1. GWS has just reached 25,392 members- this is a 51.5% increase cf. the same date in 2019. Extraordinary (in NSW) for a club that has been in the AFL for only 8 years, based in Sydney's previously barren for AF WS.

The 2019 final tally of 30,108 (which included c. 5500 from the ACT) will be easily broken in 2020.
30,000+ easily surpasses virtually all non-AF pro sporting clubs in NSW & Qld. (Swans in 2019 had 60,000+; Broncos & South Sydney also reach 30,000+).
Many pro clubs (a few in existence for 100+ years) in NSW & Qld. well under 20,000 final members in 2019.

2. GWS CEO D. Matthews said on 9.2.20, on Radio 1017AM Sky Big Sport Breakfast, GWS will reach c. 35,000 members in 2020, & possibly 50,000 the next few years.

I suspect the majority of Sydney memberships are less than a full 8 game season for Giants' Stadium matches. For the 3 Canberra games, only 3 game memberships exist.
To count as being an Official member in the AFL, one must be a minimum 3 game member, having paid at least $50.

50,000 would be a stunning achievement for GWS.

All Matthews' early membership predictions in the last 7 years (when he made a prediction in every year) has been vindicated by the final years' tally.

Asked about membership in 5 years time, Matthews replied

"...I would like to see 50,000...35,000 members this year, get to 50,000 in 2 to 3 years ...17 other clubs, most about 100 to 150 years old...we want to be as robust as we can be...our absolute priority is western Sydney...Essendon, under Sheedy, was once the second most supported club in the rest of Australia... This (Essendon) example is set for us. There is no limitation for us. We want to grow our fan base in any way we can".

(go to 4 minutes 20 secs. - 6 mins. 55 secs.)

EDIT:

3. GWS has some very wealthy supporters from Pimco Bonds in the US (who control over $300 billion in assets). These US supporters, some of whom regularly visit Australia to watch GWS games, have taken over the sponsorship Rights from Spotless- & are paying GWS $2.5m. pa to rename their stadium "Giants Stadium".

(go to post #1162; & post#1174- P.Williams 27.9.19 tweet, for the full Pimco Bonds GWS article in The Australian).

About 5.5m. people live in the USA who are immigrants from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka & Bangladeshi- but most are from India.

When asked about the AFL game that GWS has recently stated it wishes to play in the USA, Matthews said

"There will be a meaningful 20-20 competition established across America...with facilities (cricket grounds, with large accomodation for fans etc. -my words)... We have a lot of partners (ie GWS & AFL supporters- my words) in the US, we have a lot of people who are encouraging us to take a game".
(go to 7 mins.2 secs. - 8 mins. 30 secs. of Radio 1017 link above)
I will give credit here the membership number so far for this season is a good result for gws after making the gf let’s hope we can finally start to see some similar growth in there home crowd numbers for spotless stadium this season as well !

Hills Shire Times/Daily Telegraph A. Lulham 12.2

"The introduction of AFLW has sparked an explosion of interest in the girls' & women's game in Sydney's West with a crucial competition (female U10's Division- my words) being introduced for AFL Western Sydney juniors in 2020...It wasn't until 2016 that there was an under 15 girls camp for the first time".

Clubs who have expressed an interest in starting U10 female teams are: Baulkham Hills, Blacktown, Kellyville/Rosehill, Camden, Ingleburn, Blue Mountains Kangaroos, Emu Plains/Glenmore, Penrith, Greystanes, & Parramatta.

The first ever girls' comp in Sydney's WS was the U15 girls in 2016- ie prior to 2016, NO girls' comp. teams (of any age) ever existed in the WS.

In 2019 Sydney's WS female AF comp. had:-

. U11- 1 Division (many girls playing in it are only 8 y.o & 9 y.o.)
. U13- 2 Divisions
. U15- 2 Divisions
. U18- 1 Division

The biggest female AF growth in the WS in the last few years has been in club female Auskick, for girls 5 y.o -8 y.o. In the next 10 years, therefore, it can be confidently predicted (following the usual GR AF trajectory) that WS female club comp. nos. will approx double.

(scroll down to tweet 12.2.20 "Meet AFL's Newest & Youngest Trailblazers" for full article.
There are also other articles on the interesting background/why they started to play AF etc. of current GWS AFLW players. Scroll to tweets dated 27.1, 2.2 & 4.2)

And who's going to pay for the expansion of the stadium?

As I said it’s not a billion dollars to expand it.
It’s not even 100mil

Costed around 30 to 40mil.

And if we are drawing enough to warrant it, along with the Thunder and other events that are held there, then I’m sure it would be easy to get from government or 3rd parties

They handed over 2 billion (200mil + alone for Parra which was never close to full in the 1st place, unless it was a Sydney derby for A-League) for 3 stadiums for football and league that “didn’t need them”.

Didn't come close to filling stadium last year yet demands multi million upgrade - delusion

Give yourself an uppercut wanderbaby.

I’ve never once demanded an expansion.

I’ve said there are plans for if and when the possibility arises.

Home crowds down from seasons past, miserable TV ratings, couldn't sell all grand final allotment - doesn't accord with those numbers. Clubs have a history of a history fudging member numbers - you guys taking it to new level

Moore Park & Homebush rectangular stadiums to be completed. NRL to get upgrade to suburban stadiums for construction delay. Proposed soccer second division will put more weight behind this. You guys at back of long line

Slow down buddy, take a deep breath, and re-read what you quoted.

