Neser has to play, Maxwell for Murphy.

Green Ussie Lab Smith Head Marsh Carey Maxy Neser Cummins Starc

Plenty of bowling to take enough wickets and bat down to 10 and 11.

That’s a side that wins or retains the ashes for mine next test.

No if or buts Neser has to play in next Test George Bailey as the Bulls quick is probably in career best form with the ball, just love the energy he brings with his bowling, plus has just smashed a county 176*, no mean feat even for a specialist bat. I say go in with a four pronged main attack, with Green to bowl if needed and let him concentrate on batting as we need biggies from our three best time bats, Smith, Marnus and the big fellar. We need to bat and bat and grind them into the Old Trafford turf.

Marsh
Cummins
Neser
Starc
Hazlewood

A powerful attack and plenty of late order firepower with the bat.

That would be a bold selection (and I like it) but:
--- it would make the selectors look like mugs for having Renshaw and Harris in the squad to begin with.
--- it would make the selectors look like panic-merchants to make so many changes after the loss.
Neither of the above would appeal to their egos.
--- McDonald has said often they like to have a spinner. That's fine if the spinner is Lyon. Cummins clearly has no confidence in Murphy and threw him under the Stokes bus in the first dig @ Headingley. Murphy's reselection would surprise and disappoint me. Variety for variety's sake is pointless.
--- My guess is that they do not want to open with Green, whose 84 runs (avge. 21) and 3 wickets (for 173 runs total) are underwhelming. You never know --- it would be a pleasant, adventurous surprise if they did open with Green. To me, there's something about Green at this stage that says "NOT READY".

If the wicket is a green-top I'd prefer Hazlewood to Maxwell (better chance to take 20 wickets and still bat down to 10).

I like Neser but we need to remember he’s playing county 2s.

He’s taken 19 wickets at 25.63 and a SR of 45.63 and that’s including a 7fa.

For comparison Robinson in the same comp has taken 20 at 13.65 and 29.30 in two less matches.

The extra batting would be nice but he is a class below Hazlewood, and I think we need a spinner.

Neser is several classes below Hazlewood.
Hazlewood is a world class international frontline bowler.
Neser is a very good first class cricketer.

Isnt the easiest change just to drop Murphy (Head bowling his spin when needed...which will be often) and retain Marsh, with Green coming in? Personally would LOVE Warner to get dropped, as we are basically playing a man down, but as a batsman there is like zero chance. With this approach you are basically batting till 8..

Warner
Ussi
Laub
Smith
Head
Carey
Marsh
Green
Starc
Cummins
Hazelwood

That’s the side I would like, except Marsh 6, Green 7, Carey 8.

Declaration is in. Neser finished on 176* from 202 balls, 25 fours, 2 sixes, and a strike rate of 87.12.
Looked like club bowling. Swepson with a previous best FC score of 37 also smacked 69 off 70

He goes alright in Australia too just quietly. Whatever you think of the standard of the competition, he can only perform in it - and perform he has done and is still doing.

First-class bowling in Aust over the past 6 seasons:
22/23 - 47 wickets @ 17.31
21/22 - 18 wickets @ 19.11
20/21 - 22 wickets @ 24.27
19/20 - 37 wickets @ 20.18
18/19 - 33 wickets @ 23.03
17/18 - 39 wickets @ 21.84

Club bowling that had Glamorgan 7-93. It can't have been too foul.

The three games so far have been ultimately decided by the tail wagging and I see that continuing. England will play Woakes for the rest of the series.

We really do leave a lot of runs on the table if we go with Starc Murphy Boland or Hazelwood. Only got confidence in Cummins or Neser producing anything remotely worthwhile at the tail.

Everyone says we need a spinner but clearly they won’t back Murphy in otherwise he would have bowled more last game.

With the way England play and if it’s not going to be a dust bowl there would be more use in playing the extra quick and having Head bowl any spin needed or the X Factor of playing the extra batsman / gun fielder in Maxwell go can bowl spin.

There has to be more to Maxy playing county cricket considering CA just pulled him and Marsh from playing the hundred comp.

I like Neser, but I'd be surprised if he performed any better than Boland with the ball.

There's been plenty of players over the years with good FC bowling records who haven't gotten a big look in, including Boland, Sayers, Neser and if we go back a little, Joe Mennie.

There's usually a reason these guys haven't been selected that is evident when they play in Tests. Boland was somewhat of an exception but his limitations were on show this series and he's unlikely to play again.

While the selectors have made questionable batting decisions over the years, they've usually been pretty spot on around which pace bowlers to invest in and select looking beyond someone's Cricinfo record which is usually the case for people online.

The idea of stacking our side with players who are good but not great in both disciplines is something we used to mock England for. Selecting Maxwell is no different than England selecting Moeen and yet he's now being floated as an option. Neser would be in a similar vein, hasn't actually done anything outstanding with the ball and given he'll be batting at 8, I'm not sure what advantage that gives us over Starc/Cummins who're already producing with the bat for us.
