Being only 30 seconds, I doubt that the message could have been gotten to Simmo and then to the umpire anyway.

And fair chance, as Simmo is a midfielder, that he wouldn't have been able to get the message to the umpire when the ball is in play anyway.

Perhaps you can also add this little piece that appears in the AFL Laws of the Game, Introduction Part C:

NATURE AND OBJECTS OF AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL

Australian Football is a game played between two teams competing in accordance with these Laws. The objective of each team playing Australian Football is to win by scoring more points than the opposing team. The winner of a match of Australian Football is the team which has scored, in accordance with these Laws, the greater number of points at the conclusion of the match.

Are you intimating that Sydney didn't play in accordance of the laws?

How about this for a question?

What would have happened if Simmo had called for a head count but by the time it was organised the extra player had left the field but the video evidence showed that at the time the count was called for the extra player was there?

I'd love to hear how AA would explain that one.

Its exactly why this rule is a dinosaur and very impractical. It made was when there was only one or two interchanges a match.

Send it on to JB and Euge JD-R, in case they want to go on with the discussion with AA.

I suspected as much, but wasn't sure. I suspect that the fourth umpire would've alerted the field umpires of the 19th man who'd only just come off though.

T'toes
I agree... it needs to be sent on to the Big Guys

It just shows that all the people, AA included, who are washing their hands of all this by saying "Well it's North's problem 'coz they didn't call a player count as the rules say" haven't actually read the rules properly and thought it through.

If we had've called a player count it would have been to our detriment and almost assuredly cost us the other two points.

Damned if we had've and damned because we didn't.

Giving the little dweeb some credit, he did admit last night that the rule was out of date and would implement a mid-season change of the rule.

Soooo, let's say in the 2008 Grand Final, Boomer is streaming down the wing, close to the boundary, with Gary Ablett in hot pursuit.

Could Leigh Brown step over the interchange from the bench, lay a "legal" sheppard on Gary Ablett and step back off the field.

There would be no stoppage, therefore no count could be called, so what would happen?

That would bring the 'extreme case' into the equation according to the AFL charter. It time the rule was overhauled and sideline officials would hold red flags for infringements like players coming on earlier before the player coming off has crossed the line. Result would be a free & a 50m penalty from where the next stoppage occurs .

Could someone PM me their contact details?

Wouldn't matter. In accordance with the rules the umpire could only count the players ON the field at the time he's stopped the play to do it.

All the 4th umpire can do is note the 19th guy, exactly as he has done in this case, and then leave it up to the 'controlling body'......... which has got us nowhere.

So we'd STILL be stuffed.
Here is a think for people to think about simpson calls a head count sydney get there extra player off in time so head count is only 18. Sydney get free kick and 50m and win the game. Then it goes to afl like it did with same result north then lose game and sydney wins on both accounts. So in saying this the afl could not of got it more wrong.

If only AA can seethis. I guess he was protecting his boyfriends once again.

Disappointing game for our club, no doubt about it. We were wiped of the park by the Crows (AGAIN).

Simmo probably would be one of a few that could hold his head up high. He was a hard worker all night & even tho he made a couple of turnovers you would have to say he was our main midfielder & the stats would also point this out. If we had more of our team play with some guts like Simmo we might have actually had a chance of winning.

Harvey one of the Roos greatest: Simpson
20th May 2008, 13:00 WST

A day after Melbourne’s retiring captain David Neitz was hailed as one of his club’s finest, North Melbourne’s Brent Harvey has won similar praise ahead of his 250th AFL game against the Western Bulldogs on Sunday.

Kangaroos skipper Adam Simpson placed Harvey in the same exalted company as the club’s games record-holder Glenn Archer, premiership captain Wayne Schimmelbusch and champion centre half-forward Wayne Carey.

“He’s one of our greatest,” Simpson said of Harvey.

“He’s won three best and fairests he’s going to break the games record eventually and he’ll probably go down as one of our greatest players.

“The least we can do is have a win for him on the weekend.”

Harvey, 30, and a three-time All-Australian, has shown no signs of his form dropping off as he approaches the twilight of his career.

After finishing equal runner-up in the Brownlow medal last year, Harvey has been the Kangaroos standout player this season, leading the club’s possessions with 192 after eight games.

Simpson said his club had a history of playing well in milestone games and cited the team’s 26-point win against the Bulldogs on Archer’s 300th match in round 13 last year.

But Simpson admitted the team would have to match the ‘Dogs in winning more of the contested ball - a hallmark of their unbeaten early season run.

With the Kangaroos facing a testing period in the next six weeks, including games against Brisbane at the Gabba, reigning premiers Geelong and the undefeated Hawthorn, Simpson said the team had to claim the Dogs’ scalp to remain in touch.

“We’ve probably beaten the teams we’ve meant to have beaten and fallen short against Adelaide and Hawthorn,” Simpson said.

“The Doggies are in great form and we’re got a really tough six weeks coming up.

“We’re playing some top teams and yeah you’ve got to win a few of these.”

“Between third and 14th is not much and if you win the close ones, you’re in the hunt and if you lose those close ones - you look at Fremantle - you do fall away pretty quickly.”

Simpson said the club had no problems adjusting to the new interchange rules but said the players would have to be more careful when coming off unannounced because of fatigue.

“If you want to come off, you might have to wave to the bench, you can still come off, it just might take a few seconds to organise,” Simpson said.

Yeah I think he will break Arch's games record, and then some. He has had such a good run with injuries and is basically in career best form, I don't see why he couldn't go on for another 4-5 years.

By the time he's done he will be right up there, no doubt.

We played pretty poor, but we got away with a win.

Top game by Simmo, in his 30's & still in our top 5 players consistently.

Simmo had a few decisions go against him, one that cost us a goal also had one good decision which resulted in a goal for us & a very important one at that. His work in the clearances was very important & his tackling was very good.
