He would have most likely been best on ground had he nailed the behinds he missed.

An improvement on last few weeks.

He’s challenge is not accuracy but passion. Going only at 65% atm. Not good enough for a champion who can still destroy opposition teams if he applies that intent.

The injury was far more serious than people realise, he will never be the same player again so stop expecting him to be.

Dusty played a strong game tonight and was a couple of very narrow missed shots at goal from being in the BOG conversation. But this is the fine line he treads. In all the finals we needed him to, he was nailing those shots with often similar output in other areas like disposals and contested possessions, and thank god he did. He just missed those opportunities to put his name in lights tonight but there is plenty in his performance to give cause for optimism.

4th quarter was prime Dusty. It honestly looked like something clicked where he said to himself "**** this, I'm going to try win the game myself". He stiff armed about 10 different players and tried to kick every goal.

Usually he's very unselfish almost to the detriment of the team when he can take hard shots and nail them more so than anyone else in the team. Shame we only see bursts of this nowadays

a bit annoying how one of the coaches gave him 4 votes (Hibbard)
Dusty was very good as was Hibbard but they really just cancelled themselves out of calculations because Hibberd wore Dusty like a glove most of the game and was a lucky boy that Dusty's radar was a little bit off.

Was Old Mother Hibberd on Dusty all game or did he move to Cumberland after the latter looked like tearing them a new one early doors?

He went to Cumberland after Qtr time

Which explains Hardwick's frustration at Cumberland, who has been seriously taken apart by Hibberd over the last 3 terms.

Another interesting one in the coach votes was Viney, who clearly got BOG 5 from one club and 5th best 1 vote from the other. Great fillip for Taranto to get the 9 and to some extent Hopper and Prestia for keeping the gun Dees mids to a sensible level of influence.

Viney enjoyed the Tiges kicking it to him throughout the match. We statted him up a bit. Who gets votes for that?

I'm still seeing a lot of comments like "Yeah this guy's good but he has a long way to go to be as good as Dusty", then the typical references to Dusty being 3x Norm Smith which has never been done, etc

The most recent is seeing comments on how good Nick Daicos is, but that he has a long way to go to reach Dusty...

They just flat out should not be compared. More than a decade separates them in age and, if we're being brutally honest, 2017 (age 26) was the first season Dusty really broke out and started to dominate not only massively, but consistently. Prior to that he was very good and very dangerous, but not always (despite barely ever missing a game).

It helps that Daicos is already playing in one of the better sides for his 30 games, whereas Dusty only played in a really good team from 2017 onward, but they are just tracking very differently. At the same age, Daicos is definitely ahead, he's an out and out star, but they're also different players.

It doesn't matter if he never wins a flag, a brownlow (can't imagine he won't, it will probably be this year...), or a norm, the fact is he's a gun, and we should just accept that.

In other words, time to move on a bit from what we remember of Dusty. It's only 6 years but that's a long time in footy. He's past his best a bit now, he might regain a little bit of it in the coming weeks (he is showing some signs), but he won't reach near 2017/18 levels again and the team likely won't for some time either, and that's fine.

Just not true mate.

2016 - 23 Brownlow votes, including SIX BOG's.
2015 - 21 Brownlow votes, got votes in TEN matches
2014 - 13 Brownlow votes, got votes in EIGHT matches, multiple goals in SEVEN matches
2013 - 16 Brownlow votes, got votes in EIGHT matches, multiple goals in FIVE matches, BOG THREE times
2012 - multiple goals in SEVEN matches

Every season he averaged over 20 possession, up to 30-ish in two of those seasons.

That's incredible consistency from a young bloke in the first half of his career, and why he was offered $1.5M/year elsewhere even before his heroics of 2017.

Don't get me wrong, Dusty has always been a gun. But 2017 compared to before that, huge difference. Turned into an absolute bonafide superstar.

Daicos is ahead of him at the same age though. Maybe not by as much as I'm making out.

Different players though. Dusty, at his best, broke games apart single-handedly, either dominating them all over, or taking them by the scruff of the neck at key moments and being the reason things changed (eg. 2020 GF).

Daicos MAY have already reached a ceiling. Still a very good ceiling, but may never be at Dusty levels of standing head and shoulders above everyone else on the field (which I don't think Daicos is doing yet despite how good he's been, and may never).

But either way, we shouldn't say "yes but will he be as good as Dusty" to every new gun player from other teams.

I honestly think Dusty's speed, agility and ball handling is right back where it was during the 2020 finals series and if we take the entire last three seasons, he's been looking this good for about 5% of that time.

He'll tear a game apart some week very soon once he's blown out the rust, mark it down.

nope around 2015-16 he became an A grade player of the comp

2017 he became elite level GOAT

you are confused because that 2017 season is something that you will probably never see from an individual again, but its not possible to reach those standards year after year consistently
