As much as oliver is an absolute gun. I think he takes us further back than closer to building a premiership list imo
Melbourne can ask for absolutely anything otherwise the deal doesn’t go through. And I’d expect that the starting price would be 2 1st round picks and someone like Perkins/ hobbs and maybe another player

The guy is still far and away the best inside mid in the comp. He compliments Parish and Merrett perfectly. If he's off the rails fair enough, we pass, but as a player there isn't anyone who moves us further towards a flag. IMO with a slightly better forward line they would have won the last 3 flags off the back of his and Petracca's work.

I think he's untradable unless there are problems. If there is, they can't be expecting top dollar. Two firsts gets it done IMO.

i will say, Goodwin has his own noise about him. And whether he's the coach to keep an Oliver on track v. Scott is worth considering.

You are right though. i scan this draft group and our pick.
Dropping Oliver next to Parish and Merrett is a formidable midfield, particularly with old man Goldy as ruck.

Our 2 1sts certainly don’t get it done, 8 which will become 11-12 and a f1 that is likely into teens. Zero chance they do that deal

While I know he was uncontracted, Cameron went for 13, 15 and 20 with 2 second rounders going back the other way. Oliver's contracted until 2030, the only reason they would let him go is if they want him out. They won't holding out for market value.

Cameron was also a free agent who was uncontracted. That’s the best deal Gws could manage
Oliver is contracted

Oliver is contracted
But unwanted... the only reason you would get rid of him is if you think he's a damaging influence. It would beyond stupid to expect top dollar for a guy you think is list poison.

cap space too, but i suspect the play is for how they get Reid and inject a Daicos-like element into their side (gun kid who adds to a premiership capable side)

Must be dawning on them that the window is while Gawn & May are there
And whilst Clarry is a gun, if he is offside with his teammates then it's going to be a distraction.

in 1-2 years they're gonna be lacking in the KPD and ruck space, their fwd line is alright struggling & they don't have a lot of mids coming through

How is he unwanted
They haven’t even said anything, other than it’s been rumoured they’re happy to listen to offers. It’s not a Grundy / treloar/ stringer situation where they’re getting kick out the door and will not be back

Given none of us are the list or player managers involved, we can't really speak with any authority.

I wouldn't say it's at all clear it's not the latter situation though.

They are in their window, Oliver is top 10 player in the comp when fit, he still has 4-5 years of prime left, he's contracted for another 7 years. There is absolutely zero chance they let him go if they want to win a flag next year unless they think he's poison. Being open to discussions as reported sows disharmony, you would not do it if you want to keep the player feeling wanted.

If he is wanted, then he ain't moving. Because there isn't any plausible trade that is more valuable than retaining Oliver in the pursuit of winning a premiership next year.

The trade only occurs if Melbourne want him gone.

it feels a little stringer.
player at odds with the club.

dees not stupid enough to crash his price publicly though.

Oliver is pretty clearly a bit munted in the head, and the Tom Morris stuff is almost certainly a strategic leak from Melbourne to set a rocket under him. Sending a "get your life together son" message in no uncertain terms.

Don't think it was intended to indicate he's actually on the market. Just using the media buzz to try and get their kid straightened out.

I’d rather be at the pointy end. Just don’t think giving all that up for Clarry gets us there.

I think we’re 80% the way there and we should go all in next summer. Be patient 12 more months, build depth then use that real depth to top up where needed.
I do

Shiel barely played for us, Stringer barely did much, some on here said he shouldnt be in the best 22

The others didnt play either

Oliver, Goldstein, Mckay and Gresham put us into top 6 calculations

We saw GWS not finish there and finish a kick away from probably winning the GF

Clayton Oliver is a top 10 player in the game, maybe better. They dont come around every year

Goldstein is on his last legs and Gresham is just another player.

Adding just a few pieces is not going to shoot you up the ladder, unless you already have your offense and defending game sorted out.
It’s so backwards to think in this age that still adding talent will suddenly make you a contender

Every other team has figured it out except essendon it looks like.
You know what would put us in in top 6 calculations? Having a top 6 defense, being top 6 in defending ball movement, being top 6 in forward half pressure.
A team like Adelaide would be perfect for oliver because they’ve got theyve game plan down pat for the last 2 years it’s just all about improving it, they just need another year or 2 for growth and add some more pieces along the way.

It doesnt have to

We sat top 6 for a decent chunk of the year and were 1 game out of the 8

Not so much Goldy

But Mckay, Gresham and Oliver

The club wouldnt be looking to bring all in and say we want to win finals next year if they didnt think the case

We might of sat top 6th but that wasn’t a true reflection of where we were at. We were a terrible defense, bad at defending ball movement and had shocking forward half pressure, all 3 things you need to compete in September. I’m not talking about where we are on the ladder during the season, rather being able to stand up to and beat the best sides in finals. We would’ve got wiped off the park by nearly every team in the top 8.

The club clearly disagrees with you

Obviously but the stats don’t lie and it’s not like the the list management/ direction of the club has be overly good for the past 2 decades.

Careful you are entering the hamsters zone.
