I find this staggering!!

Trump conducts rallies all over the country in hundreds of different spots. It's next to impossible to close off or cover all possible fire lanes for a determined sniper, in hundreds of different locations.

A talented marksman can regularly make a shot from over a kilometer away. The record for a confirmed kill is over 2 miles in distance.

I guess it’s gonna be a risk wherever he goes now.. be interesting to see what changes from here on in..

Nah, the shooter was on top of the most obvious rooftop with clear line of sight to the podium.
This wasn't some guy from 2kms away in a conspicuous driven up van or something.
These guys are meant to be professionals at exactly this, massive failure to clear and secure the area.

I don't accept it was a failure (although Im happy to be proven wrong when the dust settles).

You're seriously underestimating the near impossibility of securing a target from a determined attacker, when that target is routinely making public appearances at crowded rallies in hundreds of different indoor and outdoor locations.

I've worked with the guys that do this job for our politicians overseas in war zones. I couldn't image having to do it in built up urban areas, changing weekly, and in a society that is polarized and where every man and his dog has an assault rifle.

No doubt could just be an unfortunate oversight and miss, however it wasn't a built up area (atleast going by the satellite pics), it seemed the most obvious.
The worry for me is the SS shouldn't be fallible to "unfortunate misses". These guys are meant to be the best of the best when it comes to personal security, even allow the photo op seems to me a massive risk and failure, just assuming a solo shooter.
It could simply come down to the old saying how bad guys have to get lucky only the once, whereas the good guys have to always be lucky (not saying trump is a good guy either... but the SS should always be "good guys") and maybe it was just this one time today.

You would think the Secret Service would have drones in the air looking for potential shooters like this guy.

It wasn't clear from the video but it looked like they waited for him to start shooting before they took him out. I suppose it's not like the movies. If you have practised it 100 times you might still hesitate before pulling the trigger if you are not sure what you are seeing and knowing you will be killing someone.
