With the injury list as long as it is and the side as depleted as it is I don't really understand the crushing pressure Simmo would be having on himself. It should be freeing, if anything. You know you're going to get pantsed most weeks, so try something different, try players in roles you always thought about but held off on trying.

If Simmo wants to step away from the club at the end of the season then I can completely understand that. If he wants to do a Clarko and step away right now for a break then I wouldn't really mind cos like I said we're gonna be getting pumped every week anyway.

Getting Simmo or Nisbett out now doesn't make McGovern, Naitanui, Yeo, Shuey all available for next week.

Makes Malthouses late 90s coaching drop off look remarkably good.

To be honest if we has made finals in 19, 20, 21 and 22 but knocked out in 1st/2nd week we'd be complaining about that.

It's flags or nothing in this caper.

I've always felt like anything other than a Prelim is a meh year.

And I agree with your sentiment which shows us how spoilt we as Eagles supporters are.

I was 100% thinking this (while bored at work) last night.

I started following the Eagles in 91 and my first 4 years as a fan was 3 GFs and 2 flags and ever since you are trying to get that feeling.

That's why (to me) the greatest challenge for WCE (and WA sides in general) is sustained success.

Not just 1 and done.

But deffo been spoilt as a fan.

Simpsons coaching record of 117 wins v 95 losses has him likely going into the red by the end of next year. Its an appalling record given he had ten years coaching the best forwardline WCE has ever had, a once in a generation CHB, powerhouse ruckman, AA players all over the ground and the biggest home ground advantage in AFL. That flag covers a lot of sins.

Ne never addressed our midfield failings, never addressed our issues clearing CHB and his overall legacy was to change us from a club that valued contested footy to one that doesn't know how to anymore. You can bet your arse he was in the ear of the list managers as well, overestimating the list and driving the "flag window" top up strategy over hitting the draft as early and as often as possible. Another significant departure from WCE of old. Also the offield staff, his assistants and S&C - does anyone think they are onboarded without the ok of the senior coach?

The longer he stays the harder it will be to regain the high performance culture we have lost.

Simpson was known to be - at least in the Rawlings era a large part of list managment. So I think this is fair.

Win percentage is a bit of a timing thing though. Take the last three years out and Simpson is one of the GOATs.

Unless you're Geelong which has by far the strongest home ground/state advantage and list management advantages (esp. now). Then you can install any half competent coach and sit at 60+.

You could say the same of pretty much every Premiership era we've had.

For example, we had one of the greatest midfields ever, with Judd, Cousins and Kerr and Cox as a ruckman, but only managed a single premiership with that much talent. And while Malthouse managed two premierships, there's a pretty common view that we could/should have snagged more.

Scapegoat Simpson, what a pathetically run club we are. Don’t blame him now if he just leaves, he has been badly let down from multiple angles.

I don't understand the logic of media pundits like Duffield saying on the one hand we are in the midst of a full rebuild and the future/youth should be prioritised and we might not make finals for several years from here. But then they say we should give Simpson one more year after this and if we are still in the bottom third of the ladder next year then he should go. You can't ask somebody to rebuild a list but then hold them responsible when you don't make the 8.

Im happy for Simmo to stay as coach , what we should be doing is pay out all the contracts for the players over 29 & start a fresh. Lets start getting ruthless with players after 28 no more long term contracts.
I'd be happy if nisbett and simpson stayed as long as this occurs. All 30 year olds cut immediately at seasons end. I don't care what your name is.

So without scrolling through the entire thread, if Simpson was to go then who are the top 5 or so frontrunners to take over?

Hardwick (although he has said he left the tigers because he is exhausted so probably not ready to go for a little while)

Dean Cox?

Clarkson? Wouldn't assume he would walk away from north given the situation.

Don Pike? Is he still coaching somewhere after his senior stint at Adelaide?

Who else is out there that would contemplate moving west?

fyi Pyke is an assistant at Sydney I believe (as is Cox)

Development coach Jacob Brennan can do Simmo's presser tomorrow for him, all good.

Just like Roy in that Ted Lasso episode.

Surely you jest?
The coach is the King of the club, numero uno! It is why he is remunerated so much. It is his responsibility as much as any person or department in the club.
Have other departments not done well? Of course, that is clear but ultimately the senior coach is responsible for everything football.
When we won the flag we didn't praise our medical staff, our list managers, etc. We gave Adam his due credit for being the senior coach.
It has now gone shit, so he has to wear that now.

You're describing Tim Gepp.
