True story.

Talking to a 7-11 attendant in Armadale and she was telling me she's had to fill orders for UBER eats for a single 30c Tomato Sauce packet.

Delivery was 7$.

Let that sink in.

Gov took a few pies around to Tim Kelly's place.

Edit TK owns a beautiful property down that way,

The bigger question is where are the elected/nominated leaders in this? Shuey? Gov? Kennedy?

Their absence from the ‘blow-torch’ is very telling.

Kennedy doesn't belong in the Convo.
Shuey has just not been 100% either - I keep thinking of that Port game where he came in and made us look like World Beaters before getting injured again.

Gov definitely needs pressure applied - he should be forced to run laps until he is fit.

Who was the one who said trade Gaff and McGovern last year?

Trade Gaff, Keep the Gov.
But make him get fit or he plays no games.
Worked once, let's see if it works again.

More I think about it Gov needs a slight role change to fire him up. Teams have worked him out and he is struggling to adapt.

Tell him next season he plays a utility role. Forward, 2nd ruck and backup kp defender for rotations. The role Allen has been playing.

IMO Gov would be a brilliant 2nd ruck playing a kick behind reading the play. Getting a sniff at the goals would also lift his intent.

Also means we can play Brander where he should be and Harry gets more games.

I liked Govs game v the Saints. For me it means we can play more well rounded in the future and allow us to play Allen in his position + play Hedwards down back.

Same. We def look better balanced.

Play Brander at chb on the more faster agile tall half forward. Barrass or Harry take the gorilla forward and ruck/Forward.

All three would be faster than Gov.

A change of role for Gov and Brander could be a couple of moves that improves our 'energy' levels.

Add a fit Rioli, Cameron and Ryan forward that adds even more.

I hope we coach Barrass to be that lockdown style of defender like we did we with EMac back in the day. Let Hedwards play as that zone of defender ( which he does well).

Sometimes you just have to accept where a player is at, Gov to me looks like a player who is just trying to keep a pay cheque.
And this where it is going to be hard for Simpson because trying to convince Gov to play a new role in a new plan etc but all coming from the same coach I think can be very difficult to work.
A new coach could easily do it as he brings new hope, new excitement, new messages etc etc. very hard for an established coach to radically change his spots.
Do we give everyone who has been lazy and not accountable a new role? What is so difficult for him to play on his man?

Problems with this suggestion.

We just extended Simpson for two more seasons. Do you think we are going to just turf him out now? No we won't. So suggesting a new coach is simply unrealistic IMO.

Just accept where a player is at? Geez.

As opposed to actually working with them to change something to get them back to contributing at the elite level? This has been done many times before with some very good players with great results.

The move finally gets Brander where he should be playing for the next 10 years. Potentially a massive benefit short and long term.

This move also gets Allen playing the role we hope for the next 10 years. No move switch here and there gett8ng smashed playing 2nd ruck.

That is our two key positions locked in for our next tilt.

EVERYONE is saying the game plan is stale and old. So move some magnets and devise a new plan.

And no we don't change roles for every player. Just the ones that makes the most sense.

this would require dedication, commitment and effort over the preseason, something mud guts hasn’t demonstrated yet

He came back from the covid break last year in good shape / lost kgs.

As another has mentioned Gov is a VC. If he is told he needs to get fitter because of a new / different role then the ball is his court. He is being paid serious coin and THAT brings obligations above others who are paid rookie wages and or match payments.

We sent Gov back to the WAFL to train and get fit once before. That worked out quite well. Time to 'rattle that saber' again IMO. End of season interviews he is told, step up, get fitter and perform. If you come back in average condition and mope your way through preseason you are out of the leadership group and playing WAFL. Don't care how many AA's you have or how much you are paid.

A bit of tough love............and not just for Gov either.

And he's our VC!!! What msg does that send re what it takes to be a WCE 'leader'? Or if he's officially one of our best role models and examples what does that say about leadership across the club?

And to be honest this could be one of the reasons we are where we are. Players getting paid huge dollars and being out trained and performed by less experienced players on much less coin.

On face value, it appears little consequences for any established player. No accountability.

