into the draft or sign up. Losing him altogether isn't much different to getting some Melbourne reject or a 3rd round draft pick.

For what it's worth, I am sure he will stay

Watt would be due for a pay rise anyway. Sure, he hasn't set the world on fire, but his new status as an established defender should see him get a better contract than the last one, where he was a struggling rookie.

I'd say the 'double' pay Melbourne are offering would mainly indicate that he is on the minimum wage at the moment.

All in all, I'd be very surprised to see hime move. Sure, he'd field offers, but only to establish his market value. Why would you leave a club on the up, where the coach is showing faith in you? Heading for 'greener' pastures is too much of a career risk...

Then why oh why have you been touting Lamb as a potential recruit if you haven't seen much (any?) of him???.

Well if we are getting rid of say.. Smith (who has done bugger all for us), for him- then I don't see why we shouldn't try and get Lamb, he may (or may not) turn out a better FB than Watt.. and as FB seems one of our weakest areas , would rather be trying as many avenues (cheap avenues) to find a permanent answer to FB then doing nothing about it. Apparently the bloke we got to play at FB isn't going to play at FB (Leigh Brown)

let me be the devils advocate here but if he is testing the waters to see what he can get elsewhere, let him go
22 full games desrves better repayment to the team than ****ing off elsewhere

The particular job i am involves sport, hence good rumours, this one is interesting.
I am told Shannon Watt has had a meeting with Melbourne Football Club, for a possible swap, dont know what player though, apparantly the demons have offered Watt double what he is on at Kangas! as the demons need defenders, they would be keen, which leads me to a queaston....if Melbourne can offer double, what on earth is he on at North??? and would North come to the party?

Watt the?
Let Melbourne have him. I'll take anything for him. Even Ezra Poyas.
There going to pay him double watt hes on now. WTF!
Honest he doen't deserve double watt hes on now. We have been loyal to him, Dean especially.
I honestly don't believe the story but if it held some truth then Shannon should have a good, long hard look at himself. Players on good salaries earn those salaries, and his perofrmances have yet to warrant any significant annual income.

I know I'm going to be out here on my own....but I really don't think we want to lose Shannon Watt. Having read this forum for quite a while, it seems to me a lot of people have a pre-formed opinion of Watt, (admittedly after 5 years of ordinary footy), that isn't going to change regardless of what he does in the future.

It's easy to dig up every mistake or bad quarter or half or whatever he had this year....but I've hardly ever seen anyone give him any credit for the good things he does....and he did plenty of good stuff this year.

I agree he doesn't warrant a huge pay increase, but his improvement has been pretty massive.Besides, double his current salary wouldn't be through the roof anyway I wouldn't think.

Anyway, this time last year we all had him being delisted. I would say that every fan on here would have him as our fullback next year, as things stand right now. If we can find someone better, so be it.....but I think it's pretty important we hold onto him. I believe he'll be a pretty good player for us, and does have some flexability.

As for Lamb, is he a wolf in sheeps clothing? seeing as how mongrel seems like such an importnat factor....or is he a real sheep that just follows behind his forward. I'm tipping the latter from his games tally.

Stick with Watt!!!

Its fair enough for Watt to get a pay rise. He did become a regular this year. I don't have too much of a problem with him doing some hard bargaining either. I just hope he does keep in mind the faith that has been shown in him (and there's nothing that suggests that he's not done that).

Watt is bloody lucky to be still playing AFL football.
Some people like him and some people don't but lets look at the facts here. He's been with us now for 6 years and has only now become a regular and that was only because Dean laidley had no other fullback and wanted to give Watt a chance. He has had his chance now and hopefully should improve next year but if he now heads off to Melbourne then he is pretty lousy.
I can't see it happening. He will get a payrise of course because why would you have a new contract for less money???? He is now a senior player so of course he warrants a higher salary.

I don't think it's unreasonable that Watt would be getting an increase in pay this year, but if he walks out after the years of development and opportunities this season, then he can go **** himself. He may be a senior player, but he's no gun, not yet anyway.

I think next season is a crunch season for Watt. It will be his seventh year at the club, and second as number one FB. He was ok this year, but if he was dragged in certain games this year, we probably would've made the night GF and the finals. FB is a hard position to fill, so I wouldn't rush in getting rid of him.

yeah the problem with these things is only the people who want to participate actually do...i dont think wells was interested and may have gone home to WA over the off-season anyway. i would love to see aaron davey carve 'em up next year though!!

You never know.
Watt was the fastest over 100 meters in the club last summer. To be very quick over 100 you need to be very strong and most sprinters do not mature til 27 and later. Wells would definitely beat Watt over 5, maybe 30 meters but does not have body strength to go on.
Harvey represented North last year and was right up there for the first half but finished poorly.

Agree D - Man.

I would pick Watt over 100m at North. Wells would munch him over 40, a few would, but strength counts.
