We might of sat top 6th but that wasn’t a true reflection of where we were at. We were a terrible defense, bad at defending ball movement and had shocking forward half pressure, all 3 things you need to compete in September. I’m not talking about where we are on the ladder during the season, rather being able to stand up to and beat the best sides in finals. We would’ve got wiped off the park by nearly every team in the top 8.
We were a bottom 4 side on %… gave up more points than everyone except hawks north and eagles.
% is a pretty good indicator of where we are at.
Crows had a top 4 % you would expect them to make a leap next year by winning a few more tight games

For sure

Although I think Essendon’s percentage isn’t necessarily a true reflection of the talent on the list due to two end of season 70 point outlier losses, injuries and playing underdone players.

Agreed but that is still an indication where the list is at having to play those guys underdone. Jobe spoke about it also the lack of quality depth getting exposed late in the season.
We had some close losses but we also didn’t hammer teams we should of

For sure. However that’s what the moneys for… so to speak. Essendon were significantly under the cap and $$$ have an expectation of wins ie 1.

So when you combine those two factors it’s reasonable to expect that they will have better results against last year’s competition…

Unfortunately for Essendon every team is trying to get better and many are. It’s just as likely they get outpaced and slide backwards as they do move forward into contention.

Not sure where I saw it but there was either a tweet or an article about essendon trying to move up the draft to grab Duursma. May be who we are hoping to grab.
we'd need 3 from North, as i suspect the hawks would be keen (mid and def seem ok, and they have kpf's....also may go for Reid)

my thing is, if we're that far up already...what's a little more for pick 1.

Maybe it'll be like that time we brought in J Kelly but got the defender from Adelaide, this time we'll bring in Duursma but get the flanker from Port.

id move heaven and earth to get Zane Dursma. Is almost exactly the type of player we need, Young marking forward who could push up to the midfield in time

Pick 8 and 13 (if we get that from the saints)?

if you had 2 from North for 8 & 13
would you do 2 & F1 for 1?

The quintessential Essington pick

Not a chance.

You’ve already consolidated once doing it again when you have A player as good as Dursma at pick 3 is just silly.

Especially with the ridiculous offers WC have been getting.

Zane Dursma is your ideal Stringer replacement. (As is Harley Reid) it’s like choosing between Mills vs Oliver. Both will be great so just be happy with the one you get

Would be a bad outcome for us, a bad outcome for Duursma and a bad outcome for the club we're trading with.

A rare triple treat

yeah, this Essington pick is not in no mans land. When was the last time we picked a fwd flanker in the top 5?
We've had a top 5 pick three times the last decade. Let me ask you, when was the last time a forward flanker was taken top 5, period?

Also, no they may not have been top 5 picks but we've taken Perkins, Langford and Laverde as forward flankers in the first round in the past decade. Spent another first in trades for a combination of Smith and Stringer.

Harry Sheezel last year

He's a mid
Literally the first line in his rookie me profile says this

SNAPSHOT: “Arguably the best performed forward in this year’s draft crop, Sheezel has consistently impressed at all levels of football with his elite forward craft and goal sense.”
I know you hate being wrong so im leaving this debate here Ethan. The best ones get taken where they should be and Zane fits this description

Looks like they're describing a small forward there.

He's also played either half back or mid all year...

im talking about what they were in there draft year. Could argue a flanker was taken at pick 1 in 2017 (Cam Rayner).
I'm arguing about what they will be. Nobody drafts a player top 5 to be a forward flanker.
