A) I was hoping Wellsy would have played in the midfield full time this year, instead of wing. Gotta happen.

B) Without bagging our captain I said elsewhere earlier today that we need to move him gradually from the midfield into half back or defensive forward by late next season.

Wellsy would have been in the midfield more i believe but for his knee, and i agree with point B too. Simmo is a great North man but his awareness and quality out of the middle are not what an Ablett or Burgoyne are. We should be using him less in the middle and more on the half back helping as a link man and Archer type role as he reads the play very well and is very courageous.

Essentially, that I have no problem with. Guys like Jess and The Echelon coming through, starts to give us some viable midfield options.

What I do have a problem with though, is people continually harping on about his "bad kicking". It's over-stated to the extreme.

The following is an attempt to revive a rubbish thread:

For us to take the next step next year, IMO Daniel Wells needs to do what Ablett has done this year. He needs to move into the midfield full-time and become our number 1 midfielder. Enough of this easing him via wings and flanks. He needs to be our midfield maestro.

To achieve this, Simmo's role needs to change. I'm not sure if playing forward or in defense will suit him better, but one or the other needs to happen.

I agree there. To bring out Wells' true potential and to give him a greater impact on the game, he needs to be given a primary role conducting thigns in the midfield... Do u think there will come a day when Wells walks out on the club? I sure as hell hope not!

I think its just the action of him kicking Swallow too has an awkward style. Yes look Simmo can hit targets but like certain traits of other players supporters always hone in on any errors or when times are tough. For sheer quality out of the middle Simmo needs to be phased out of there with just small spurts in the centre next yr, around the ground its ok but for quality centre breaks, like Shaun Burgoyne yesterday, they are worth plenty to a team, run and carry players are crucial from the centre. We have the player but will he succeed

Adam Simpsons game has annoyed me so much during the year and he didn't fail to do so yesterday either.

He has no problem finding the ball BUT every time he gets it and kicks it, he never looks who he is kicking it too. He just puts it on the boot and it results in a costly turnover.
Also he shouldn't be delivering the footy into the forward line coz he is an unco kick.

I say play him in defense as we did in the 90's coz he can take a mark and leave him there.

I and others on this forum have been pointing out Simpson's shocking disposal for years but for some reason many just do not see it, or don't want to! He has been getting away with it far too long and doesn't seem interested in rectifying it. Yes he gets heaps of the ball and his courage cannot be questioned, but he fails to hurt the opposition because 90% of his kicks go straight to an opponent. This is why other sides do not bother to tag him. His wayward disposal would not be tolerated if he played for any other top side.

Face facts, The Other Dean and the real Dean. This is serious problem which can no longer be ignored.

Exactly. Defensive/negating roles only for Simmo. He is Mr Sloppy. And his lack of pace saw him get tackled numerous times during the finals.

In a word...nup.

Every time one of these threads appears (I believe DevilFish sets monthly reminders to do so in his Calendar), there is just as many posters who jump on and tell you guys that you have got it all wrong.

Guess it's gonna be one of those unsolvable BF conundrums for the ages. The fact is, Simmo's not going anywhere. Sadly, for the time being, DevilFish (and your good self) will just have to remain in a state of agog-ness over this.

Reading shit like this after a loss is almost as bad as the loss itself. People bag opposing fans, but **** me swinging if we don't have some of stupidest, most irrational pack of arseclowns following this footy club.

You're all stupid and shouldn't be allowed to watch football.

Gee, you've bowled me around my legs there The Other Dean bowling off-spin! Simmo has many other attributes & is in our best 22 but my criticsim is not, & has never been of him, but more of the way he is used. His poor skill & lack of pace surely mean that in today's game, there is no room for him in the midfield. And to top it off, he is our captain & to me, a captain should be able to step up when the going gets tough & turn it around but he simply lacks the ability (pace & skill) to do so.
Obviously, he will be at NMFC for another 3 years or so & I don't want to see him go. But I would love to see him on a half-back flank or back pocket where he can use his great overhead ability & ability to read the play in one-on-one contests.

But point taken, I have deleted the monthly reminder from my calender.

Agree completely. We have a bunch of cool heads off the backline in Pratt and Firrito. Simpson would be no exception. Very very good in a tight space working it out to a teammate. Thats what he is best at. Not running freely through the middle which is something thats happening quite often these days. In fact, Simmo is probably my least preferred option in the team when in space and moving the ball forward.

Disposal in tight spaces and under pressure is his forte (the game against PA an exception). Much better suited off HB than in the middle for mine.

If they were going to put a kid like adams in the centre and have simmo play the occassional role on the HBF it wouldnt be too bad.

Look i like Simmo alot and has been a gr8 servant of this club,

but the 1 played that pissed me off was in the first quarter where instead of kicking it to a 1 on 1 contest he looked to handball it off twice and instead just booted it and went 2 a 2 on 1 for port and minimised our chances at goal. just look simmo.

How did we discuss this issue when BF wasnt around back in 99?

I remember seeing him do the same blind kick out of packs all through 99...but guess what the difference was, W.Carey outmarking at CHF, or bouncing over heads into the 'paddock' for whoever to run onto.

Come this time in footy it is such a low % form of play that typically ends in a turnover.

gaso

can anybody confirm a story i heard a while back about simpson and swallow?

they where having a kick to kick at training and swollow asked simpson why is he kicking with his opposite foot(which turned out to be his left)
