Wouldn’t hurt for the chairman to come out and say they will be conducting a review once the season is over and that any decision on Simpson’s future won’t be made until then

That’s not controversial as it’s likely the truth and there’s no point saying he has the full support of the board because that won’t be believed even if it is true

At least it would remove the speculation prior to the Adelaide game when the focus should be on our retiring greats

Then announce the decision to keep him as coach or not post season when a frank and honest assessment has been completed

It won't make a difference. There's more clicks in the ongoing coach drama, so the media will continue to flog it regardless of what the club puts out.

Maybe they are the back and to busy sharpening their knives?

Fitzpatrick could come out and declare Simmo will be coach for life and the West will still report he is 'under pressure' after our next loss

I’ve no issue with people who think Simpson should be moved on but I really do hope he gets to stay and at least see the team trending upwards over the next 2 years (and beyond)

Whatever happens though he’s retained his dignity and has given his all to the club. Handled himself very well in todays press conference I thought. Link below

Not the main thrust of the interview but I thought he made an interesting comment when asked about Oscar Allen.

When he was asked about his shoulder he said “we need to teach him how to land”.

Found this interesting because a number of the impact injuries are players doing ridiculous things and not protecting themselves. Two examples that stand out are Ryan and Barrass jumping over packs and sustaining serious injuries.

Good to hear they are starting to look at this stuff.

He's a silent partner, just collects profits.

Laughable to think he has any input in the business, just let's his accountant do the numbers.

No different to having an investment property with a rental manager, or a share portfolio with a portfolio manager.

He’s been on good money for some time, gotta do something with it.

Should have bought an emu farm.

I am chuckling with that prick in Melbourne called Barrett. He goes on the record each time saying he does not like the way coaches are treated. As a hypocrite that he is, he has led the calls for Dew and Simpson to be let go.

There are times when I would dearly to whack some sense into him - just 2 minutes would be enough.

I think they may have already made the decision but are trying to get a concession from the AFL about the soft cap tax before announcing it.

Eddie would be absolutely licking his lips at the chance to spout some crap on TV about West Coast after we beat them in 2018.

He is an absolute knob
Not only Eddie, the whole football world want to give us a kicking.
So much so they are lining up . Lots of long memories out there.

Yeah, nah. That's not really Eddie's things.

He didn't say anything at all to pot the club, he was backing them in if anything
As he has been the whole way through.

Goood afternoooon lads. I am still firmly in the keep Simmo camp and let it naturally end 2025.

But I also wanted to understand the inner-works of an AFL club generally.

How much is the total soft cap budget per year?

How much are the assistants typically on?

And how much is the development coaches on?

The reason I ask, if simmo is paid out two million and taxed on top of the soft cap.

And the club will need to hire another senior coach, and other assistants/development coaches. I could guesstimate that it would cut the yearly budget in half for two years.

I’d also assume with the recent retirements (Hurn n co) the transitioning of the list to be 40-ish% under 22, wouldn’t we need more development/assistants?

Otherwise, we’d be two/3years behind any sustained improvement. I don’t know if this legitimate risk, something footy operations should not take lightly. Thoughts?

Can I add, with the significant issue of travel and it's effect upon injury and recovery, why are WCE and Freo not given concessions towards fitness and conditioning staff in the soft cap?

Is it worth arguing for?

Yes it makes complete sense but it probably isn't worth arguing for because the VFL wouldn't have a bar of it

Maybe if we do what we did this year for another couple and Freo actually backs us in something but can't see it

It absolutely makes sense. I’m sure there is evidence about how travel affects all manner of health issues (including mental health). The most obvious would be recovery. But it’s essentially FIFO four-five days a fortnight.
And probably in 20 years people will wonder how on earth the players coped. And marvel at their level of performance.
I am really surprised how the non-Vics don’t unite more to stick it to the VFL. And especially the two WA teams.
Tim Lane (who I normally rate) previously said the large number of cups the non-Vics had won proved travel, MCG finals etc was not a disadvantage. Of course that conveniently ignored the possibility we’d have won even more with a more equal system.

Yep, just a passing thought, not a biggie, answered it myself really...but it may infer partially how deeply invested he is in Perth and hence his long club tenure and reluctance to let go. Either way something's gotta give and it looks like sooner than later. I'm ok if he sticks around a bit longer, a new coach will have the same problems in the short term. It's just when they will transition to a new coach, at what stage of the rebuild.
The offseason obviously is the best time for a new coach to settle in before preseason starts.
If it's to be a major shake up of admin+coaches, it has to be the offseason with revolving doors beginning not long after the last match you'd think?
