The worst thing he did as a coach was win a flag..

Righto.
Funny part is I actually think there’s some truth in this, but not at all in the way old mate is suggesting.

2018 preseason we were the worst team in football and it was a travesty we hadn’t already sacked Simmo. We were too old and too slow, bloke can’t get out of his own way picking the favourite sons and not making the tough calls, cause he’s soft. Some posters on here barracked for us to miss 2017 finals because it might be good for the club to speed up the process of gutting it all and starting again, such was our dire outlook.

And then 2018 we win the flag, now the list is one of the true A-Grade elite of the league, it’s embarrassing Simmo hasn’t gotten more from them to this point etc etc. Outhouse to penthouse in one season, all thanks to Mitchell and a phenomenal playing list that we’d been wasting all along.

Couldn’t coach before we won the flag. Won the flag. Can’t coach cause we haven’t done more prior/since.

For the record, March 10, pre season etc: this should be Simmo’s last season barring a hugely unforeseen improvement. I don’t think it will be because of his contract situation, but if it were solely up to me it would be. I was in this spot last year, prior to the availability ****ery that took place, so this year definitely should be. If there’s no big jump, cop the payout (they won’t) and move on.

But my god is it such a can’t win position. Team is shit? You’re shit.

Team is good? Talented list, good assistants, a better coach would have won more.

What a gig.

I too forgot about this extra magical year he found with his contract :sadv1:

Rules out any potential sacking in 2023 completely, regardless of how the team performs. He's got until mid 2024 at the earliest now before he'd feel any heat IMO.

Paying out 1 year on a contract is fine, but paying out 2 years isn't happening.

Depends a little on what the contract says about termination. Could have a 12-month notice clause for all we know.

I definitely could see a departure this year if there is no real/genuine improvement. Despite the conservative nature of the club, they won’t sit on their hands, if it came to it they’ll cop the financial hit.

I’m still recovering from what has been posted in this thread recently tbh. It is a… different world some inhabit 🤣

I don't think they can though. Here is how I think it works (happy to be corrected):
-the soft cap is $10M
-Simmo is on at least $800k pa
-to pay him out would see us cop $1.6m hit next year.
-Luxury tax is 100% of what exceeds the cap.

So not only do we have to pay $1.6M over the cap, we then pay another $1.6M tax - so $3.2M just to get rid of a coach. I can't see the board or WAFC approving that.

A new coach might only be on $500k so maybe we save $300k payout for next year and another $300k tax. Means we still pay $2.6M

Simpson is in an uncomfortable spot. A lot of people talk of high picks for the next two drafts, but I'm not sure people would be happy if Simpson was coach when we were finishing low enough to get good picks?

If we had pick 1 this year we could get a generational talent apparently, or auction the pick to vic clubs. But we finish last and Simpson's future would seem already written.

We certainly won't be finishing last.

If a low finish was achieved because of embracing a full hard rebuild, i.e. prioritising youth, then i would accept it providing that the losses result from being beaten by experience, higher physical maturity of the opposition and class and not beaten purely on effort. You can't blame the coach for a lowly finish if you are putting teams on the park with an average of 70 games experience per player (as opposed to a a league average of say 110 games and and the top 4 sides generally averaging 130 plus). But if he puts an old team on the park and still finished bottom 4, or if the team is being beaten for effort every week, then he deserves to get bagged.

I think he could survive another couple of seasons of bottom 4 finishes if the club helped him out by moderating supporter expectations and selling supporters on being interested in coming to see the rebuild in progress rather than coming along expecting a top 8 finish. But that is not what they have been doing. I think they have hung him out to dry. I also think that Simpson could help himself in the PR realm by being less aloof, not coming across as disinterested and being above it all, using fewer cliches in his answers and speaking more directly and trying to sell the progress in the job he is doing to supporters.

Article on Simpson having a tough job ahead. Has quotes from Duggan. I noticed he said the differences to last year will be availability of players and "subtle changes to the game plan". Could just be a throwaway line or an inaccurate choice of words, but on the face of it that statement and the use of the word "subtle" suggests that there is not some totally new game plan being planned to be unveiled in round 1 as some posters expect..

100% this… if we are playing the young guys in spots that they should be playing in with a view to the future in say 3 years then he can stay.

If at the first bounce we have Kelly, Shuey, Yeo and gaff all in the middle and across the centre then he can get in the bin…

If we see effort for 4 quarters rather than having the pants pulled down and being done over by half time then that’s fine…

Even seeing us play man on man so opponents have to at least beat someone to the ball would be an improvement…

And just on looks if I see him guzzling coffees in the box again… no other coach does it but it goes to attitude and looking as if you give a hoot.

Hopefully there’s a real focus on the new kids in town.

Well we are all looking forward to No More Cloudy Days, however if we have too many 100 points hiding and Simpson at the post match presser is asked to explain the blow outs and his reply is, I Cant Tell You Why then, you would think that by next season he will be Already Gone.

If he only plays the seniors on the list at the expense of the kids then its obvious that his actions are nothing more than The Last Resort of a Desperado.

Another "two win only" season and it's really will have been Wasted Time.

What a Sad Cafe it will be at MRP as the Board see membership number fall After The Thrill Has Gone for the supporters with repeat trash seasons.

Apologies ............ I will show myself out.
