It was my hobby horse at the time and I know I've whined about it for years on here. Was terrible at so many levels.

Amongst other bits and pieces it cost:

Cam Mooney (who didn't want to go)
Scott Welsh (we on-traded the return for him)
Draft pick that became Enright
Draft pick that became Giansiracusa

For a guy who was never that good in the first place.
A young Cam Mooney would’ve been damn handy 18m later.

Strangely I remember Wayne Carey speaking at the 1996 family day, joking about how we've recruited all these talented 6'4" kids and it was keeping the older key possie guys on their toes.

Frustrating that we hocked off the best of that young lot. Mooney absolutely didn't want to leave at the time (why would he? his 0 possie thing aside he'd just won a flag with these guys) and Miller had to talk him into it.

Here’s a mental exercise, wouldve Cam Mooney been a better player if he stayed at North?

It's a bit like asking yourself, would Nostrils be a better poster if he left us for the Geelong board?..

He was projecting as a very good young player already. Had some competitive games up forward and also played back on David Schwarz and did ok despite giving up a lot of size at that time. Denis didn't just hand games to young blokes for the heck of it.

I think he would've developed into an excellent player for us.

I know the draft was seen as a massive risk back then, but in another timeline, Mooney stays as a ready made 6’6 forward, we realise how important the draft was about to become, and stock up on scouts and picks.

Side note, what ever happened to Kris Shore? Was he the other one with Wells.

Really nice lad but just didn't have a point of difference for AFL. Decent mark at VFL level.

In both 2000 and 2002 we brokered strong trade/draft positions out of losing Bell, Carey, Pickett but unfortunately didn't nail the picks.

We still had two firsts in that draft and used them on Buddy Hales and Ash Watson
Geez it makes for some terrible reading, out of all of those early draft picks, we essentially got Wells, Hale and Machintosh.
I would’ve loved to be a fly on the wall during those meetings, it seemed like we missed the trend for midfielders.

tbf for all the hype around that draft and the amount of champions it produced, half of the top ten was comprised of some pretty ordinary players (Polak, Xavier Clarke, Luke Molan, Sam Powers and Ash Sampi).

Footy can be really confusing sometimes when so much of your team is abject garbage that so much as getting a sniff at selection is impossible for guys like him. Like can he really be that bad compared to what we're dishing up

I choose to believe that they are giving Lachie Young 3-4 games to show something to save his career, then Kallan will get the same chance (last 3-4 games).

It's highly likely that this belief is ridiculously wrong.

As someone out of the loop, can anyone explain what is so diabolically wrong with him right now that he can't get a game in this side?
It's a mystery. He is a good kick and mark and is mobile. He could take the place of many regular players

it’s over. With our pathetic form and lengthy injury list, the fact he’s nowhere near it is a bad sign.
Everyone else whose fit has actually gotten a game this year except him.
Well him and Edwards. That isn’t good company to be keeping.

It’s sad that he will gone at seasons end there’s a good chance that Rawlings will survive and keep his job.
