  • KB asked if our team is better this year then it was last year. Simmo replied with well the young players have all had an extra year under their belt.
  • KB said how he admired Matt Campbell and Lindsay Thomas, the work they do when they don't have the ball. Simpson said yer, hey are great, may only get 10 possies a game but they kick their goals and do their job.
  • KB asked about Leigh Brown. Simmo said he works really hard, lost some weight, looks really slim. Simmo also said that Brown is on his last Chance, an if he doesn't preform this year he will be in some strife next year.
  • Simmo said Gibbo should be available after the Bye.
  • Simmo also said that Leigh Adams did his knee on the weekend. Said that our team do not have alot of injureis, and soft tissue injuries are almost non existance.
  • Said Hale is available for selection this week, siclair got 35 possestions in the 2's and was very dangerous.
  • Said tha Lochy will be ready once he gain his fitness and form back as he just got over the heel injury.
  • Said that it would be an honor to represent the Vics in the 150th year match, said he thought that Hoomer would make it for sure, and saiid that ast time harvey put the big V on he won the Medal.

Does Adams need a full reco?

Does Adams need a full reco?

Simmo said that they lost him to a knee. From that I'd suggest that it will be a season ending injury. The ground was very sandy and reminded me of Telstra Dome a few years ago. Lucky there weren't any more such injuries. Pretty hard to have grounds perfect given the drought but not much give in the sand. Funnily enough some there thought it was in better shape than last year?

Thanks TDF.

Doesn't sound good for Adams. I hope the club gives him some sort of role to play while he's out injured. He's had a horror run and his body is 'stocky' and could suffer from a long period on the sidelines.

Did anyone else catch Simmo being interviewed tonight on 3AW? Apparently, on the news (I didn't catch it), he was shown making some comments about how hard the MCG surface is. Anyway, on 3AW, he was at pains to point out that he wasn't complaining about the surface. He was just pointing out that it was different to TD. Then he said, 'Who am I to complain anyway? I could have been playing on the Gold Coast!' I loved this comment from Simmo! :thumbsu:

During the interview it was also mentioned that Gerard Healy had signed up as a NM member today. Simmo jokingly said that he had heard that Healy had signed up as a member for life and that he would have his credit card automatically deducted every year!

I think On The Couch on Monday had Mike, Gerard and Wallsy all as North members but wondering where the crowd was? I hope they scanned before they entered and didn't enter on their media passes :)

Great game for us, beating Collingwood & all.:)

Typical captains game from Simmo. He was there at critical moments in the game & stood up superbly. One thing simmo did this week which he rarely does these days is kick a goal & what a goal it was, I guess he can thank Leigh Brown for that smart tap on but anyway it was great to see simmo get into the goals.

Cant leave this report without talking a little bit about that bounce in the last quarter, well all I'll say is that simmo is still running & saying thanks umps.;)

Hmmm, good summary NRB, don't overlook the 'turnover' by Rhyce Shaw before Ed Lower BUTTER'd up the spill and slapped it fast on his opposite foot. The Umps gave them a few favourable bounces also. ;)

Definitely cannot overlook the turnover by Rhyce & also some of the bounces that went Collingwoods way. I didn't mean for it to look like it all went our way, because it certainly didn't. I just was more giving a report about simmos game & that he was the recipient of that bounce.

If it was Boomer who got that ball i wouldn't even bring it up.

We were robbed.:mad:

It ended in a draw, but with the fact that the Swans had 19 players on the ground & the player that should have left (Jolly) had an impact on the game to help make it a draw, we should of got all 4 points. Instead the AFL have chosen to fine the Swans $50k, $25k suspended, which we all know is just a cover up.

Anyway, lets talk about Simmos game. Well lets just say i hardly noticed him all day, which makes me wounder is that a good thing or bad?

The only time i really noticed Simmo was late in the game when we were 1 point in front & spud took the kick in from a point & went long to Simmo, this was the start of all the 19 man issue & Jolly ended up sealing the ball off Simmo. I'd say if Jolly wasn't there Simmo would have cleared the ball away & it would of been GAME OVER!!!

In a nutshell (for those that don't want to read the detail):
The umpire couldn't call a stoppage of play to do a count until the "first available opportunity" which was AFTER the tying score, by which time Jolly was off - which would have made it worse for us.

Explanation:
Having gone over both what happened AND the actual rules with a fine tooth comb I've come to the conclusion that we're actually damn lucky Simmo DIDN'T call a player count.

Due to the quick time in which it all happened and the details of the actual player count rule there's no way he could have called a count AND had Sydney sprung with too many men - in fact had he done so it would have almost certainly COST us the other two points.

So firstly here's the rules:

5.5 COUNTING OF PLAYERS
5.5.1 Request by Captain
The captain or acting captain of a Team may at any time during a Match request that the field Umpire count the number of Players of the opposing Team who are on the Playing Surface.

5.5.2 Procedure
(a) Where a request is made under Law 5.5.1, the field Umpire shall:
(i) stop play at the first available opportunity;
(ii) call into line within the Centre Square the Players of both Teams who are at the time on the Playing Surface and count the number of Players;
(iii) upon completing the count, ensure that each Team has the permitted number of Players on the Playing Surface
and then recommence play at the position on the Playing Surface where the field Umpire stopped play; and
(iv) as soon as practicable after the Match, report to the Controlling Body that a request has been made to count the number of Players in a Team nd the number of Players actually counted.
(b) The maximum number of Players permitted on the Playing Surface at the same time is 18 or, in circumstances where a Player(s) has been ordered from the Playing Surface under Law 20, 18 less the Player(s) ordered from the Playing Surface.

