AFL Cairns -- Season 2014

I sure hope so Lion, lots of talk last year and not a great deal happened out on the paddock. Marc is a good bloke and this is his chance to put his stamp on the team, rather than the mid year handover he inherited.
Exactly right, last year was wasted, really disappointing. But Marc is quietly building a strong squad, better depth & we have added some dynamic recruits. Scott Hughes is a Walsh class forward, several other quality players are on their way & a few good players returning. Fingers crossed.

You could say 2013 was a wasted year for CCL but don't disrespect Jason Roe's efforts, there where times when he would get the water bottles and organize things behind the scene when others could of put their hand up to help!
Remember not only CCL but all other clubs should note that many hands make light work, some do it better then others
You need to understand that Jason took on a rabble that was left due to Tim seymour and he made them competitive.
But with any leadership change it's always a case of
The king is dead, long live the king.
Don't knock people willing to give it a go,
I don't think any year is wasted in footy, it's a privledge to be able to play the game of Australian football an if you are having fun an enjoy it then football is the winner, whether or not you are winning games

Im not disrespecting J Roe, how did you come up with that? Results wise, it was a wasted year, Even Roey admits that. As for knocking people willing to give it a go, were you not the one sinking the boot into D Lock earlier..?

Lion, I was having a good night until you brought up d lock

Now I'm gonna have to indulge myself in Big Bang theory, and get my "Penny" fix to hopefully raise my spirits

From a source at lunch yesterday, Souths also are having reasonably good numbers on the paddock.
A few heading up from Canberra due to their links with the coaching staff. Plus some newer faces from Vic. trundling north.

Will be an interesting year.

Any word from PD or Centrals on movements ???

Lawso (long, long time player) has coaching role of Souths Magoo's this year.
With Willow retiring again !!!!

If they are senior players from the Canberra NEAFL comp they may be handy but if they played second tier ACT football they will be average to ordinary players at best

Rexel what so you class as Canberra tier 2 comp ?
Is that div 1 and below .?
The Canberra comp very much like the cairns comp is very underrated

I have followed ACT footy for a while. Since NEAFL div 1 has been made up of NEAFL clubs reserves sides and isn't even close to Cairns footy

The difference between the leagues, is the bottom end players and professionalism neafl reserves train the same as neafl 3-4 times a week, you have at least 10 - 12 neafl quality players in the top sides every week ( injury depending ), most likely ,2-3 development players on the side, ( GWS academy) then backed up by quality div 1 players. Canberra take all the quality juniors from around the coast leagues. And have a lot more money, cairns top end players could play neafl but fall away at the bottom end, you mostly have full time staff and coaches in neafl to develop players all times of the day. Neafl reserves are also semi professional. Div 1 to div 2 is a big step in Canberra.
Div 2 sides adfa and anu would demolish any reserves side in cairns, again they are strong clubs with a constant influx of players due to the schooling programs. Cairns will improve a lot in the next few years especially if a neafl team eventuates, if cairns had a neafl side this year they would of needed to recruit 12 players to be competitive, remember neafl sides have a operating budget, Of over 1 million.
Cairns is just behind the Canberra div 1 , and closing.
Oh yeah the recruits should go ok, sorry for the rant but lets be real.
I am supporting cairns but it has a little bit to go, before it's at that level,

. If I was a coach in cairns and or a recruiter for a club and a player who is 20 or 25 on a NEAFL playing list from Canberra clubs approached me to play, I wouldn't be interested. I watched your cairns players who went to Canberra in 2010 struggle and I have watched the quality of player from NEAFL teams drop off severely from the top 12 to 15 players in each team. Depends on whether this league wants to recruit quality players or are happy to recruit numbers. Just an opinion.

Happy with your opinion, but Its not only the cairns guys who sometimes struggle, I have seen guys who have played in the vfl go to Canberra and struggle to get a neafl game, I know guys who had been 50 game players at top O and M clubs struggle, that is my first hand experience as a coach, I don't think the quality of players has dropped at neafl especially After the northern restructure, Canberra teams will struggle this year, as the pool of quality isn't there compared to northern sides.
As far as recruiting, you should always go for quality players and people, that fill a need, and give back to your club. But you should embrace everyone who walks into your clubs door.
By the way they are not my cairns players, I was defending Canberra div 1 and the quality of football.
That's just my opinion as a former coach in the neafl system.

That's just my little experiences,

Certainly, everyone is available to them.

So far AFL Cairns has released their fixture and there are a few surprises, but all in all i'd say that i can see why they have a few later games but why are the so little night matches?

Clearances page busy, 9 in at CTB. One being Brian Durbridge, a very VERY good player...

Very interesting list of recruits to Centrals,
Jason must have a few contacts to pull these variety players from all over .
Well done Centrals, it seems to me they want to get back to their glory days and the wallet is out with no moths inside.

I didn't say it was a wasted year nor am I knocking Mr Roe for a moment, just saying its hard coming in mid year and having an impact compared to a structured pre season and new year to look forward to.
And while I agree that playing the game is the main reason to be there, its heck of a lot easier to get fun out of it If your a part of a winning team- or at least one that has a fair chance of winning.