In particular the start of the third paragraph:
And if we are drawing enough to warrant it, along with the Thunder and other events that are held there

1. Further to my post#2230 above: the NZ RU significant long term decline in male GR contact player nos.
(This NZ GR decline will have a future negative influence on elite RU -& RL- in Aust. ie deliver less skilled players into Aust. Super & Wallabies', & NRL, squads; & lower crowds/ratings/Rights' $/GR male contact RU nos. in Australia. The decline of RU will accelerate in Aust.- & AF in NSW, ACT, & Qld, will be the main beneficiary).

The NZRU & Sth African RU have signed to continue Super Rugby up to 2026. RA will sign shortly- but Super Rugby is having large falls in average crowds, ratings, & much diminished general interest- with jnrs. & young adults showing least interest.

Zealous Rugby Podcast "What's Happened To Super Rugby (Empty Stadiums)" 29.2.20

"The big problem for me in Australia, the schools and the juniors (RU jnr clubs- my words), the numbers, especially in Sydney, they are just evaporating" (11 seconds - 20 secs. mark).

"In NZ & Australia, participation in rugby has dropped 17% a year since 2011*. 10 years ago in NZ, private schools had 5 open teams (RU players in the final 2 years of secondary school- my words), today they struggle to have even 2".
* This decline is an over-estimate- not sure what, precisely, he is referring to.
(6 mins. 20 secs. - 6 mins.58 secs. mark)

2. WWOS AAP 19.2.20

"NZ Rugby bosses have introduced a weight-restricted national club competition to stop the haemorrhaging of grass root player numbers....It is hoped the addition of the under 85 (kgs) competition will address a concerning drop in participation at club level in recent years. The physicality of rugby has been touted as one reason for the falling numbers...NZ Rugby's desire for lighter adult players to stay with the sport is behind the inaugural National Club Cup".

3. EDIT:

The Roar RU Expert Writer, W. Knight, also examined this NZRU under 85 kgs national comp. policy; & issues re the physicality of RU.

"Within the top grades of club competitions in Sydney & Brisbane, there are few players across the park in all positions that are'nt over the century (ie 100 kgs- my words), or at least close to it".

"Player numbers are also a big concern in Australia...Many parents on the sidelines of weekend club rugby in Sydney still fret about their kid being steamrolled by an opposition weapon who is 20kgs heavier".

New Zealand rugby thread

Tigers have over 100,000 members. Doesn’t seem to effect them.

Besides which it’s well known that once needed there’s a “cheap” option to expand to 35k.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

The MCG capacity is divided ( round numbers): Cricket Club 25k, AFL Members 15k, max for the home club 60k.
60k for 100k members.

And how / why exactly would Sydney promote homophobia?

He isn’t a Sydney fan.

He is a Wanderers fan who created an account and has posted nothing other than Aussie Rules is failing in Sydney and the Giants are failing in Sydney.

Have a look at his history, I did back in our finals run.
Not 1 post that wasn’t bagging the sport or the Giant’s footy club.

He does it to distract himself from the state of the A league.

Ok sounds like a little tiff between the two of you.

Don't know how homophobia is relevant.

I'll see myself out.

He is in every giants related thread so it usually ends up with him ranting and me backhanding.

The homophobia part is the Wanderers and there fans have stuffed up very publicly twice very recently in regards to it.

1. Foxtel NRL 360 B. Ikin et al 9.3.20

P. Kent said

(Re the previous NRL broadcast deal) "John Grant said 'We got $1 billion'...5 years later when the deal expired, there was no money in the bank, no assets, less people playing the game. Where did the billion went (sic)?".
(go to 4 minutes 24 secs - 4 mins 48)

Neither P. Rothfield, nor J. Hooper, nor B.Ikin challenged Kent's comments on the decline in participation etc.
Many NRL officials, & some MSM RL experts etc., however, claim that there are record regd. participants in RL -but they are including non-contact touch/tag etc. participants.
Male contact player nos. are in a significant long term decline.

Kent also said "...the (ARLC) Board is split on whether to retain Greenberg as CEO...the odds are in favour of Todd being moved on".

There seems to be much dissatisfaction, in the NRL itself and with MSM RL experts, regarding the present state of the NRL, & GR RL.
This is despite the latest NRL Rights 2018-2022 deal, worth a record c. $1.8 billion (70% higher than previous deal)- overseen by T. Greenberg!; & the NRL having net profits totalling $75m in y/e 2018 & 2019.

2. 2GB Sydney Radio J. Stanley & P.Kidd 3.11.18

"The NRL has been struggling to attract teenage boys to the sport. Over the last few years, membership (official regd. male contact RL players- my words) has been in decline, with many preferring to play AFL & soccer...the biggest influence has been concerns over player safety. To address this... Rugby League decided to bring in a no contact version of the sport...
It comes after a pilot of weight-based teams, rather than age-based, failed to produce results (ie decline continued- my words & emphases)".

From Audio above, 5minutes 45 secs - 6 mins 45 secs.:
Q." How do you gauge success in this? Is it trialled for a year?

A. NSWRL: We will roll it out next year. Our measure of success...is how many...turn up next year" (ie return to the same game).

3. EDIT:

As the NRL"...fights against dwindling crowd numbers...and dropping participation at grassroots, the game is moving to becoming safer for the players involved...but former Qld. star Ikin believes the changes could be coming too extensive".

There appears to be in RL (as in AF) two divergent camps- some want the game to become as safe as reasonably possible- others want the gladiatorial elements of the game, & heavy clashes (but not to the head) to be a continuing, common feature.
