AFLW 2024 - Round 9 - Indigenous Round - Chat, game threads, injury lists, team lineups and more.
Being one of the biggest clubs in the AFL, AFL house were never going to fold Essendon like so many wished for. Mistakes were made, punishements were handed out and everybody move on. Could be worse and we actually picked the best player in the draft.True, and I do. It was a complete farce.
By still allowing the number 1 pick to be handed over after the inevitable drop in performance from 10 players getting sat out, the AFL gave a complete FU to the body whose policies they claim to uphold.
Take note campaigners, King of Trade Week in action. You HAVE seen this morning’s headlines about the requested Port players yes?
Hooker, Ryder, Hibberd.... they are gone or almost gone.Tippa? Hooker (pick 57), there is this kid called Zac Merrett who went at pick 26. May have heard of him?
Hibberd, Ryder as others.
Youre writing off Merrett because he is 25? Ive seen it all on bigfooty nowRyder,
Hooker, Ryder, Hibberd.... they are gone or almost gone.
Zac Merrett is 25, Tippa is 27 and not exactly a star.
Who are your young stars coming through besides Ridley.
Wasn't he scraped of the bottom of the barrel when Essendon needed "replacements"?Tippa?
McGrath has been a good pick obviously, but he was the number one draft pick, hardly astute. Widely touted as the no.1 before the draft. So using him as an example was not a knock on McGrath, but not a good example to use when touting astute drafting choices.
Who besides Ridley, who was a first round pick after all, looks like being a star or just below that. That is how to measure draft success.
Who is writing off anyone. I asked who is coming in not established players. Not hard to understand.Youre writing off Merrett because he is 25? Ive seen it all on bigfooty now
I haven't criticised the McGrath pick at all. I said it was not a good example to use for drafting successes because he was such an obvious pic.So wait... you criticise the McGrath pick, then in the same breath, say he was widely touted as the No.1 pre-draft. You're criticising Dodoro for literally picking the kid who many had ranked as the number 1 selection, at 1... who has then been one of the outstanding performers in his draft class? Bizarre
Ridley was a second round selection.
Merrett was a second round selection.
Dodoro has made plenty of drafting blunders, why people seem to try to paint McGrath as one of them is beyond me. The expectations people put on the kid for a pass mark are ridiculous, when by any measure, he's tracking just fine. I get the sense that unless the guy ends up with a better career than Gary Ablett Jnr people will continue to criticise the selection.
If you actually sat down and looked through the draft selections Dodoro has made, he sits around average compared to other recruiters. Not great. Not woeful.

You've named 2 other players who are successful pics, hardly a number to write home about.
Some teams have that number and more from the one draft.
Well something is stopping Essendon going forward, so it may be recruiting or player development. And of course it is not all down to on bloke, recruitment is a team thing, so in that respect you are right when you say Dorodo is an easy target. You asked who looked like being a star, not just whether someone was a successful draft pick, based on where they were selected.
Matt Guelfiwas taken at Pick 76, where players average 40 games for their whole career. He's 23 and has already played 32 games. So on that path he's looking to be a better than average selection at Pick 76. But not a star.PLAYERCARDSTART35Matt Guelfi

Like if we really want to go down the path of evaluating selections draft-by-draft you'll find that Dodoro is basically average at his job. He hits some, misses others, like most recruiters do.
People are very quick to criticise Dodoro based on clickbait media articles not really based in fact, when there's plenty of actual legitimate reasons for him to be moved on

I've seen people pull that shit on Gumtree only to be sent to the wrong address posted on B.AExactly. You don't go into a car dealership and offer them 15% of what the car is worth and then think you are some kind of master negotiator, but that is the sort of thing Dodoro would do. Haggling is fine, but it has to be within reason.
Well you had nick hindOur player development has definitely been poor for a while, along with our strength & conditioning. We've taken steps to turn over the S&C side of the organisation, and brought in a highly rated and experienced assistant in Caracella. No idea regarding the player development arrangement as yet though.
Geelong seem to be able to pluck a quality player out of their VFL side every year or two for example, which is massive given they usually come as late selections.
Well you had nick hindin your vfl team for three years right under your noses but dodoro is only interested in the high profile media grabbing type moves !PLAYERCARDSTART19Nick Hind

Because he's a flogEh if people want to have a go at him, at least put the effort in to be informed.
There’s more than enough to have a go at Dodoro about without people foaming at the mouth over media click bait and making things up.
He’s a go to for the AFL news types during this time of year to make up things about, no other recruiter gets close to the amount of interest a Dodoro story does.
Because he's a flog
Of course Kochie is a flog but he's not on list management m8, far out Dodoro is off his **** with demands and a major reason why Essendon have sucked for heckin'g ages.Maybe, maybe not. I’ve never met the bloke, have you?
If Dodoro is a flog then Kochie is many, many times worse.
