Just wondering which of these Simpson can get any credit for and which are simply good players that’d be good players anywhere:
  • Oscar Allen - nearly 50 goals in a shithouse team
  • Liam Ryan - gone from a stay at home forward when drafted to a weapon up the ground
  • Bailey Williams - the surprise packet of 2023
  • Tom Cole - picked in the 30s, a vastly underrated presence in the backline
  • Brady Hough - also picked in the 30s, in his second season and plays like a veteran already.

I’m guessing they’re all just naturally gifted and no development was required.

Not a single coach worth a pinch of salt would sign that deal, or even anything close to approaching a backended deal like that.

At best you might get a coach who would agree to something like 600K/600K/700K/800K/800K.

Jon Ralph said we've enquired with AFL about payout structure options for Simmos contract and possible tax relief, spreading it over several years etc.

Simmos contract extension was essentially a mechanism for us to make him whole after he took significant Covid paycuts to keep as many support staff around as possible. The AFL are of the opinion that they won't be waiving the tax as that would be allowing us to circumvent the restrictions they put in place during Covid, in a roundabout way.

You try and make it sound so personal, it's just a football club to me. It's a business and I don't believe he is the right bloke to take us forward from here.
I don't hate Simmo, couldn't be further from the truth. Just don't think he should be retained as coach.

It seems such an issue for some of you this?
Herein lies your problem GWS. You are dealing with people who are passionate about and love the club.
You might need to understand their, and mine, passion for the club.

Not a problem for me at all, it’s great you are so passionate about the club. I am not passionate about footy much at all anymore.
I hate what the suits have done to the sport and my passion for everything to do with it has dropped right off. The Eagles and West Perth are the only hands I watch these days.

It’s a lot of words to essentially say, quite correctly, Simpson’s fate should be determined by whether or not he’s the best person to guide the rebuild/development and if the question was even being asked if there was no payout

Article also states Nisbett was part of this morning’s meeting via Zoom

Adam Simpson’s future at West Coast Eagles will come down to how the board approaches the following four questions.
Question one: Can a coach be sacked after a spirited showing against the Western Bulldogs produced a late season win against the odds – especially with senior players speaking passionately in support of Simpson after the win?

Question two: Can a coach be retained after two-and-a-half dire seasons which, inclusive of Sunday’s win, have produced just seven wins in 53 games with five losses by more than 100 points and 15 losses by 40 points or more this season alone?

Question three: If Simpson did not have two years of a contract to run, would the club be looking to retain him?

Question four: Is Simpson the best available coach to train, grow and develop what will be, after this year’s draft and trade period, one of the youngest lists in the competition?

Questions one and two are the two that hold the public’s attention at the moment because they cut to credit and blame. Simpson deserves part of the credit for a remarkable win against the Bulldogs, but how much of the blame should he have for the woeful seasons the Eagles have endured in 2022 and 2023 after losing seven of their last nine games to miss finals in 2021?

But questions three and four are the ones that hold the key to the Eagles’ board getting the decision right when it passes judgement on Simpson.

These questions cut to what lies in front of, not behind, the Eagles.

Are there better available alternatives? And would the club be looking for alternatives if it were not for a likely payout of at least $2.5 million to terminate Simpson’s contract with two years left to run?

Members of West Coast’s board met at chairman Paul Fitzpatrick’s house on Monday morning for what was later described in a club statement as an “informal discussion”.

“The club remains firm on its position that no decisions have been made around the future of any staff members and that none of those key decisions will be made until after the season,” the statement said.

“Our club is focused on celebrating the careers of three champions – Shannon Hurn, Luke Shuey and Nic Naitanui – at our final match of the season against Adelaide at Optus Stadium on Saturday night.”

Board members Rowan Jones, Elizabeth Gaines, Nicole Moody, Justin Langer and Ben Wyatt visited Fitzpatrick’s western suburbs residence for the meeting and the club’s chief operating officer Richard Godfrey was also present.

Chief executive Trevor Nisbett, also on the board, was not present but is understood to have taken part in the meeting via Zoom.

It is understood that the meeting was never intended – either before or after the Bulldogs game – to be a passing of final judgement on Simpson. But it is also believed, as part of the board’s due diligence on Simpson’s future, that they are looking at the logistics of the departure and what alternatives are out there as his successor should Simpson be given his marching orders.

The feeling among West Coast insiders last week was that Simpson, at the helm since taking over from John Worsfold in 2014, was in serious trouble. The club’s official position had shifted from the fact that he had a contract to his future being a matter for discussion.

That shift came in the wake of the 101-point derby loss to Fremantle, the Eagles’ cross town rival, which was the fifth triple-figure loss West Coast had suffered this season.

Simpson’s detractors have pointed to the two years of non performance – albeit hampered by Covid and injury in 2022 and injury this year. Simpson supporters have pointed to the strong performance against the Dogs as evidence that the coach is still the man the players, especially the senior players, want.

But neither the detractors or supporters are using evidence from the future.

It will be the board’s capacity to make the right call going forward that holds the key to getting this right – with or without Simpson, with or without a payout.

Positive feedback for Simpson , from the meeting evidently . The weight of support from players , members and fans are in Simpson's favour and the lack / cost of replacement coaches makes it feel to me its not all bad for Simmo .

I wrote an email to WC and they did reply. The main line of wording was
"We maintain confidence in Adams ability to lead our team forward".
I guess we will see.

You are not passionate because of people in suits , but if you were in a suit on
the board you would sack . The passionate supporters think Simmo can develop , can coach , he can deal with the negative press and non passionate people . He still has 2 years on big coin that he deserves . There is no reason to trade in a Toyota to possibly end up with a great wall .

The fans and supporters are more worried about the huge payout than actually keeping him as the coach.
Remove the payout issue and the overwhelming thought would be the coach has to go. Not sure why the money means so much to the members and fans but it seems it does.

I have never said that, others have. In fact I gave Simmo plenty of credit when we won. I also think he is a good coach and will coach successful at another club.
It's a shame you are being piled on and having to pretend the truth of what you are saying isn't true. Simpson is a poor development coach and his game plan got found out years ago. Good bloke and loyal to a fault. Pyke and Mitchell critical to 2015 and 18.

What is your evidence that he is a poor development coach?

IMO the three questions to guide decision making are:

  1. What are the steps along the path the club needs to take to reach its next premiership?
  2. Can the club afford the financial hit if they were to sack Simmo? If they sacked him, how does the resulting penalty affect the steps stated in 1, above?
  3. Is Simmo the best person to guide the rebuild/development in accordance with what was identifed at Step 1 above?

Everything else is just noise. The unlikely win yesterday. The 100 point thumpings this year. The 40+ point thumpings. All fine if we are progressing along what we've identified as our strategy to reach our next premiership quicker.
