Vaughan is ok when they don’t start getting into that whole Aus vs England s**t. Because the poms play so much cricket and they send a commentary team everywhere, most of their main commentators watch a lot of it; David Gower, Nasser, Athers - these guys as parochial as they can be, they actually know a s**t tonne about opposition sides and players and instantly that gives them a leg up on half the guys they share a commentary box with.

Of the regulars from around the world, I’d say Bishop, Haysman, Bhogle, Whateley, who only does radio anyway, they’re among the few who you can say that about. Nicholas is another who breathes it. O’Keeffe picks and chooses a bit but I think he watches a reasonable amount
I'm not sure I'd put Whateley in that category. He's a genuine 4 weeks a year follower of cricket.

More recently yes, but with ABC in some of his earlier years he has been a genuinely insightful commentator with some real good knowledge of guys visiting and when he didn’t know a lot about the backgrounds of some of the lesser lights from the touring teams he made it his business to pick the brains of those who did. I think as his footballing profile has grown, that has diminished significantly though and in more recent times your appraisal is probably pretty accurate

Ponting probably knows more about any of them given he coaches with and against them.

Yeah he would have a very deep knowledge of the players and the tactical side speaks for itself he demonstrates that regularly. It’s ironic because he probably shows more tactical nous now than he ever did as a captain where he was more about just doing it by the numbers than any real major knack for the job

It's much easier to look like a bold attacking captain in the commentary box like Ponting does than when you are actually out on the field as the captain as you don't have to wear the consequences of losing the game from making those bold attacking calls.

Warne was a classic one for that too, he always made those bold attacking calls in the commentary box like calling for early declarations etc.

He never put those calls into practice by being the actual captain though, yet he is still hailed as the best test captain that could have been.

If I’m forced I’ll pick Fox.

I think they’re both good though, and each are preferable to Nine on its deathbed.

I do wonder why Vaughan, Smith and Shastri are part of the team though. Are the viewers actually interested in their input versus a an Australian-heavy team at 7?
Absolutely. The international additions at Fox have been a breath of fresh air and add a more global feel to the Tests, as opposed to a summer of Aussie cheerleading and very little knowledge of touring players that we've seen from time to time over the years, especially towards the end of Nine's days.

Watching ch7 yesterday some of the commentators kept referring to the Pakistan players only by their fielding positions. Not convinced they could actually name them in the moment.

I certainly like them. Just wasn’t sure if there are enough viewers who agree to justify it.

Harsha Bhogle will be on Fox Cricket for at least the Melbourne test.
Interesting given India are currently playing South Africa.

It's good to have a more international flavour in the FoxSports commentating team.

Didn't warnie do a few wild declarations for Hampshire as captain to force a result.

He had full reign with Hampshire for a while so I would be curious to know some of those county games that were rain affected how funky did warnie get.

Pakistan players due to not being in IPL mean a lot there players have less of a profile.

Plus they are always chopping and changing around the fringes with Babar, Rizwan and Shaheen Afridi being the 3 most recognisable guys who are generally always there.

I didn't see much of Warnie's career at Hampshire so I have no idea what sort of declarations he made as captain there but it would probably be easier to take more risks with early declarations etc when you are playing county cricket as opposed to playing international test matches.
