It is a fair question. After the rd 2 match where Bauer got some goals and appeared to play alright, Steve Morris said they wanted to see more work rate to get closer to the ball more often. I presume he was 60-70m from the kicker at times when they'd have preferred to see him 40-50m from the kicker. it is pretty obvious they don't see that method of play working for Bauer at AFL level. So I guess they want to try something different with him to see if it makes some pennies drop or maybe even discover a new potential role for him. Not 100% sure but maybe they also thought he was cutting Bradtke's lunch a bit?

I think at 192cm and approaching 21 years of age, Bauer is going to need to develop a proper tank pretty smartly or he might be on shaky ground. He was injured during the pre-season though so he might have a bit of upside to come later in the season as he gathers fitness. I saw bits of the match last night and he did a couple of nice things in defence, but I wasn't watching closely enough to tell if he was doing much wrong as well.

To be fair to Bauer, missed some time at the back end of preseason with his foot injury which may be why his tank isn’t where you’d like.

I assume that as you say, he’s being played down back as a learning opportunity for reading the ball in flight better which he struggled against Coburg. Also not a bad thing considering our depleted KPD stocks currently.

Will be interesting now with Lynch out for a while, if they continue to rest Riewoldt and if so, whether Bauer comes in for him.

He was awful up forward, kicking a few easy goals was hiding the fact he had no idea how to read the ball and consistently get to contest.

Best chance of making it is a defender in a similar manner to Josh Battle.

Strange that !

How did he suddenly lose that ability when he was showing it in spades in the SANFL ?
after all thats why we drafted him didnt we ?

Would you like to see the highlights from his sanfl time ?

Bauer has a lot of natural forward ability. Is also a great kick at goal.

Do not understand the move to playing back but at the end of the day he’s 21 years old and getting him time as a potential swing man isn’t the worst idea.

I’ll throw this one out there in the universe though.

Are we looking to develop Bauer as a back with the idea of when Gibcus returns he is also a swing man.

Can you play two 190+cm back/fwd swingman in the senior team?

i think he played six games as a forward in SANFL before we drafted him. I think that is a pretty small sample to determine or predict how good of a forward he was or could become. Played his best footy as a defender.

Clearly it was as we drafted him as a foward based on his foward craft

I reckon he comes in , good idea schooling him in defence , he’s got a bit more of the ball too which won’t do him any harm, not been 12m in the system he’s tracking well , would like to see him play deep near jack at pointy end takes a really good one grab mark

Another big step forward on the weekend.

Morris comments
Takes the game on, plays with no fear.
Brings some chaos (in a good way) to the backline
layed ruck in the 4Q
Few little things that need to be tweaked

Interestingly El-Nour mentioned in relation to draft prospects.
One to watch with the mid season draft
I think mutaz would be on our shortlist , looks an athletic type , finds plenty of the ball , Q is how much upside if he becomes a FT footballer .

Our aerial ability anywhere in the ground is poor ,,,that’s the sanitised version , get him in the bloody side

Cometh the man, cometh the hour! Through necessity this bloke MUST be thrown to the wolves as our KPF against the Dee's. Even better that he knows how to defend cos maybe he can stop their defenders intercepting everything and give our crumbers a sniff. Ryan to ruck.
This is being overlooked way too much for mine. In the last 2 games Ryan's ruckwork has been elite. Miller was putrid.
Ryan 1st ruck
Miller 2nd ruck
Bauer forward

Did Bauer play down back all game?

If so, how amateur is the AFL media team when this is the update:

Hit by injuries, Richmond fielded just four AFL-listed players in its nine-point loss to Carlton on Friday night.

Thomson Dow worked hard and had 20 disposals, four clearances and three tackles.

Sam Banks had 19 touches and seven marks while kicking two behinds, while Jacob Bauer had 13 disposals but was goalless.

Steely Green, taken with pick No.55 in last year's draft, had seven disposals and kicked a goal.

Played some ruck time in the 4Q but mostly down back
He/she hasn’t done their research

Absolutely thrilled this kid gets a crack. Steven May has 15kg's on him but May has the weakness of being a hot headed peanut.. I'm obviously not the coach but i'd be giving him the instruction of TAG Steven May and just spoil, have Bolton nearby for some crumbs. If he fails to get the job done switch him up with Tylar (King of the spoil, Golden Fist and certain Jazzie O favourite) Young as Tylar is only 4kg's lighter. I'd be sledging May about being a dumb drunken buffoon and all round sh1t bloke, anything that gets him mad and distracts him. Need some cohesion between our forwards this week and long kicks like Balta and Short MUST kick the opposite side of ground to their rucks and I reckon with a little luck and bounces go our way we're in with a sniff. Bauer can't be trying to dominate and kick a bag. He's up against the repeated All Australian gorilla, needs to nullify him is all.

We don't know whether he gets a crack at it yet. We will find out this afternoon. As our game is on Monday, we only announced an extended bench.

He will play. Riewoldts 4 goals were a phenomenal achievement aginst the Swans. He was however the beneficiary of a very dubious free and in that one on one contest he had that Danny Devito player in a chokehold that i'm baffled wasn't paid against him, so 2 goals were very lucky/ dubious. Riewoldt was never known for his strength, and sadly his spaghetti arms are getting flogged in the clutches against minnows lately. Lynch usually takes May. Riewoldt on May will never happen would be too painful to see. Coaches couldn't be that stupid. If Riewoldt lines up on May, I'll even report the club to AFL integrity dept. for tanking.

Made up for all the holding or blocking frees he didn’t get.

Let alone the holding or incorrect disposal frees we weren’t paid

Might whip out the jack of old and kick 10 on him like the old Gold Coast days
