Since when do we exile threads while they’re still bouncing around the first page..
McKenna? Begley? McKernan? Bellchambers?

I dunno. He's history, normally we're lightening at having threads moved to the right spots.

I am not going well with this one TBH. Pick 7 better turn out to be a freak.

Would it make you feel better to know that in the past 3 seasons he's played;

15 games total, at an average of;

5 games per season, for 12.4 disposals, 5.7 marks, 1.2 goals, 1.2 tackles and 4.1 clangers per game.

He's given us 3 goals in 2020, 7 in 2019 and 8 in 2018.

Of those 3 goals in 2020, he kicked all of them in a single game, then went goal-less for 3 games.

Absolute freak talent, but on-field, for us, he's barely contributed in 3 years. We need someone more reliable to build around now, even if they're not the super-talent that Joe is.

I get all this, but I love Joey so much as an Essendon person, and now he's not one.
I love Joey too but I think it’s good for the club to move on. It’s like a girlfriend/boyfriend you love and can’t let go even though she/he’s bad for you. You look back later on and realise it was the best thing to happen.

Thankfully we’ll still be able to see Joey play and appreciate his talents without agonising over the set shots lol.

Do you have evidence to the contrary? He was always a talent who could take big grabs, read the game and kick long. Other than physically filling out, exactly what aspect of his game did he work on that was noticeable?
Timing on his marking certainly improved, and you could see that his approach to goalkicking changed (not that his accuracy improved notably). 2017 wasn't half bad. I can't comment on leading patterns or work rate type stuff since I have no idea what the benchmark is, but I think he did at least have the fitness base to play 100% game time. Up until that point I think it was going okay.

The injury was brutal though, I think that robbed him of a lot of motivation and we know there was rumours about not applying himself to the rehab program early days, largely from Brendon Goddard I think. That's as much mental demons as anything imo.

On the other hand he does seem like a fairly laid back character who has at least another level to get to (that level being doing what he can do consistently). I think he relies on his talent rather than good sense. Whereas combining the two would make him a far better player.

On the other hand you have a Cale Hooker, who came to the club based on his athletic attributes and was robbed of them early, but put in the hard work to still be a great player for the club. I guess sometimes too much luck can spoil a person?

I guess what I'm talking about is more working on your game above and beyond standard training sessions. Yeah his timing improved on leads and marking, but that's often just time training and playing with his team mates at training.

2017 showed what can happen when he does put extra effort in, but he had to be hand held to do it and when that stopped, he regressed.

Don't get me wrong, I love Joey and not all players are made of the same mental stuff. Which is kind of my point. We are losing an amazing talent. But a talent that's not matched with the mental grit and determination to work his arse off to be the best he can be. Even his injury probably could have been dealt with a year or so earlier if he had of been upfront and worked hard from the start.

I have no trouble believing he will work hard this coming off-season and year because he wants to prove himself at Brisbane. It's beyond that initial drive to be accepted and when he feels at home where I think it's likely to drop off again.

This nails it.

Franklin had the talent and the work ethic to make the most of it.

Joe seems to have the talent to get by doing 80% of the work, and still be a high level AFL player. Whereas if he had the work ethic, he'd have been capable of so much more.

I think he's the kind of guy that when everything is going good, when he's enjoying his footy, when he's playing the way he wants to play, that it comes easily. It's when those things aren't working, when it's more about team structure and not taking mark of the year, when you're injured and can't get on the park but have to do the boring rehab, when you need to knuckle down and work on your weakness doing stuff like practicing your goal-kicking routine, that it seems to get to him.

Every interview he says the same thing; "I just want to enjoy my football"

Contrast that with McGrath, who is constantly talking about the team, and how important seeing his teammates succeed is to him;

“Leadership is something that comes naturally to me. I don’t force it. I love my teammates and love driving them to succeed. That’s why I’m here; I want to win and bring this club success, and any way I can do that I’m happy to do. The more people I can drag along with me and improve, that’s so important for me.”

I’ll settle for a Dustin Martin clone as a replacement....
