Everyone supported Bernie apparently which seems odd when we've ended up with Trump as President. If you believe Rogan there's a bunch of bridges out there with your name on them.

I mean, your point about Rogan is valid as a lot of the stuff on his podcast should not be believed without checking for yourself but it's kind of hard for Bernie to be elected if there wasn't a primary in the first place.

I think that's why a lot of people think Bernie got screwed. He was super popular but never got the chance. I still think if Bernie ran against Trump in 2016 he would have absolutely murdered him.

You think America has gone from wanting a democratic socialist to electing Trump inside a decade? That sounds to me like victim blaming.

Not sure I follow which victim is getting blamed? Don't think I'm putting blame on anyone at all.

I'm just saying Bernie got screwed and would have been a good president in 2016, I firmly believe he would have beaten Trump, as for why people voted the way they did in 2024, not sure I can answer that. There is clearly a noticeable right-wing shift in many countries at the moment.

I do think the democrats not running a primary had some impact.

Here's a question for people, how many people in your life that you converse with happens to like Trump?

I have found in mine the vast majority that openly profess any positivity or favourability toward him are those in my gym when casual chat inevitably turns to American politics. It's probably not a suprise with how bro-y these places can get, but it's always interesting and weird to come across Australians so passionate about him.
It's because he sounds different and not like a politician.

People are sort of fed up with politicians

I’m in my 60’s, been a musician most of my life and been quite shocked to discover some of my contemporaries are Trump supporting.
Turns out they’re into the tinfoil hat Covid stuff and believe all the Gates, Soros, WHO, UN, Big Brother stuff.
When I bring up the trashing the environment, removing health care, letting big pharma charge what they want they don’t know what I’m talking about. They don’t read the fine print, just think Trump will save them from 5G microchips & jail Fauci.
I’ve got a few elderly otherwise intelligent relatives who are good people but Trump supporters. Their go-to defence is that Trump will fix it because he’s a businessman. When it’s pointed out to them that he’s had a lot of businesses that have failed, they then say “but he’s a successful billionaire”. I get a lot of ostrich “head in the sand” vibes.

The giant flaws in US democracy become more apparent daily. The EC is just one of many downright dopey arrangements they persist with.

What makes my blood boil is the arrogance and presumption with which they proceeded to try to impose their “democracy” on other nations (but they were not “imperialist” the Americans, oh no, never), always justifying the outrage by saying it was the world’s best democracy.

Even I figured there must be something in it, for a while back then.

Not any more. Ranked globally, US democracy is very much an also-ran.

I think that's a narrative that's convenient to Trump supporters. It's difficult to believe that you we're so disappointed by the Democrats rejection of Sanders in 2016 that you decide Trump is the answer.

States swung from Blue to Red in 2016 in a big way.

So, whilst you might think it's hard to believe. It did occur.

Was Bernie the main reason? Who knows - but there was a BIG change....

My opinion is if Bernie ran in 2016, he would have been president over Trump. I don't think Trump is the answer now, but I understand why Americans would think he is. I do suspect 2028 will shift back to the democrats though, I think AOC can win it.

I know plenty of younger people in my circle that are big Trump fans. I’m talking otherwise normal people.

Plenty of conservative older people I know think he’s an utter idiot.
Yes he seems to have cut through in a positive way to younger people generally not interested in politics. There's a showman factor they like without the pressing need for any detail

I will never forget when my usual hairdresser was unwell so her young colleague did my hair. Lovely girl maybe mid twenties who started banging on about the imminent arrest of Hillary Clinton and that Trump was going to save the children and save the world. Considering the sharp scissors and chemicals nearby and that I was trapped in a chair thought it best just to ignore.

So people have gone from supporting a socialist to a fascist because he was rejected by the Democrats. Cool story bro.

I saw a street interview with a young American male who said he voted for Trump over Harris simply because DonOld appeared on Rogan and Kamala didn’t. Nothing to do with policy agreement / disagreement.

I have told you several times I'm not sure why there was a big change in Americas voting patterns. The results in these elections are close, it doesn't take much of a shift to decide the president.

I'm just saying that Bernie getting screwed probably played a part in 2016, and I think he was a good Presidental choice.

IMO it's directly related to the pessimism that's completely overwhelmed young people (not just in the US, but in most of the western world).

People under 30 are realising the old promise that if you work/study hard, you'll be able get a good job, buy a house, start a family, retire etc. is no longer a reality.

And the career politicians (both Democrats and Republicans) are largely responsible for this crisis.

So when you're completely hopeless for your future, why not vote for the nutjob, he'll either be right and save everyone, or if not at least it'll be entertaining while the entire country collapses.

that and he went big on social media and podcasts where democrats didn't necessarily do it to the same level.

I think a big part of it was he just captured more people attention of younger people.

same thing is occurring in Australia.

People under 30 are getting jack shit sick their prospects..........dutton could actually get in...........

Goes to show how little they understand politics as well

The Government is to protect, govern and implant positive change for the nation not turn a profit

Yes managing the budget is important but not in the same sense as a business

My experience is that those who enthusiastically support a politician whatever their colours, are invariably left disappointed

So they vote for the party that's voted against every single cost of living relief legislation in Parliament and who admitted that wage suppression was government policy last time they were in power. Conservatism thrives in ignorance.
