Is it done from the Coaches & the league ?????

I know in the past it usually has been the Minor Premiership Coach,
that has taken the honours,
obsessively they have change the criteria

Two others could have been looked at as well --- really think about it

Tyson Lane getting Central a tighter club

Chris Adams taking Souths to ---OK-- 4 wins-----but look how many they only lost by a few points

if we are reading into why the others were not named, then, these two gents need to be in the mix

I know I will be bagged on this,

But HEY ,

All Coaches have had done a bloody good year

AND I FOR ONE APPLAUD THEM ALL

I'm Tamba & that is my call today;)

Yes you will be bagged on this Tamba. For a team to win as you said 4 games finish 2nd or 3rd last, how can the their coach possibly be coach of the year. I may have said some stupid things this year but that takes the cake. With everything that has gone on at Souths this year that statement really is a stupid one. The coach of the year should be the premiership coach but since the award is given out before grand final day it should be given to the minor premiers. If a team improves greatly in a season (comes from near last to make the finals or grand final) then they should be considered to. So this year Griffiths should have got it. Viola coached the rep team for 1 game. Really a puzzling winner in my view.

Just because Viola coached the Rep Team wouldn't give him Coach of the Year surely??? Guys at this level know what's required and generally coach themselves and the coach needs to work the bench. I honestly thought that Griffiths would have taken it out with the turnaround that Hawks has had this year. Port may have lost some players last year but they gained at least 8 from the NT comp. I agree that Tyson Lane did some good stuff out at Centrals but getting in players in the latter half of the year would have been tough on players that had been there all year putting in every week. If you have a look at the NRL Coach of the Year, it's easy to see why the coach was picked. This award use to be voted on by all NRL Coaches (use to be anyway) and this is the way it should be.

Umpire of the Year Award would be in trouble if they let the clubs vote on it. The award would be cancelled because there would be no votes.:p:p:p

Tamba I'm with Lachrilly, that is the stupidest comment I have read on here all year, (I've jumped in at an opportune time!).

Port to belt Hawks in the reserves and Saints to do the same to Hawks to round off a miserable day for the poor old Hawks!

There's not much love for the Hawks getting up in either grade this weekend...
I wouldn't have it any other way.

Totally and utterly deluded I'm afraid Flintstone...if it were that easy why do clubs go to such trouble in finding the right one?

At Rep team level, a lot of the players are coaches or assistants.

I agree with Flintstone, the position of coach in the rep game is more ceremonial than functional. Teamwork, clubs do a lot of homework and spend time and effort finding a coach, the rep squad I'm guessing doesn't take as much time and effort for one match.

It's not like they worked on a game plan or structure. He simply put them into positions and ran the interchange. It's an honour to do it, but you don't put the result on your resume, as so much is decided by what cattle is available.

A good coach isn't determined by the result of one game. If Hawks lost by a point on Saturday, you'd hardly say Griffiths has had an unsuccessful year just because of a 1 point defecit.

My apologies Flintstone I should have read your post better, I thought you were referring to club coaches.

Yes I agree that a rep coach is more a ceremonial position as Saint stated.

Go Hawks this weekend !!

You all missed my point the team was taken FORWARD not BACKWARD they improved themselves thats what it is all about. Lost a few games by only a couple points if things had gone their way they might have been in the mix for a semis spot

homeandhosed--- a bit late in the season to throw in your farthings worth  where have ya been all year???? are you another johnny come lately ???

So what you're saying is that since they beat one side above them once (and lost to them twice) that the coach is in the mix for coach of the year. I'm sorry, but being so dreadful one year that makes a season where you beat only two teams for the season look good doesn't mean the coach did a good job.

How much worse would that team have done without a coach at all? 1 game?

They were 10 games behind third for goodness' sake and while they improved at the start of the season, they were woeful towards the end.

