Hey guys, we had a guy walk in last night at palmy, big fella said he had not played for a couple of years but said he played 7 years at saints ? Brett Jeffrey any feed back would be appreciated. I believe he has been boxing fairly regularly had a number of amateur fights? Ring any bells?

Great bloke and would be a very good pick up. Obviously super fit with all his boxing work and more than capable footballer.

They are young indigenous kids from the Cape... You can't just draft them out to clubs. Idea of AFL House is to keep them with other indigenous kids so it makes the transition down easier. Who would be responsibile for driving 2-3 kids to Port or out to Holloways etc ??
Agree that it is a big advantage to Nth Cairns however all clubs have different advantages in terms of recruiting and this is one that Nth Cairns have been proactive with and been able to use to their advantage

Brett's a real nice bloke, decent player & a very handy bloke to have on your side when tempers fray..! Played in at least one flag at Saints. Id say a valuable addition to your club.

Hello Gents..AFL Cairns used to be a ripping thread... It's dropped of alot...I'm a former resident of Nth Qld, now living in Asia....AFL Cairns is the most difficult environment for any Club to be successful and survive, in any AFL Climate...The Bottom line is.. You are as good as the people at that Helm of your Club..Which takes a Team with alot of free time and money to do...Every Club has different Dymanics..Succellsful Clubs in AFL Cairns are run by Succelsfull people...You can talk about Who's coming and Who's going... At the end of the day.. It's a financial climate clouded by the odd Lady associate...

Your too kind........ Do you think anyone else could link up a deal for young player to fly in and fly out from Thursday Island....... Who do you think would have seen Issac Rokeby????.............. What about Rex Liddy and then get him a job???.... Who else can get a 'new' recruit from Tassy gf a job at AFL Cairns???/............ Seriously i tilt my hat to Nth Cairns for using their 'links to AFL Cairns' but seriously do any of the other clubs have access to the assistance the tigers have had in last 2 years. Great for them i say but if talented young players come to Cairns from any of the AFL Cairns programs they should be put in a 'draft pool' and the same supports, resources etc but packaged around them at ANY of the other clubs in Cairns, not just one!

Thats all i am saying :)

ummm maybe these players chose to play at Norths because of the long history of culture within the club with Indigenous people of the Cape and PNG etc.. How many indigenous players were at saints last year? Year before?

Heard devonport magpies in tassie had a great win on the weekend there new recruit killed it in the middle big fella LUKE POWELL , must have linked up with his old coach Paul griffiths , great pick up this early in the year .i taught he had signed at cutters?

So he had a good game?
were you impressed ?
If so, that's great.

Maybe he needed some decent apple cider

Saturdays pre season games

Centrals look like having a very long season unless they recruit quickly or their recruits turn up saw nothing of interest there.

Port Douglas was surprised they were flat no real sence of direction on the field

Hawks played two different sides completely struggled against Port but held their own against Saints who seemed to struggle in this game

Souths went in with only 22 players some good play, some left me scratching my head fell down in some areas

Norths are a good side will take it to Saints liked what I saw

Sorry didn't see Lions play

Saints were hot and cold struggled at first against the Hawks, too a little bit of time to get rolling against Souths, may not have there way all year.

A red card should have been used on them in the game against Souths.

Umpires were red hot on slinging of players.

Fair observations!!!

Hawks - Didnt see a big man for them and think they will miss their ruckman very much!
Saints - Had up to 15 missing from usual team and the reserves filled in very nicely ;)
Norths- Look really good! Well drilled and lean so expecting BIG things from them
Souths - Will shape up nicely with new recruit in the middle
Lions - Will really miss the goal scoring power of Lewis and will have to find new ways of putting on score board pressure
Port - Lack size around the middle and a key forward so will rely on hard running and goal sneaks. Depth will be tested if any of the onballers go down
Dogs- Will struggle and lack fitness / depth!

Really excited to see Norths build on 2012 and will eagerly be looking to Round 2 game Tigers v Saints at Watsons.

Any player news from other clubs?

Good to hear some reviews on the teams, are there any scores floating around?

traditionally is it worth reading into the pre-season results too much? or do teams typically hold back in the carnival?

From the weekend Nths looked the goods but also played the bottom 2 sides from last year so you would hope they did.
Hawks lacked height all over the ground but still played well in patches. Gribble looked to be moving well on his knee so could be in for a big year
Souths seem to be similar to last year with English the only standout in the 2nd game... Noticed Lock injured and didnt play the 2nd game.
Port didnt look as impressive as they were last Friday night against Nths so guessing they had heaps out
Centrals and Cities still way off the mark and lack any depth. Who was Numb 1 for centrals?? Ednie I'm guessing.
Saints took awhile to get going and like most sides had 10 or more senior players out. Good to see four of the guys including a few irish boys play their first ever AFL game and contribute.

numerouno don't think you can take a lot out of the weekends games other than Nths and Saints showed that their depth is still stronger than the other clubs. Most sides fielded a large number of reserve players.

Bit puzzled by these comments, Lions thumped Centrals by similar margin than Norths did, then ran the Tigers (who looked impressive) to within 2 goals in a game they could have won with a little more composure? Still have 8 bona fide senior players to come into the side. To say they are "way off the mark" & lump them with Centrals is daft.... Underestimate the 2013 Lions at your peril....

Good on you for sticking up for your club when your already getting bagged out before the season starts. We all want our club to be competitive, and the competition for that matter. Good luck to the Lions and all clubs, hope its a cracker year.

So are we still to believe saints don't pay players didn't they just sign glen martin he is not playing for nothing, now I could be wrong but I have not heard if he is an assistant coach then it's ok . Who made the final of the pre season can't find it on website ?

Saints and Norths are in the pre-season final And the ladies final is on after this

Souths have a trial against Centrals at 1pm from my understanding

Lets please leave the innuendo of A club paying its players.

we (well ,most of us ) flogged this last year and they will not move from their stance of the doctrine they spruke .

Agree Martin will not play for the love of it he would demand some serious coin to pull on the boots at ANY club

I have heard Martin is on serious coin and is demanding to plays ones right away or he will leave for the second highest paying club! Souths?
