Sorry if this has already been answered, but is there an expectation that a club will let another club know they'll take/bid on an NGA player?
Nope. Some do, some don't. I don't think it should be a thing, really

Rival clubs believe the Bombers are open to trading down the order, knowing big-bodied midfielder Phillipou could still be available outside the top 10.

St Kilda, who have the 10th pick, are known to be keen to move up but would have to give up next year’s first-round selection to do so - and that is a steep price, given the excitement about the 2023 class.

I hope this happens. We’ll get Phillipou, Clarke or McKenzie and a decent pick for next year.

Doubt Clark slips that far. Phillipou, McKenzie, Ginbey or even Humphrey could be there though.

GCS keen on Humphrey.

Are you a fan of this trade?

Gold Coast will take Humphrey or Ginbey. Looking more like Ginbey atm.

I do like it. I can't see Clark slipping past Geelong so one of the 5 mids I really like (Tsatas, McKenzie, Phillipou, Humphrey or Ginbey) will be there and I'd expect us to trade up into the teens with 25/F2 because of it. If we walk away with:

10: McKenzie (as an example)
17 (Pies): Hustwaite
Davey x2
Munkara as Cat B

Whilst adding an F1? We're bandits. The Collingwood trade at time of trade would be picks 23, 69 and F2 for 17 and 51.

I’m hoping for this trade more than a specific player at this stage.

Edit: and just to be a smug POS, I predicted a few days ago that our interest in poo was for a trade down.

Trading 4 for 9 and a future first is damn good business if we get it done.
I’d say a lot of other teams would think the same therefore less chance it would happen.

What if Clark, Phiilpou and McKenzie are all gone by pick 10?

Then one of Ginbey or Humphrey won't be gone. The top 4 will be Cadman, Ashcroft, Sheezel and Wardlaw. That means at least one of (from least to most likely) Tsatas, Clark, Phillipou, Humphrey, Ginbey or McKenzie will be. I'd be happy with any of them.

But we’re the only team willing to give up access to one of the ‘big 5’ players. No one picking ahead of us will do it. And there’s a big chance we just take Tsatas if the trade doesn’t happen with us. Hence, they don’t do the trade with GCS or the hawks.

Saints would have to be obsessed with Tsatas to offer their F1. Much more likely that they are happy to hold onto it and take whoever is left at Pick 10. Good chance its Mackenzie who they've already put the time into.

The 1 team that might make some sense is Hawthorne offering an F2 to move up 2 spots if they loved Tsatas and wanted to get ahead of us this year. Probably leaves us Phillipou which we should be happy with. The extra F2 would open up some good options for us.

Would be happy with that trade also

My ideal is more fanciful (but hey, that's an ideal for ya)
1. Wardlaw slips to pick 4 (if not, we happily take Tsatas).
2. We trade 22 + F2 for Melbourne's 12 (Geelong grabbed Jefferson and the Dees are now targeting Barnett, you see). Phillpou's interviews spook the top 10 picks so he slips to 12.
3. A. Davey bid doesn't come until late 20s.
4. Neither Jayden or Munkara are bid on. We take both as rookies (Jayden as Cat A, Munkara as Cat B).
5. We invite a bunch of eager lads to train over summer for the SSP.

Jackets' swan song year ends with: Wardlaw/Tsatas, Phillipou, Davey, Davey, Munkara.

We tank 2023, Parish walks to Geelong, we get the double Reid sweepstakes. Our 2026 premiership spine is: Reid, Cox, Reid, Baldwin, Reid. Centre bounce attendees are: Draper, Hobbs, Reid, Phillipou/Perkins.

Have I just about synthesized all the dreams of this thread or have I missed something.

Oh, right. We actually trade back 4 to Saints for 9 and F1. Instead of Tsatas/Phillipou we end up with MacKenzie/Phillipou. Now I think we're complete.
You neglected to mention the golden ticket to Wonka's factory that you found.

I would actually take Wardlaw over Sheezal. If your dream comes true we would be taking 4 small / medium forwards in one draft. I know it is a spot that needs filling desperately but all eggs in one basket ?

I rate Sheezel as the most impactful in the draft. Will be a Hird\Burgoyne type when at his peak. Chuck him wherever we are struggling.

We're in agreement.

Juniors who are key forwards play forward essentially exclusively.

I've not read anything of Max King (Ben seemingly only played back because of Max's presence), McDonald, Amiss, Cadman, McKay, Curnow, Lynch, Daniher, Patton, Scache, Cameron or Boyd playing defence as juniors. Playing a quarter or a game here and there is not playing defence. Playing defence is having done it for half a year to the point that its second nature.

Guys like Ridley, Carlisle, Stewart and Hurley are the ones I can name off the top of my head. Played forward and back at something like 30/70 or 50/50. Interesting Stewart is probably the forward success that never was due to injury.

My impression is that the good defenders get swung forward to try to make things happen. It makes sense to me because if dominant making in defence works forward you've got a player whose virtually a unicorn these days.

Granted that there are lots of players who don't end up making it as forwards who play defence. That's usually career saving because they've been tried forward for so long but it hasn't worked.
Liam Jones and Schache are perfect examples. I think most of them do some time in defence as juniors because even if you're going to be a gun forward it is helpful in your early days to play some defence to round out your game and have a better understanding of what your whole team is going through on match day.

There are examples of people playing defence because the team needs it too.

I think Fletcher is the perfect example. If Essendon had not had Lloyd Lucas and Hird in the side, Fletcher would probably have been a better forward than most of them. However, he was a bit taller and a bit quicker and was the first-ever modern defender.
