Review AFL 2nd Qualifying Final post-mortem - Geelong v St Kilda

Also, all their BIG names played amazingly - ie, Roo, Hayes, Monty, Goddard. And ours were so so, ie Ablett, Chappy, Selwood, SJ. Which is a pretty big reason for me.

Makes me wish we didn't drop some of those games this year, and were going into play the Dogs tomorrow.... BAH!

Now that I have calmed down a bit, I'm looking for a few more positives. I think we learned a lot about StK tonight, while they get an armchair ride into the GF, it's better we learned those thing tonight rather than a PF or GF. And as someone else said, we'd have to face Collingwood sometime if we're to take the flag.

Tough break Cats.

I like the fact that there are posters simultaneously hoping for us (Freo) to beat the Hawks and then disrespecting us in the next breath.

If we had to pick an opponent I would wish for Geelong over St Kilda - I think we match up against you guys pretty well, where-as we play mega-flood stoppage teams poorly.

See you at the MCG Friday (or will it be Docklands?).

Alright i've had enough of this.

Ablett won some of the most amazing hard balls you will ever see and found a way through the traffic when the rest of our players were turning it over.

What does he have to do to please you people. He was incredible at times, so far above anyone else.

Calm down mate... seriously.

I said he was so so, and its my opinion. He was probably one of our BOG for me, but my point was the Saints stars, were better than ours IMO - and thats what wins a lot of games where the teams are pretty even.

I never said he was bad.

That last free was absolute crap, ever since it started raining the umpires had been letting those ones go (play on) time and time again. Most 50-50 calls went against us tonight and people on here should not be scared to say the truth in fear of looking like a sore loser. We were rolled plain and simple. One of the biggest things I was not happy with tonight was an incident near the end of the first quarter. Riewoltd was on the mark and you could clearly hear the umpire tell him come back 1 metre atleast 4-5 times.... he simply ignored it and the umpire then called play on. Favourtism at its finest.... cant believe no one else has mentioned this. If you dont believe me check the replay.

And I never said you said he was bad.

You were just looking in the wrong direction at Ablett.

Lol, you were reacting as if I had said he was bad then. And placing me in a category of others who had commented that he was bad.

And by direction, do you mean opinion? Saints stars outshone Cats stars, my opinion.

SJ, thanks for the Youtube upload. Mooney's right, ump just cost us the game. Let the game go!! Its a final!!! The umpires (and the cats) killed the first half, the second half they let it go and the cats got some momentum. Worst part about the decision was that it was the first decision I can remember for about 5 minutes other than the odd ball up. Still, we're still in it...

After watching that.. I cannot string the words together to make any sense. Wet game, finals football, you don't pay that.

Which made Mooney's mouthing off all the more stupid and undisciplined. It could have easily been 50.

ahh so gay, there was a moment of extacy then just crushed feeling
cant really blame that 1 instance tho, 1-7 or watever it was in the last quarter really pooned us

Agree...it felt like 2008 all over again goal kicking costing us the win. Thank goodness Pods will be back this week.

Although if we had played in the first half like we did in the second, half, we'd have won anyway even with the poor goalkicking.

Went to game. Unfortunately, Mooney's tackle was a free. Besides, we were losing all night, and lucky to get as close as we did.

The thing I noticed is that we really looked old tonight. Players like Corey and Ottens looked like they don't have that much left in the tank. Maybe, next year, we need to start getting more games into Duncan, Taylor Hunt, Menzel and other VFL players. These guys won't be arund forever.

In the next two years I see Milburn, Rooke, Corey, Ottens and Mooney pulling the pin. Maybe Cameron Ling as well, unless they change him from a tagger to a regular forward, where his pace isn't as exposed.

We looked slower than the Saints, and the worry is, our aging list is slowing down and being exposed a few times this year. Maybe we need youth and get some pace.

Hey Mods, can we have separate pre-match and post-match threads?

I feel gutted, especially since I'd thought we'd won it. It's going to be tough to get the GF now, let alone win it!

Out back 6 were getting smashed in the first half, and we couldn't get it out of our defensive 50. We were really lucky StK didn't blow us out of the game.

Harry was we and truly beaten by Riewoldt, (I wonder if Lonergan would have made a difference). Joel Selwood couldn't get into the match and some of Mackie's turn-overs were atrocious. In some ways we were lucky to get so close. (betcha Hawthorn think they have us beaten already)

Anyone still think Stokes is not in our best 22?

I thought he was borderline and I will concede I was wrong insofar as he played well tonight and should stay for the rest of the year now.

I heard somewhere if Freo win tomorrow we'll be playing them at Etihad next week.

Should play them at Skilled, but that'd stuff up the GFL finals.

That's correct..if Freo fri night at the Dome, if Hawks, Fri night at the G.

Actually it's not a bad thing considering we really haven't played well at the G this year whereas we have played well in our 3 games at the Dome.

To be fair Esqui this is partly nothing to do with you guys, and more about the close matches we always have against the Hawks, as for you guys, it's simply because in Melbourne you're not as good a side as you are at home. We all recognise we'll have to play well to beat Freo next week, so no disrespect there.

It will be at Docklands.

Wasn't so-so at all. He singlehandedly kept us in the game. While the rest of our midfield were crap, he was getting clearance after clearance. Ran his arse off all night. He gave everything he could and he looked less than his brilliant best because of the others, it had nothing to do with him.

This. If we play the Hawks we play our 'home' final at their home ground. If we play Freo they have to make an interstate trip.

FWIW, I think Freo will beat Hawthorn tomorrow.

I've been running the line that we need to have Menzel and THunt in the team even though they haven't "earnt it" and no-one seems to agree with me

But it's true. We need some more run and pace out there. We simply got outrun tonight by a less skillful team

This is only our second loss in 10 finals in 4 years and on both occasions bad kicking cost us dearly, although weather conditions didn't help. We also seemed old, slow and generally not as hungry as as the Saints (they out-tackled and out-marked us). It looked to me as though the hunger was not as intense as last year.

On the positive side, I absolutely love Bartel's work out there; he has definitely enhanced his big-game reputation after last night.

Hunt I can see. Menzel, I fear, would be bashed from pillar to post in the hurley burley of a crunch final.

well done maggots

can we expect this one to request a lap of honor like Scott McLaren when he's finished.

The game was ruined by them well before tonight.

I really feel for you guys. Cats should have won given really poor decisions that went your way. Notwithstanding the touched Mooney/Dawson goal and the head high to Stevie J that was not there, you guys really had a terrible run with the umps.
