Not a huge fan of the D'Ambrosia pick but Menzie makes sense. No big midfielders in the draft at the end of the year makes it even more bizarre.

Phillipou maybe? I haven’t see any of these guys but the way draft watchers are talking about his rate of improvement he could be in the mix for our top pick.

He's more of a forward/wing. Martin and Langford type.

My main issue with the D'Ambrosio selection is that they've already selected Lord and McDonagh as HB flankers in last year's draft on top of having Hind and a capable player in McGrath who needs to make a permanent move to HB. In isolation he's a decent recruit, but I'm not understanding the list strategy here.

Waterman is probably not going to play past this year. Stringer is injury-prone and probably doesn't have long left. Walla retired and Smith isn't likely to play consistently past this year. Perkins and Hobbs will eventually spend more time in the midfield. Why not give a rookie spot to a 189cm inside mid that can play forward and has a lot of upside? It's a free hit with nothing to lose. If they don't have any confidence in Lord or McDonagh less than a year after selecting them, then what was the strategy when drafting them? The VFL has zero developing mids. Is there no interest in obtaining some midfield depth?

Knowing Dodoro, the first round pick will be the best available mid, which will be another 180cm mid. I don't have any confidence in them ever looking to balance the midfield.

Both picks like to scrap it out and make tackles. I like it.
Scrappy tacklers as the theme hey?

I find that the recruiting targets can usually be more easily deciphered by looking at the later picks. It seems that high draft picks are to go for best available. The later picks you can judge those attributes that are being ranked a bit more highly. I am in favour of the increased value given to tackling pressure.

Spray picks at as many players in same position.
When 1/3 comes off, point to best 22 players drafted.
Forget the list is unable to compete

most of these names are clearly made up and are part of a phishing scam by the way:

View attachment 1414133
not a scratch on some of the other nominees:

Fergus Greene (cartoon frog)
Kim Kantilla (podracer)
Jed Foggo (jedi knight)
Jamieson Ballantyne (???)
Logan Elphinstone & Ingo Dammersmith (dwarves)
Kye Pfrengle (trickster in old Germanic fairytale)

For list strategy I'd say we actually need to get some great ball users coming out of the backline. At we have a mix of horrible users (Heppell/Kelly), okay users that can hit a simple target (Hind, McGrath and Laverde) and good users that struggle with agility and cutting angles on the man on the mark (Reid, Ridley, Redman).

Unfortunately Lord looks a mile off it (though was the youngest in his draft so has time) and McDonagh not much better. There would need to be a stack of growth for either to get an extension. It's clearly an area of need they recognize and unfortunately covid has hampered the ability to see the talent pool clearly.

Wouldn't mind putting spotlight on what happens at the end of the year now.

Obviously we all want a big midfielder, I still firmly on the Joel Trudgeon bandwagon. Doing reasonably well at VFL level and a defensive minded player who will pad out our thin VFL midfield at least.

I wouldn’t say that this represents that at all, I think both picks scream Truck emphasising that we need something and then RFK going out and finding it. Far less scattergun in the last 18 months imo.

I would have loved Carmichael and I reckon he represents a bit of immediate punch but at the same time we’re at the stage now where we may as well stack as much talent as possible, they’re both talented kids, hard workers by all accounts and fill a need.

No complaints.

Admittedly i agree
Don't mind this draft.

But dodoro does spray the picks

I'm a bit over this obsession about needing a big midfielder. If we don't rate one then why add them to the list? He'd have to leapfrog Parish, Merrett, Caldwell, Stringer, Hobbs and Perkins as a starting point. You've then got McGrath, Shiel, Langford, Durham and Martin floating through there in various capacities. We've addressed some key weaknesses of ball use, small defensive stocks and a gaping hole in our forward line with these two picks.

So you're okay with the midfield getting beaten up year on year by those with bigger bodies? Good to know.

Just get Brayshaw at the end of the year and we are half way to solving that problem.
It looks like they have targeted a tackling forward and a tackling defender which we desperately need too.
And if he re-signs, what then?

Maybe skipping on someone like Carmichael means that is the type of player we're going to target in the off season?
I think this is near the mark

Carmichael at 9 in the MSD is probably equal to pick 62 in the ND.

Yes he is a tall mid but he is probably a mediocre tall mid. Get proper talent now and then trade or FA in a gun.

In isolation I’m fine with the D’Ambrossio selection. A running half back who can distribute is most definitely a need.

BUT, it meant we skipped over yet another big bodied midfielder for a flanker when a big bodied mid has been the most obvious need on our list for a long time…

Love the Menzie selection.
