Is it just me, or has AFC had a completely shit development culture over the past 10-15 years.

There are two complementary but diametrically opposite themes that have seemed to persist for at least the last 10 years:
1. An entitled senior player culture (eg Laird, Brodie Smith)
2. Gaslighting of developing players

Focussing on #2, does any other club have the recent history of shitting all over its developing players confidence as much as AFC? A few examples:
  • The rumoured dropping of Rash tomorrow
  • Curtin sub the first 4 games he plays (4 minutes playing time in one of those games). Also playing him full back in the SANFL on gorillas - ****ing dumb
  • Nank, Woz and Dude waiting waaaay too long for a debut. Dowling has a claim to be in this list too
  • Fog spending a year in defence in the SANFL!!! Wtf
  • Continued selection of the underperforming Murphy: 16 games this year, 10 times with 2 or fewer possessions in Q4. This one is an example of both themes - Murphy a senior entitled player just keeps getting a free pass, developing players have to clear a much higher hurdle for continued selection
  • the Drugs Are Bad Mackay? yo-yo youth selection policy

I’m sure this is just the tip of the iceberg for examples.

Others?

Its not just you. For a coach to be about development, Nicks has been awfully bad at it.

Great club isn't it?

Just on Fog's development, if it wasn't for Rahilly coming to the club and teaching him how to play as a forward he most probably would have been delisted.

Our development is a joke.

The diabolical way we've coached Curtin this season is just another example that we have no actual idea what we're doing.

I agree the overall development of our youth is not great.

And don't think our coaches are great.

Some examples...
Curtin handled poorly
Taylor seems to be permanent sub
Now Rachele dropped.

But.... a lot of issues with Hamish.
Jones and McHenry dud picks.
McAsey, why waste pick 6 on a KPD when Murray taken as a Rookie is superb.
Was Rachele the right pick 6? We need elitr mids, he is a SF and tracking quite nicely in that role. But will never be an elite mid.

Utter nonsense.

Nank, Woz and Dowling all developed their game in the SANFL to ensure they are AFL ready, how is playing guys at AFL level who aren't ready for AFL helping their development? You practice your skills, develop what you are being taught, become consistent in things like: running back hard, where to stand, what to do in X situation and so on in at a lower level (SANFL) or has every club been getting that wrong for the last 150 years?

If we replaced Murphy, who do we put in as a small forward? We have McHenry. Yes, he is lucky lucky lucky to be in the side but he plays a role which nobody else seems able to.

Fog spent some time in defence in 2019, perhaps it helped him develop?

Murphy does not play SF.

And if he did, he is terrible.

Murphy plays stoppage mid. Never goes into the Centre Bounce, but follows the ball.
No good at this role either.

Perfect role for Rachele, or Pedler.

Dowling, remember that kid? Hasn't played for a few weeks but has still done more than Murphy recently.

Wherever we think he plays, his only competition is McHenry. Rachele is already in the side and Pedlar is the most disappointing player this side of James Sellar.

And Jones and Pedlar and Mchenry and Dowling and Taylor and Berry and Cook and basically we do this for every single young kid that is not a KPP

It's incredible to think if rory sloane was drafted now and was coached by matthew nicks he would be stuck playing half forward