It's not how the 'real world's operates, be that in an office, a trade: mechanic / electrician, truck driver etc...

this is the real problem with our players, you don’t need a sit down meeting and someone to tell you that… you know it yourself, you get some pride, you get out there and hurt yourself all preseason. Must be a woeful culture. Gone are the days of cousins, Judd, Kerr, Braun smashing themselves all preseason. A club devoid of role models and strong work ethic

How is this all playing in the media in Perth? Are they applying the blow-torch?
Honestly couldn't say. Don't read the newspaper, don't watch commercial tv.
My main source of news and info is off BF and Kayo shows which are all Vic based so you would see the same.
Best I saw was on 360 I think showing the west saying time to drop top players.

The year Touk Miller was drafted to Gold Coast I had him on my draft wish list. We could have got him too as he went pick 29. We took Duggan at 11 and Lamb at 32.

He had a question mark over pace but he had a glowing references on work ethic. Mother was an elite athletics champion and he was doing all the extra things to overcome his deficiencies.

These are the qualities we need to draft.

Can you “loose the group” and win them back and win a premiership? I would think not.
The other thing rattling in my brain is we need to bottom out, use the draft, and go another tilt at the flag. Imo this group is cooked, who is the right person to lead us to the spoon? I’d feel bad to get another coach to lead us there then get the boot. Perhaps simmo is the bloke to take us to the bottom of the ladder and secure top end talent to rise again. We do not have the gf at our home ground so we need to be a fair bit better than our opposition on gf day.
I’m not a fan of this group or the midfield, 2018 we over achieved imo. Simpson is a genius to get us into two grand finals but it might be time to bottom out.
Edit- I am a fan of this group, well the forwards abs backs; they have been amazing. It’s the midfield group I am not a fan of. Been a problem post cousins Kerr and judd

From memory, gov put his hand up a couple years ago for ruck duties- he was keen. He’s a proven quality player, and putting him in the ruck right now would hopefully revitalise him.

Ok, after watching Simmo's press conference after the game I think we're all a little head****ed.

Listen to the press conference from the last game: 'Pies game press conference at 50 seconds when he says "run, start running, start defending better But I thought the pies used their brains better than we did as well"

Seriously...

As it happens I have been watching games from the early 2000's recently and my god did those guys work!!

Cousins would go on 100m sprints from wing to wing to present a target for a lead. When he marked the ball he often looked like he was just loose, but he made himself loose through pure hard work. He'd get smashed into the ground with a tackle and he'd be involved in the play 50m away a few seconds later for a handball receive and goal.

Kerr would spoil on the HBF and stream through the middle of the ground and then win a contested ball inside 50 to provide a goal assist to the (less than stellar) forwards.

The only people who come close to this sort of running in the team now are Gaff and Cripps. Cripps with the sprints across the ground and Gaff with his constant movement.

Matt Priddis was a hard worker. Chris Masten was a hard worker. Mark Hutchings is a hard worker. Apparently Ainsworth is a hard worker.

Seems to me some of the main things that have affected the performance of the group:

1. Haven't found a replacement for Jetta - someone with pace, good foot skills and the smarts - whose not afraid to attack off the HBF.
2. The presence of 3-4 talls in the fwd line - often flying against each other. And their sheer numbers mean insufficient smaller forwards who can help stop the ball yo-yoing out of the fwd line.
3. Related to that, the absence of Rioli. And the extreme bad luck of not consistently having Ryan, Venables, Jones, Winder or Cameron - thus having to settle for Langdon and to a lesser extent Petro. At least Langdon has some defensive skills and strong body work, unlike Petro.
4. Again related to point 2, no room for a forward resting ruckman which is hampering Williams development. (Given the adage 'ruckmen take longer to develop' then let's hope NN stays fit for another couple of years given the lack of opportunity going to Williams.)
5. I can see no point in now playing Ah Chee, Hutchings or Vardy. Given their typical lack of output could we do no worse than trying some more of the kids? Plus sometimes it just takes a while for players to prove themselves - but not sure how the constant reshuffling (or playing out of position) of the fringe players helps this.
6. Senior players getting games completely regardless of form - not one, once! Is it in their contracts that they can't dropped? Or do they all have incriminating pics of the MC?
7. And in hindsight I think we lost on the Kelly trade.
8. Lastly, maybe the biggest thing is the game plan - ineffective and/or outdated - but never changing.

Any others?
