I don't get the negative view of what we've done, even looking at it with the benefit of hindsight.

We got the best player in the draft for a positional need where we're absolutely desperate to upgrade. We could've done nothing at all this year and just drafted Kako at 9. Instead we get a F1 as well.

The trades to net us 3x 2nd round picks to use tonight are gravy and there could yet be more trades in the tank to help us get one of the sliders which still includes Shanahan.

I think we’ll be much more excited after Vosso makes the picks tonight. Lots of “Best Player Availiable “, “ I rated them 20 spots higher” nonsense that typically accompanies Essendon drafts.

Were in a good spot where based on who’s left on the board we should end up with some good midsize players with running power who help fill list holes

faible our initial draft hand was 1 first and 1 2nd. Traded away our 3rd and 4th last year to move up for Caddy and Roberts

The North pick trade seems to be poor on the surface but they are in a situation where they have a lot of top end picks in the last 4 years plus another this year.
They would believe that they will be moving up the ladder (rightly or wrongly) and Richmond F2 will more than likely be the first pick in round 2.
So they went after a guy they rate this year.
They are not in a situation where they absolutely need another top 10 pick next year.

I guess another risk factor is that the first pick in the second round is not necessarily pick 20, in the last 2 years it's basically been pick 30.

Their assessment of Whitlock must have been that he's basically the best tall in the draft, and they may well prove right on that but they're out on an island on that one.

I get that this is all hindsight and maybe Rosa didn’t want to take the risk, but

Bid for kako came after our first pick

We traded that pick 10 for very likely less than what north traded for pick 27.

Would it not have been better to wait and see how it played out tonight before trading it.

Rosa played it safe, but a little too safe in my opinion.
Mate you can’t say the bid for kako came after our pick, because it’s a totally different scenario if essendon still have that live pick on draft night. It totally changes everything and opposition clubs mindsets. We have no traded for less than what north got. They got pick 27 and likely a pick that will be 25+ next year

@faible our initial draft hand was 1 first and 1 2nd. Traded away our 3rd and 4th last year to move up for Caddy and Roberts

So we've gone from 1 x 1st, 1 x 2nd, no 3rd, no 4th to:

13 (Kako), 2 x 2nds, 1 x 3rd and an extra F1 whilst still keeping our F1 and F2 intact.

Seems like good business to me. Improved our hand this year and next year simultaneously.

I agree. There wouldve been an almost zero chance in this quality draft that we recieved a lowball offer if a bid came in for Kako.
Clubs would have been fighting each other to win our top 10 pick.
Who? Maybe geelong ? There’s north but I doubt they want to do that trade with us. Not a ton of clubs that were outside the 8 from this year prepared to offer up their first next year.

Jack Whitlock or Jobe Shanahan still on the board is exciting for us to still have a chance of getting them.
How far will our pick and a future second get us.

would be offering that to Tigers for 28
37 + F2, replaces their F2 they lost to North and they are not moving that far back..already loaded up on top end talent can take someone speculative who may still be there at 36. no need for forwards etc with Armstrong and Faull already.

Also would give North Melts for trading away their future first.

It's also a nice look at what we may be able to do going forward if this is the type of thinking we have.

We were at a disadvantage this year due to the lack of capital and where our first pick and bids fell.
What can we do when we have a surplus of resources? How does that set up up flexibility wise?

It's been posted elsewhere, I believe by both Jade and yourself, but the different approach is what is most refreshing.

It's a very not-Dodoro approach, maybe it'll fail, but I appreciate trying something new.

We might not walking away saying we 'won' the draft, but we've improved our hand for this and next year in an unspectacular fashion which is exactly the kind of thing Sydney and Geelong regularly manage to do.

I appreciate the multi-year view he's taken.

Well said.

Say Petracca did an about face during trade period and said 'get me anywhere else', we were in the box seat as the only Vic club with multiple future firsts. Say someone else pops out of the woodwork late on, getting that done early could well allow us to pry someone else loose, especially with bulk cap space.

There's obvious Harley Reid implications there as well.

I'm not copping people cracking the shits when Rosa said pre draft period he wanted to accumulate more top end picks in the next 2 draft and doing exactly that pretty easily and without fuss.

He started with 2 firsts and 2 seconds and ended with 3 firsts and 3 seconds and upgraded his 3rd rounder 6 or 7 spots, all it cost as far as player capital was Stringer who we wanted gone at all costs anyway.

How far will our pick and a future second get us

I think it depends on what pick we are looking to trade.

It’s about 10 picks to our first pick of the night. Id assume Richmond trade their first pick for an F1. After that probably costs a 2nd or 3rd to move up a few spots.

From our final pick in the 40s moving up 20 spots will have a steep price attatched. But once we start getting a few picks into the 2nd an F2 should get you into the early 30s.

As Far as next offseason. Having multiple picks gives you flexibility. Could chase Reid or Callaghan/Cadman could take two high picks if both teams suck. Could use that pick to upgrade at a positional logjam.

had a discussion on social media about the 2025. Apparently very academy heavy. Even if we have pick 10, it'll be the 10th available kid in 2025. People are dumb

I agree that the players available to us were likely not really what we need anyways so a win:win despite the simpletons thinking it was a poor decision to trade out
Most future drafts will have several Academy/ NGA players now so it will be what it is.

We don’t need more KPP players. This draft shows that what is most important is having a fleet of hard running skillful medium/smalls. Look at what GWS have done, litterally year after year picking the eyes out of the best smalls who can play up the ground.

The talls are sliding for a reason, you only need a handful on the list at a time, but having depth with dynamic smalls is by far more important.

Everyone’s a bargain at a certain price, and maybe we are getting into that territory with Shanahan, but man do we need more run across the board at our football club.

There is still risk tied to Melbourne’s future pick. It could easily end up as a pick in the 20s.
But that is not really the risk. We traded 9 for what ended up being a F1 two mid second rounds and a third round. If we keep 9 then it is we get that guy and Kako and then start trading out futures to match the bid.

As far as the best drafts go it was not because the top 20 was full of stars that made them. It was a few stars in the top 10 plus some very good on top of that in the top 20 but the kicker was the players that came outside the top 25.

I think every club would want another top 10 pick in this draft. Irrespective of their ladder position. Barring probably Richmond.

I just hope Rosa can hit on these draft picks. He was far too safe during the trade and now draft periods.

So far I hope to be wrong on him but so far I’m underwhelmed.
“Far too safe…”

Give it a rest, he’s taken a good deal which unless Melbourne shoot the lights out next year substantially improved our draft hand. We don’t need a dododo style trade and draft period trying to be too clever and getting burnt.

Holding out for a better deal had minimal additional upside and huge downside. Maybe a better deal would have emerged if we waited but it could have just as easily resulted in burning our first round pick on an early bid for Kako which would have been a disaster