5.5.3 Players Exceeding Permitted Number
Where a Team has more than the permitted number of Players on the Playing Surface, the following shall apply:
(a) a field Umpire shall award a Free Kick to the captain or acting captain of the opposing Team, which shall be taken at the Centre Circle or where play was stopped, whichever is the greater penalty against the offending Team;
(b) a Fifty-Metre Penalty shall then be imposed from the position where the Free Kick was awarded; and
(c) the Team shall lose all points which it has scored in the Match up to the time of the count.

5.5.4 Correct Number and Request Without Merit
Where a count reveals that the opposing Team has the permitted
number of Players on the Playing Surface, the following
shall apply:
(a) a field Umpire shall award a Free Kick to the captain or acting captain of the opposing Team, which shall be taken at the Centre Circle or where play was stopped, whichever is the greater penalty against the offending Team;
(b) a Fifty-Metre Penalty shall then be imposed from the position where the Free Kick was awarded; and
(c) if a field Umpire is of the opinion that a request was made under Law 5.5.1 primarily to delay play or such request did not have sufficient merit, the field Umpire shall report the Player who requested the count for Time Wasting under Law 19.2.2.

The important part of this entire saga is 5.5.2 (a) (i):
5.5.2 Procedure
(a) Where a request is made under Law 5.5.1, the field Umpire shall:
(i) stop play at the first available opportunity;

The initial report concerned 19 men being on for "30 seconds", to which a few sound bites today (Wednesday) from the Swans was somehow becoming "18 seconds". It really doesn't matter because even if it was the 30 sec Simmo wouldn't have had the time to call a head count.

Going by the times "Footy Classified", White comes on at 27:07 as Firrito is about to kick out. From when they say he came on until the kick is 4 seconds (obviously not enough time to get a message to the Captain) then the ball is in play.

This is where 5.5.2 (a) (i) comes into the scenario. The umpire CANNOT stop play until "the first available opportunity". This is a mark, free, ball-up, throw-in or score, ie a STOPPAGE. We've seen this before when people are screaming for the ump to stop play when a stretcher is on but his hands are tied until there is an actual stoppage. You may recall where this ridiculous loophole saw the Duck pick up a possesion while ON THE STRECTCHER in Round 1 of '97 against Melbourne (was there anything he couldn't do on a footy field?).

The passage of play neatly fits into the 30sec bracket, remembering that the play doesn't stop until the goal umpire signals the actual point. 30 seconds, by which time Jolly is now off.

Even if you go by the Swans timing of 18 seconds, Jolly gets his possesion at 27:19 and according to them is off by 27:25, twelve seconds BEFORE the ball goes through (while Goodes is running in the pocket).

Even PLAYING with the figures, 18 seconds from when Jolly first picks up the ball STILL has him off as the ball goes through.

Both Simmo AND the umpire would come out looking like gooses here. If at ANY stage he calls for a player count, the first opportunity the umpire has to stop play is once the tying point has gone through and Jolly is off.

By the letter of the law the Swans would've had the legal number of men on at the time of the count and therefore would've recieved a free kick and a fifty metre penalty (in accordance with Rule 5.5.4 (a) & (b) and Simpson risking himself getting reported under (c)).

If the umpire had deemed it to be at the goal line the free would've been a definite winning goal. From where Simmo was, just outside the fifty, the penalty would have gone down to the square and been straightened up for an almost certain winning score. From the centre would have put a Swans player roughly 20-25 metres out directly in front for an almost certain winning score.

The ONLY time a player count could have been called and NOT cost us the match is the 4-ish seconds between White coming on and Spud kicking out. Not possible.

So from the earliest time he could POSSIBLY have known Simmo is stuffed whether he calls a count (and costs us the match) or not (which is what happened and the AFL are trying to blame him to get themselves out of a pile of crap).

No matter which way you look at it, even IF the onus was on us to call the player count, we couldn't have without it making the result WORSE for us. The Swans would've had 19 men on for a crucial play (breaking a fundamental rule) but WON the match in accordance with player count rules. All because it happened so damn fast.

(I was going to post a YouTube link to the entire Footy Classified segment but my DVD recorder just killed the entire recording.:mad:)

Send it on to JB and Euge JD-R, in case they want to go on with the discussion with AA.

I suspected as much, but wasn't sure. I suspect that the fourth umpire would've alerted the field umpires of the 19th man who'd only just come off though.

T'toes

Could someone PM me their contact details?

I suspect that the fourth umpire would've alerted the field umpires of the 19th man who'd only just come off though.

Wouldn't matter. In accordance with the rules the umpire could only count the players ON the field at the time he's stopped the play to do it.

All the 4th umpire can do is note the 19th guy, exactly as he has done in this case, and then leave it up to the 'controlling body'......... which has got us nowhere.

So we'd STILL be stuffed.

Soooo, let's say in the 2008 Grand Final, Boomer is streaming down the wing, close to the boundary, with Gary Ablett in hot pursuit.

Could Leigh Brown step over the interchange from the bench, lay a "legal" sheppard on Gary Ablett and step back off the field.

There would be no stoppage, therefore no count could be called, so what would happen?

Leigh Brown?

No ____ing way.

Without a doubt a free would be paid and he'd most likely be reported - although then finding an actual charge in the lawbook may be intruiging.

We could also use the Sydney argument that he didn't touch the ball so it didn't matter.:D

I tried PM'ing all the to 'Euge' but it's just too damn long. Anyone got their emails?

The count would take place at THAT stoppage (most likely) or the next one but only after the Geelong captain calls for it. Given that he'd spend a few seconds working out what the hell just happened, Brown would most likely have stepped back off by that time. Sounds like the lid could be coming right off the proverbial can of worms!!

Great post JD-Roo, you did what I wanted to do but I just bought Assassins Creed and I cbf'd searching when I got home :D