Ride 'Em Cowboy,
you just don't look at the full picture ( some games were close through out the season & I didn't say he deserved the award ) but what is the use of trying to get you see other things, then Saints this Saints that, at least see some other view of other clubs instead of your head up your -------

I"m Tamba & that's my say on this matter. over & out :D

Alright, enough about the coaches, lets focus on the MASSIVE games this weekend. It seems as though most people on here have written the hawks off in both grades. I feel both games will be a lot closer than everyone thinks with hawks taking it right up to Port in the 2's and Saints in the 1's. I'm sitting on the fence at the moment, waiting to hear the final teams. Ie- Will Walsh play for Saints and Bartlett for Hawks (Where has he been anyway)> They're 2 guys that could shape the final....

2 Big games this weekend... In the seniors obviously Saints are red hot favourites with both their leading goal kickers for the year in Walsh and McQueen into a side that won by 90 points...

Saints by 120 points ... Poynter to kick 10 and get BOG

In the twos Port Douglas should get up in a close game with Pittorino BOG (however surely he plays in the seniors)

Also did half of my Cairns Post fall out this morning?? No Preview of the local AFL or Local NRL grand finals?? What a joke

Tamba, i've been hardly Saints focused when it comes to the coaches award. I thought Lane or Griffiths had the best shake at it and I've said that in previous posts.

I'm tipping Poyner for the BOG too. Pittorino named in the seniors and reserves according to the website, maybe an emergency, no Bartlett. Doesn't have the Saints team. Has the umpires though, which I hadn't seen before this week.

The Cairns post does have a story about Saturday night's roller derby with an expected crowd of around 300! Dykes on wheels, yeeehaa! Honestly, the worst rag in Australia. And so biased in its news coverage its sickening. The editor is running for a seat in parliament for the LNP for god's sake.

Wouldn't be that hard to ring the coaches of sides not in the GF and ask who their tip for the game is and who they think will get BOG,.. Key Match-ups, past results etc...
Hopefully they have something in tomorrow however should be in today's paper

There's something about Max O'Halloran in the paper. Runs the show down at Saints and give the pass or fail to the WAGS apparently. Better than nothing.

If you're not aware Saint, that IS the Saints team :D

After reviewing the teams this morning, my tips are;
Seniors: Saints by 2 goals, BOG will be Powell from Saints
Reserves: Hawks by 3 goals if Pittorino plays in the 2's, BOG will be Pittorino
Surely Pittorino won't be running around int he magoo's though??? Can anyone shed any light on why Bartlett isn't playing? That's a big loss for the Hawks!

C'mon Carl, if we shedded light on either Pittorino or Bartlett it could ruin the suprises. You want to get your monies worth on Saturday don't you?

If I was a betting man, I would put money on Pittorino and Bartlett both playing for the Hawks. If they both play & Walsh plays (heard mixed reports on him) then I think both teams would have their strongest line ups and we're in a for a great tussle!:D

Pretty impressive line-ups either way, going to be a very good matchup. Both sides of course will play their mind games, both sides will go in with their best 22. I think Walsh will play regardless injury etc, I don't think anyone would of thought he wouldn't of played this week just like Buddy Franklin for Hawthorn. It's the GF, it's a roll of the dice and if he plays and plays well you'd obviously say it was a good roll.

Speaking of betting, I'm still waiting for Sportsbet to place up the actual odds for the game. Wouldn't mind putting some hard earnt on the game ;)

Read the big colourful box below the O'Halloran article..

Saint I have to agree, the Cairns Post coverage is woeful at best. The same can be said for the Sports segment on Sea FM. The guy that does it (from WIN News I believe) must grit his teeth when he does the AFL. He spends time talking about the League but quickly glosses over the AFL. When is the Cairns Media going to realise that AFL is a far superior sport with more followers? Seriously, the media in Cairns are a lot to be desired. Have a look in the fish wrapper on Monday and see who has the more coverage, AFL Cairns or the CDRL.

Why is Pittorino in the reserves. If Hawks are relying on Booth to kick a bag then they are in trouble. Pittorino is a big game player. Silly Hawks.
Willy & Lenny need big games. Both struggled in the 2nd semi.
