Adam Cerra vs Archie Perkins. What would you prefer your club to do?

At the time Naughton was a key defender with an iffy kick. They had Pearce, Hamling and had drafted Logue the previous year. Naughton only became a key forward in his second year for the dogs.

He always projected as a forward, I posted on the freo board that they should take him with an eye to play him forward. He won the goal kicking testing and being a physical competitive beast always translates.

Player retention isn't really an issue for WC.

The number of first team players that requested to leave WC are probably smaller than most other AFL clubs. Maybe Judd, Gehrig and Ebert are the biggest of the past 20 years. We've had far more in the past 20 years nominating us.

Talented key position players can usually play at either end. IIRC they did trade for McCarthy in 2016 and that probably formed a big part of why they didn’t go after another key position player, and Cerra was a consensus top 5 choice.

Logue is interesting because he’s kind of the antithesis. Bit of a reach on a local lad when they could have grabbed someone like Simpkin who is a country boy and would’ve probably enjoyed living in WA more than someone like Cerra.

Hindsight is a beautiful thing, but he hadn't actually played forward as a junior.

I’m aware, I watched him a lot that year. I posted it predraft. He always had the attributes and it was on the back of Hooker and McDonald moving forward and kicking 40 each off the back of being aerially competitive

It's a national comp, we can't have a compromised draft, where clubs don't pick the best player because they want to come home. The AFL should set up an academy in Canberra for the best 25 draft year, play vfl so there exposed to living away from home. Maybe it needs to be a medical reason to leave and drop the free agency to 6 years. Also If players want to go home, who aren't free agents should go in a bidding system, where all clubs can bid from that state bid on the player, he puts in his salary requirements.

At the moment every Victorian club is sweating of players drafted interstate, especially the private schoolboys, where it's when not if they'll return. I can't see that pressure is good for their mental health to have that pressure to come home, they never give themselves the chance for that club. Gotta feel for Freo, would have been a great duo with Brayshaw for the next decade, used pick 5. Surely they have to have a high asking price, or cerra risks going into the PSD where he'll end up at north

Non Victorian clubs should look at Vic Country boys, Vic Metro boys have required a reputation for not having appendages that the country balls have ....

A sac.

Why? We don't have issues with player retention like Freo does.

Judd's probably the only highly rated player we've had that's requested a trade back home.

Begs to ask why Neale, Cerra and Weller all wanted to head back east.
I mean West Coast hasn't drafted many high profile vic kids recently. There was Brander but no Vic club is gonna go out of there way to poach him. And Duggan but he is vic country and generally freo don't struggle to retain them.

You're not wrong, but like I said before, Naughton had little to know exposure (in juniors or seniors) in the forward half of the ground before he was drafted. Naughton also was never really a chance at being taken in the top 5, which was where Freo held both their picks.

Logue certainly never convinced me but I can see why a side would want to back in a former high draft pick, combining that with an already strong KPD stock. I just don't think not picking Naughton should be held as a criticism against Freo.

I'm sure you did. But it's also difficult to strongly consider using your high pick on a player who hasn't actually played in the position you are drafting him for. Plus he was never really in the conversation for the top 5 if I remember correctly.

Interesting that fans from the NSW & Qld clubs are so uppity about kids now wanting to leave their state, hypocrisy anyone?

Don’t clubs give draftees psychological assessments for this very reason? So they know something about them & their flight risk? Obviously circumstances can change family etc.

But to answer you question, do you think you should risk drafting a 17 year old that says don’t I don’t want to go there? I think the clubs in the state he wants to go to should think twice, surely you’d be grateful for the opportunity so few get that you’d go anywhere, instead of making demands to the clubs before you even get picked up

Hill was the go home factor from the GF.

Right, either way though you poached him from Hawthorn in the first place so I don’t think that fits the topic of the thread given we’re discussing wasting draft picks on kids that just go home.

Come to think of it Weller doesn’t really match either, that pick allowed you to essentially upgrade pick 13 in 2014 to pick 2 in 2017 which gave you brayshaw so that’s a win for Freo. Neale gave you 135 games and two b and fs from pick 58, while Langdon gave you 68 games from pick 54.

So Cerra is kind of the only guy that fits the narrative of a “wasted” high draft pick from the go home factor. So I wouldn’t say any reason to drastically change your draft strategy.
