Does it mean he's a member of the Party or do you register to vote and nominate your preference?

Being registered is generally how you select which party's primary you get to vote in.

In Pennsylvania it's a checkbox on the voter registration form.

Not sure of the specifics of Pennsylvania but depending on the state of residence, when you register to vote there is a question where you can nominate your political party affiliation on your voter registration card.

Generally speaking you do not have to vote for the party you are registered with in a federal, state, or local general election BUT (depending on the state) you may only be allowed to vote for the political party you are registered with for

• A presidential primary or caucus
• Congressional or local office primaries

And you can of course, change your party affiliation down the track.

Being a registered voter with affiliation to one party says nothing of just how committed or active you are to that party of course.

According to the voter record published he registered basically as soon as he was 18 (born Sept 2003, registered Sept 2021) and most recently voted in 2022 - presumably state or some such?

The information we see in the first few days after a major incident like this is often inaccurate.

But even if it's proven that Thomas Matthew Crooks is the gunman it might not be significant that he's a registered Republican. He would have been too young to vote in 2020, and when he turned 18 his parents might have registered him with their affiliation. As you say you don't have to vote for the party you are registered with.

It's likely that someone who climbs on a roof to assassinate a Presidential candidate has some history of violence, or radicalism on social media. It should become clearer in the next few days.
