How can you not see that we don't have the players?

I do see we don’t have the players to be a top 8 team . We have the players to be competitive though and we are not competitive.
I don’t even care that we finish last, the players are not putting in for the coach. It’s clear as day.

Do you have any idea how football clubs work? No football decision is made in a football club without the coach signing off on it. The head coach is the king of the club, he is the alpha male at a footy club.

You are correct a new coach will not provide any success but he will get on with the changes . He will put in new non negotiables.
While Simmo stays nothing will change at all.
How can you not see this.
Scary isn't it?

We need to be bad, but not too bad. Gotta get the number one pick in the draft, but have ti keep our percentage within like 0.01% of Norf.

heck coaching is hard.

The list is in an awful spot young talent wise but the coach would have been in the discussion, if not quite happy to continue down the path, of focusing on the now at the expense of the future, both in terms of drafting and blooding.

We’re in such a shit spot right now I think it’s hard to say “it’s the list” or “it’s the coach” or “it’s the board” when it’s probably at least partially all three.

I agree that you don’t want to just get on the coaching carousel for fun - if your aim is to sign someone who will be a bit better then you’re doing it wrong. Your aim should be to sign the next premiership coach.

That said, it’s pretty easy to understand why people want heads to roll on the heels of another 100+/60+ point margin in this streak, plus seven home losses in a row (equal worst).

I largely agree with what you’re saying but considering people wanted the coach sacked during the year we won the flag (yes, look it up, particularly the night of the Bombers game), it’s more than fair to expect there’s noise around his position on the heels of an all time AFL/VFL historically bad run.

I also think playing some of the new kids out of their positions when they've barely had 5 games and playing funny buggers is probably not a smart idea. I used to get pissed at my coach when I was moved down back from roving and I didn't perform well or have any love towards the coach.

It's a sign of failing coaches, it happens in rugby union too.

I'm curious, do other coaches allow their players to turn into BBWs and expect them to perform?
I know it's a S&C thing but, does the coach get a say?

Yes, I'm fat shaming.
Of course the coach has a say. He's the big dog whose responsible for results. He would have noticed an issue in this area and it's up to him to make sure the S+C team are doing their job. But I bet it was something he was doing that allowed it to get like that. i.e. possibly overruling the S+C and taking the players' side over fitness levels.

$$$ in the bank perhaps?

Million dollar question right there. One man cannot do this alone.
I agree that this is far from Simpson's fault alone. However; his message is clearly not getting through any more.

We're at historic levels of shit right now and he's been at the club for 8 years. I think he's run his race, unfortunately.

He's done very well up until this point. But this drop off has been 3 years in the making and he's been asleep at the wheel. We need a fresh perspective.

Will a new coach magically fix us? Almost certainly not, at least not immediately. But it will be a start.

A question for the thread.

Do people think a new coach would make us good?

Making the distinction between good and ‘more competitive’, cause it would be very hard to be less competitive.

I think a new coach would make us more competitive this seaosn for whatever that’s worth to us. I’m almost entirely locked in on getting pick one now so kinda don’t want to lose that, but there is so much merit in breaking this rut and being competitive, regular levels of bad, not generationally bad.

Whether or not a new coach could make us ‘good’ next year I don’t know. More competitive absolutely. Would be borderline impossible, even just for a new voice and a reset of focus, not to. Not sure I’m sold on making us ‘good’ though.

We’re hardly in a one year project though, so really it’s just a thought experiment more than anything.

Good post.
This is the collapse we had to have. It will drive change in the club and questions will need to be asked and answered.
This is all part of becoming a club with history and lineage.
It is important to suffer as it builds resilience and character. The club will be better for it in ten years time.
We are still babies in the AFL/VFL chapter.

And who was one of the primary people responsible for breaking it?

He needs to go due to his part in woefully overrating our list in the last two seasons. Also the message has been lost on the players since mid last year. His reluctance to change and have a plan B also. Finally since the Premiership in 2018 despite our pretty good list from 19-21. We won one final.

NO

A new coach however will wipe the slate clean and put in a whole new world of non negotiables.
Players will know effective immediately they are playing for their career.
You would be surprised what can be achieved in a short time frame without climbing the ladder .
