Essendon has agreed to receive a first-round compensation selection - currently pick No.7 from the Brisbane Lions - in exchange for Joe Daniher under the AFL’s free agency rules.

General manager of list and recruiting Adrian Dodoro wished Daniher well for his future in Queensland.

“Having selection six and now obtaining selection seven will help strengthen our overall position ahead of the upcoming trade period and national draft,” Dodoro said.

“I would like to thank Brisbane for their dealings in recent weeks. We feel we have reached a fair deal.

“Finally, on behalf of the club, we would like to thank Joe for his contribution to the Essendon Football Club over the past eight seasons and wish him and his family all the very best for their future.”

Will forever regret the player you could have been for us, however sometimes it just doesnt work out.
I wish you all the best and hope that QLD is all you need it to be. I look forward to you playing 99 games of good footy for the Lions before retiring so we still get access to your sons or daughters haha.

Pick 7 is an ok outcome considering everything but the club must hold its head in shame.

We had a generational player, father son. Great name for the Essendon brand. He just needed a few good years of 50+ goals and he would have been a hero to all the young Essendon kids.

This is where you build culture and brand.

Our internal processes, player management, etc, etc is not at the level required. Even with tricky players, personalities you need to have the support structures in place to make sure that your best assets are getting the right attention.

Joe should be sitting alongside other generational players like Hird, Fletcher, Misiti, Long, Mercuri, Lloyd, Lucas, Harvey, T. Daniher, Watson's, Madden. Its a shame we've come to this and the bitter sweet outcome of pick 7.

Yeah we had a shot at keeping him, it didnt work time for both parties to move on.

Probably got lucky he won us that game against the hawks i think.
