I come in peace.
I think you guys are going through what we were last year with Hannebery. He was the lifeblood of the club, Rising Star winner (played his first game for us while he was still at school), 3xAA, AFLCA Award winner, premiership player. However, he was on about $800k and looked like his body was shot. Along came the saints who offered to take him off our hands and it was a traumatic time for the fans. Basically, we gave him up for a couple of 2nd round picks even though he was still contracted. We didn't set the bar too high to get the deal done because we saw that the move may be good for both clubs. Did the saints get a steal? Maybe, but it turns out that if we had kept him then we would have paid another $800k this season for another 4 games.
We were able to get that money off our cap and the rumours last year were that we had a big fish in our sights. I don't know if JD was the fish, but if it was then this has been going on for some time. And let's face it, every club chats to contracted players all the time, so none of us can get on a high horse.
I feel for you guys because we were going through the same thing last year. I think that the worst thing to do would be to set the bar so high that the Swans wait for another year while you pay another year of his salary in your cap for how many games?
Your concern is touching. Ok you can have him for nothing, thanks.

Joe is a huge upgrade on himmelberg/Finlayson.

Possibly, but they would have to fork out for someone they don’t really need.

Ungarie's only a five hour drive to Sydney. Joe knows what Sydney's about. I don't doubt that they would have spruiked its benefits though.

He has only mentioned the Sydney lifestyle though. In my view that means we should also be talking with GWS.
He grew up in aberfeldie

It’s not.

But you don’t have to believe me, I’m just a bloke on the internet.

JD was asked by the club about the meeting and said he was just catching up with a friend. Which who knows, maybe he was.

But I’d say there’s little doubt they discussed footy and life, none of which JD is too satisfied with right now.

At some point Harley (and others) have sold him the idea of living in Sydney and it sounds pretty good to him at the moment.

Aren’t there rules about talking to a contracted player?

What Harley did is probably common across the industry but the first time I have seen an AFL CEO so blatantly lie about it to media.

Yeah nah. We’re not salary dumping him and he’s a much more valuable commodity than a broken Hanners. Appreciate the parallel but this is more O’Meara if he were contracted than holy shit we’ve gotta pay $800k to a bloke we don’t want and the saints are desperate to get anyone.

Swans didn't want hannebery. We do want joe. Thats the difference.

Swans thought Hannebery probably wouldn't get better. If you really think JD is going to get back to what he was then you should ask for a lot. If you have doubts then they will be reflected in the deal. There are trades where both clubs do well out of them. There doesn't always have to be a winner and a loser.

If you don’t think he’s gonna get fit, you wouldn’t be chasing him and offering “lifestyle”, likely security of a big fat long contract.

You’re buying him on the basis he’s 2017 Joe or close to it and we’re selling him on that basis. If not, we’ll just keep him.

Correct. Joe has had surgery and Essendon want to keep him and get him back to kicking 60m goals on ANZAC day. If a trade happens it will be one that Essendon is satisfied with.

Joe is a head case. Joe can’t get on the park. Joe can’t kick straight. Joe doesn’t provide any defensive pressure. Despite being in the leadership group (along with Razzle Dazzly Doo), Joe isn’t a footy leaders arseh*le. Joe is a liability and the hole left in our forward line while we’ve waited for the messiah that never was to return has been hugely detrimental to our club.
Master stroke to offload in the last year he has any value left. Tippett II

4 first round picks should do it.....

Seriously though pick 5 and next years first gets it done right away. But lets just see how keen sydney really are. Whats the reported offer 4 years at 1 mil a year? If thats true then wow

I prefer to live in Hawaii but you don't see me leaving Melbourne and going there

First world problems

What a baby
But you'd be silly not to consider it if you were offered a job there (and your personal life allowed it).

The club is not going to let Joe walk out for nothing. Sydney obviously think he can get over the OP with the reported offer they have tabled. I think we will hold firm with his value. If Sydney don't come to the table, it opens the door for GWS. I am sure they will ask the question.

FWIW, I think GWS are in the flag window next few years where as Syd are not IMO.

Anything can happen. Buddy was a lock for GWS, then Swans "stole" him at the last minute.
If GWS sent back Himmelberg and a pick I would be stoked.
Bring in Jenkins for a year and focus on King for 2021.

If Swans are willing to pay $1m a year as has been reported then it’s going to be two firsts. If it’s just one first rounder then why wouldn’t we just keep him?

We then have him for a year and may even change his mind. We’d get a first as comp anyway plus he’d be a RFA so we could even match any bid.

That’s fine if Swans want him but it’s always going to involve two firsts. Not sure how Swans fans will think it’ll be anything else.

Not sure about the reports of $1m per year. This is trade period so most of the "reporting" is only opinion. The figure probably comes from one person who said he may be worth that and then it gains a life of its own.
I wouldn't expect that the last 2 seasons have increased his value all that much.

With Buddy still on what $1.4/$1.5 mil, $1mil by 4 is hardly a pie in the sky number, it's what these sort of guys are worth & as such when it comes to trading them, that value has to be reflected on either side of the equation.

If that is what he is worth then I'm sure it was reflected in the extension that essendon offered him.
