You do realise that hopper (26 years old) and taranto 25 years old are both signed to 7 year deals at Richmond. I don't really have any skin in the game as to whether they are better than our two (fortunately we have cripps and Walsh who are better than all if them).

Could turn out to be terrible list management giving any midfielder apart from the absolute upper echelon a mid 20's midfielder a 7 year contract, let alone 2 if them.
Why ?

Most quality mids play until 32 which they are and $700k these days is not really a great deal when you consider
Cerra - $700k+
Williams $850k
Martin - $2 years 2 million
McNuggets $800+

Apologies for the mispost.

Let's look at it this way. I think that Trent cotchin is definitely a better midfielder than hopper and maybe taranto. Clearly not now but over the course of their careers.

It would be list management suicide now to be paying Trent cotchin $700k this year at 32.

You will be paying both of these guys $700k when they are 32 and Hopper $700k when his 33.

That's the risk. If they take you to a flag whilst you have still the lynch, dusty, Grimes, Nankervis DNA then it's great list management. If they don't its Mitchell and Omeara Mach 2 but for much longer.

Even allowing for rust that was a poor quality game.

Neither team has addressed fundamental weaknesses In structure, game plan and personnel.

Great fun though it was close and Tommy Elbows secured the draw.

Hopper plays his last year as a 32 year old
Trent doesnt need to earn alot this year similar to jack - These guys are set for ever being Richmond royalty
Taranto will play his last year as a 31 year old and will most likely play longer

Also need to rememver that these guys didnt arrive as free agents and if they do retire earlier due to injuries the a payout will be negotiated as it usually is.
How old will Docherty , Cripps , Ed be when their contracts are finished ?

Not many quality players retire before 32

Just have a look at the Geelong mids i think you will find atleast 6-7 that are near that age already

Don't mind any criticism of the players, the standard, the shooting or the teams. A pulsating draw between the two old enemies before almost 90,000 people at the G is a marvelous start to the season. Great for the season, for the old crosstown Tigers VS Blues rivalry and a really good indication that the grounds will be full this round.

Carlton defence held up well, but went a bit flood for me and stopped their chances at transition.

Richmond should have won by at least a couple of goals with the amount of waste inside 50 but that’s footy.

Rioli clear BOG, the drive he gave Richmond was first class.

Motlop for the blues shows serious promise.

Yes Rioli has really elevated his game. Stood out when others turned it over.

Carltons lack of composure last 5 mins cost them the game. Lot of blind panic.

Its understandable in a way. Carlton are just not used to being in contention. Tight game, big crowd, Tigers knowing all about the big game atmosphere and how to survive it.
Blues obviously going to be a bit greenhorn.

I think the concern is still Prestia.
No way can you count on him to make it through the year. If he goes down, your midfield feels the snowball effect. Cotchin looks well past it. Surely you guys have a young kid more than capable than him?
That's literally the reason we recruited Hopper and Taranto. If Prestia goes down, we shouldn't get absolutely towelled in the centre with those guys there is the plan.

Did not watch, tired of these 2 being gifted the Opening Game and turning on absolute crapfests.

Looks like I made the right decision.
Yeah, should be a big club with lots of interest, like Sydney

Huh? We won the clearance game which has been an absolute rarity for 6 years, our team defence looked alot better for the most part except when we got opened up on the rebound after shiteful i50 entries and our pressure game was back. Tidy up the execution and we win by 6 goals. Plus Taranto edged cripps head to head who absolutely dominated r1 last year.

Really? I was there tonight and thought their structure behind the ball was elite. By no means saying we played well, but we really struggled to move the ball forward and it was because of their defensive structure. Yes, they were pretty bad going forward but I actually think our defence was equally very on-point tonight and had a big part to play there.

If they keep that up, not many teams will be able to withstand Richmond’s time-in-forward-half and relentless i50s. It’s top-4 material in my opinion. Next few weeks will put tonight in some perspective.
I'd say both defenses were damn good. Number of goals stopped by great defending - especially the Blues defenders.

Tigers forward movement was not clean, but the basics are there.

Carlton looked very capable when they were able to get their tall forwards one out - or 2 on 2. Tigers defenders were too short (until Miller went back). I reckon the Blues will tear up quite a few defences based on last night. Good crumbing too.

Overall a lot of rust knocked off. Both teams look like they have a good balance of attack and defence. And the intent was clear. Good for this time of year.

Agree, lots of positives to take from last nights game. Tarants and hops will only get better as they learn our system. Really it was looking like a loss up until that lynch goal so we take the 2 points and move on.

Wrong. They say the stand rule is what led to faster, higher scoring games last year. It allows the player with the ball to run around and play on without fear of being tackled by someone inside the five metre zone.

Scoring went down after an early increase. Stand leads to sides dropping back deep, which allows easy ball movement until the forward 50, then congestion. It changes he game a lot.

Why? He was pretty good. Kicked a goal, 6 marks 4 of which were contested. Still has a decent spring in the legs. Had pitiful delivery to him inside 50 all game too. Was a good battle with Young who was good too.

Good for another 40 odd goals this year I reckon.
He looked old and was well out of it.

This is not right, you need to check you're maths.

Hopper just turned 26, at the start of his seventh season he will have just turned 32, not 33, and Taranto will have just turned 31.

Likelihood is Hopper may be in his last year and declining for that final year of his contract, but in 7 years time $700k would likely be only worth around $550-$600 in todays money as salary cap increases.

Pretty sure that locking in Taranto on only $700k during his prime next 5 years will be viewed as excellent business.

Over the next 7 years I'm pretty confident we will come out in front in totality.

The Carlton McGovern is an absolute spud
The thing is, he does do some good stuff occasionally. I saw him take a few good marks and do some hard work in the backline at times. But then he inexplicably has these horrible brain explosions.

It must be so frustrating for Blues fans. If he was just an out-and-out dud, they could just write him off and move on. But he shows all these glimpses of being a decent player in between all the f-ups.
