Good post.
This is the collapse we had to have. It will drive change in the club and questions will need to be asked and answered.
This is all part of becoming a club with history and lineage.
It is important to suffer as it builds resilience and character. The club will be better for it in ten years time.
We are still babies in the AFL/VFL chapter.
To be honest I’m more interested in seeing change at a board/exec level than in the game day dept, although those would hardly be unfair either.

Too many lifers, it is just so unrealistic that people keep their jobs for 30+ years in a landscape like professional sport or high level business execs. We’ve been so successful that they’ve always had something to point at, but man would I love to get some modernised forward thinking staff into the club, who haven’t worked there since 1986.

We're the worst side in the last 120 years of VFL/AFL right now. Simmo's got quite a legacy to be looking down the barrel of, this team is weak as wet toilet paper.

Even more worrying is what the future holds with barely any quality youth in the closet.

How can WCE still be maintaining the status quo with their up the line management in the face of this?

The board has no standards and/or backbone. Even worse than that of the coach with his over the hill pet players.

"We're the worst side in the last 120 years of VFL/AFL right now" is that actually based on data? Just wanna know where it came from is all.

Reading that fkkn hurts.

A question for the thread.

Do people think a new coach would make us good?

Nope, but we've hit rock bottom (hopefully!) and need to start a new chapter. I still think we've got enough talent to make a sneaky run at the top 4 in a couple of years if we draft the right young midfielders, but we need to draw a line in the sand right now and reset. Something is badly wrong with our culture right now, and while it's not all Simmo's fault, the buck's gotta stop somewhere.

Making the distinction between good and ‘more competitive’, cause it would be very hard to be less competitive.

I think a new coach would make us more competitive this seaosn for whatever that’s worth to us. I’m almost entirely locked in on getting pick one now so kinda don’t want to lose that, but there is so much merit in breaking this rut and being competitive, regular levels of bad, not generationally bad.

Whether or not a new coach could make us ‘good’ next year I don’t know. More competitive absolutely. Would be borderline impossible, even just for a new voice and a reset of focus, not to. Not sure I’m sold on making us ‘good’ though.

We’re hardly in a one year project though, so really it’s just a thought experiment more than anything.

It'd give people hope. Given where we are, that'd be huge for us now albeit fluffy and symbolic. The hole is so deep and dark, there's no light to be seen.

People are tired of the same merry-go-round results and spiel by Simpson. I think they want a release - at least with Simpson gone, there might be someone else to blame if the results aren't there in future (but of course it could be the new coach).

For me, I'll take a coach who doesn't throw out the word synergy, can give people a serve and bring at least the CORE BASICS of AFL up to scratch.

If it’s not directly a reference to that it might as well be.

I think that excuse is wearing thin. Gonna be some real pressure on post bye to get a few wins because I am not sure how much of this shit the fan base can take.

TBH sack him for saying “more healthier”.

Reality is we've been this bad for a while, it's just there's been "excuses" papering over the cracks. The place is stale, the players have checked out and change is needed.

Said before, but the likelihood that a coach whose been there nearly 10 years and whose led us to being in the worst state we have ever been as a club, is going to be the guy that coaches our next flag is close to zero. Would have to defy history.

It's just a matter of getting the timing right as to when the axe drops.

We're tracking worse than Fitzroy in 1996, who were recognised by MARS stats data as being the worst side in VFL/AFL history (by my recollection).

More than happy to be proven wrong though.

I do see we don’t have the players to be a top 8 team . We have the players to be competitive though and we are not competitive.
I don’t even care that we finish last, the players are not putting in for the coach. It’s clear as day.

You get it, lots of others here get it too, however there will always be those who accept the bullshit thats been spun to them.
I agree with you, we are by no means a top 8 team, but even with the players out we shouldn't be a bottom of the table side that gets flogged by a hundred points every week.

This team that cant halt run ons and the run ons isn't just a 2022 things, they have been a sorry chink in out teams play for two and a half seasons.

Novel Idea.

What about we just concentrate on providing a contest man on man, that stops a run on.
Or better still do it for the whole game, stop the rot, scratch and claw at every contest every passage of play.

It's what they call controlling the way the games played, controlling the tempo, even bog average players are capable of being able to simply focus on closing down their opponent and making every minute of the game as hard as they can for their immediate opponent.

Sure we probably wont win many games with that game plan, but it will stop the 100 point floggings and reduce the severity of the confidence sapping, demoralising steamrolling's, that the young chargers are currently enduring.

It's called dragging the opposition down to your level.
It wont be pretty but it will reduce the severity of the loss.

You have coached I am sure you have both implemented it and had it done to your teams too.
It's simple and yet its also effective in closing games down and making it a slugfest.

It's a tactic thats been around since cocky was an egg, yet I have never once seen Simpson action it.
Occasionally you might get one player who plays a shut down roll, but other than that ..... it's been a non entity under his coaching tenure.

Simpson is one bloody minded, pig headed SOB and it may well be the character flaw thats the end of him at West Coast.

And before the apologists come to his rescue.

I am not suggesting that the perfect storm thats been endured this season isn't a factor, however I am saying that by not changing our defensive strategies, it is a big factor in why we are being smashed.

Because right now, I will gladly accept an honourable loss, but these insipid, lay down sally efforts just don't cut it for me.

If we don't like whats happening on game day .............. make some fu(king changes, perhaps another novel idea.

Need to lose by 100 two more times and lose every game from now on. Well on the way though. Freo did only win 2 games in 2001 but they never got smashed by over 100 in that year as we have.

I think Simmo is a problem but not our biggest problem. Having only 20-something players to choose from each week would be bloody difficult. It doesn't justify credits in the bank or playing players out of position but it would certainly impact the gameplan as you're relying on players with less skill to execute a plan to the same standard as a fully fit side.

The biggest issue right now has to be the medical team. Injuries happen but we've had an horrific run this year dating back to preseason. Beyond that, Trevor Nisbett and his staff are responsible for setting the direction of the club and resource allocation. We can turn over coaches and players but if they don't have the right support they won't develop properly, individually or as a team.

Simmo is not without fault and losing by 100 points each week isn't fun but I'd rather see a top-down approach than simply blaming things on the coach.

It just seems to be something an AFL coach won’t do. Lock it down
We have all done as you said and it can be Dam right ugly but it can be competitive and sometimes that’s all you need to be as you develop.

Who cares what it looks like, as you know a coach hates big losses and you must find a way to stop them. You need to sell the new buy in the players and lock it down.

Couldn’t agree more with your post.
