Off the topic slightly, but i had a beer with Shannon Watt on Monday night. He and Stuey Cooper were at a venue that my band is resident band at, as were a stack of Bombers including Solomon, J.Johnson, Welsh and a few fringe/young blokes, who were all hangin together with Watt (Cooper left pretty early).

Great fella was Watty. Very genuine. Said he was really thankful of the opportunity Dean gave him but realised the coming season was the clincher.

Anyway, i found it noteworthy that all the Essendon blokes were indulging in the gaspers and getting well rat-arsed, and in the time i was chatting, he would have knocked back 3 or 4 offers of a ciggy himself (mainly from Solomon, who was also a gun bloke)

Was impressed with Shannon's discipline.

Good on Shannon- did he say anything of interest?
He was more interested in talking about my band than talking footy to be honest.

I mainly asked him about Laidley's approach to him and his relationship with the coach as a result of the faith he has shown. He said that Denis was a good coach as well and that he didn't blame him all that much for the limited opportunity considering the players who we've had on our list.

But not suprisingly did say that Laidley has been terrific for him and that they get along great, but he was also very honest with him in terms of what he needs to do to improve. I asked him what that was and he said his body strenght and intensity, but he also wanted him to back himself alot more to get the ball and set up play up the field.

wells is on holiday at the moment and watt is suppossed to be one of the fastest players at the club so why not let him represent the club.

Found this on afl.com.au
"Fremantle’s James Walker blitzed his opposition, after two heats saw him pitted against 2002 victor Sydney’s Jared Crouch, Geelong’s David Wojcinski, Essendon’s Damian Cupido and Melbourne’s Luke Williams."
So don't think he did very well.

I rated Watts game on Saturday he was quick off the mark, played close to Neitz and looked composed. Along with Hale they were the shining lights.

We need to improve at the centre bounce if we are going to challenge any one for the eight. I would like to see us blood some of the young kids such as Jones or Mcintosh. As we appear to be lacking a real mobile marking option up foward.

I thought at the beginning of he year we had one of the most impressive onball divisions. Lets hope we pick up in that area before the real season begins

I cannot believe that some people are bagging the coach after one wizard home game.

Agree with you on Watt's game, restricted Neitz to approx. three shots on goal resulting in three behinds, and pushed his leads wide by playing close and in front. Early on in the match Porter provided great defensive presence dropping back after the centre bounce and allowing Leigh Brown to take the ruck knocks around the ground; good move.

I felt once Hale came on, and Porter off Hale was pushed forward and Porter's presence in the defensive fifty was sorely missed and it opened the Melbourne forward line for running midfielders and leading forwards to take marks.

As Leigh Brown did last yeah and Porter very early, I would like to see a player take the role of dropping back defensivly from the midfield and fill the gaps in the defensive fifty, allowing Leigh Brown or even Saverio Rocca following the ball in the midfield/forward line and taking ruck contests.

Agree don't blame Laidley for the loss, our midfield was simply not accountable, and we used the football atrociously.

100% of the blame should go to the midfield IMO. They didn't get the ball out of the middle enough, they were not accountable (would be nice if someone could've followed Cameron Bruce around), and when they actually had the ball - they couldn't hit their targets.

The forwards did OK considering the pathetic delivery they were getting, and the defenders were outstanding considering the quality and regularity of ball coming into our defensive 50.

good on watts, a lot of sainters were hoping we got him, he seems a quality player and a quality bloke (not a big head **** like some of the kids going around)

Still Raphael will be a great player, but Watts will be a gun in all likelyhood.
Pity we couldn't get them both!:D

some scouts actually rated watts much higher than he actually went so it seems you guys got a great deal.

Oh mate, you're a ********. We are talking about Shannon Watt, Fergus Watts is playing for Adelaide. Lay off the shroomz buddy! ;)

I thought he was exceptional. Definately didn't get enough credit. If he can string a season of these sort of performances together with regularity meanwhile exposing his attacking flair for all to see he will be shoving it well up Pagan's ass. Then again, our old coach seems to have done very well with the limited resources to get his team functioning again. Let's see whether they can do in in H&A games...but nice to see anyways

I thought one of the best features was that one on one he often out pointed Neitz - or at least neutralised him.

The three kicks he did get he was miles out on the lead.

Even though this is not really good the following points are in his favour.

A) I think all three shots were pretty close to the boundary - may have been an easy mark but he still missed them because the angle was pretty tough

B) He actually outmarked Neitz in the 1st quarter after Neitz tried to shove him under the flight of the ball. This is very different from what we saw last year.

All in all I thought that his performance was pretty promising - especially because we were spanked black and blue (perhaps red and blue ?) in the middle and Watt still forced him wide

Your've just won the World Championship for the most stupid comment I've ever seen on BF

I really liked Watt's game. I am happy with his progress. Porter and Colbert did well early on to help plug some holes and then Neitz went very wide which was good.

How often is Neitz restricted to no goals when the demon's midfield is clearly on top? Very few times I would imagine.

I think Hale switched with Rocca when he went forward so I dont think both Rocca and Hale were on the ground at any one time in the forward line. Would have been a waste since our midfielders dont kick it to them.

I also like Hale's progress from what I saw. There were a few positives, alot of negatives unfortunately.

Don't listen to them Dan Warna, I still haven't stopped laughing, you're welcome here anytime.

Well i believe that this will be critical
battle of the following matches!!!

Should be a good test to whether Watt HAS
come thru as a player or not!!!!

Todat -Fevola-for starters

He got towled early last year
but got revenge round 22
Mind you i could have played on him that day!!!
{the ball was sailing thru post high at the other end}

Also want to see the same system thru the back 6
IMO Sansbury has made a huge difference with abit of run!!!

The real tests are coming the Saints
Nick-the untouchable-Baird Again
Gehrig-Watt Again???
Hamill-Arch or Colby

Swans-B.Hall-WATT Again!!!!
