Recruiting AFL Draft Watch 2024 - What do we do, we don't have a top 10 pick?

Setterfield has played just about every position

Hobbs has been forward a fair bit

Durham use to be a half back and has played wing alot. Also has been playing half forward at stages the last 12 months

It really depends what way we want to go with the mids. Some top clubs keep to a solid 4, whilst others push to the 6 mark with mids rotating heavily
Some would say that to be versatile you would need to play a few positions at a better than average result and not simply just play there. :)

Yes Setterfield has played wing and half back and half forward but it has not been at an consistent level which is why we got him for next to nothing off Carlton and why we only signed him to 1 year after all the trade chips had fallen.

I don't really rate his forward craft and his kicking isn't damaging enough for half back IMO. He can play different roles in the middle (inside, wing, run with) but yeah.
You did not just put wing in the midfield group despite you being one of the champions of specialized wings :p:)

It's still a midfield role. Just like ruck is a midfield role. Doesn't mean Durham should be playing ruck though.

Youd think guys like

Lachie Jaques
Ollie Warburton

Without watching them would suit what were chasing and be in our range

The

Tom Sims
James Barrett
Bailey Mckenzie
Charlie West

May be the order for the KPFs
Not sure how you could say a player would suit without watching them?
I think Barret has some top end ability but not necessarily as a key position forward.
With our draft picks you just hope someone does a Luke Parker type slide.
I probably think Gabriel Stumpf is ahead of sims, McKenzie and west as a key forward just because of his athleticism and what he could become.
He has a lot of forward craft to learn and will be a slow burn.

See in the past what Essendon has gotten wrong is that they act like versatile players are saviours and have hand no real development plan.

These balanced versatile players have whatever position they played as juniors. That’s the starting point.
Except that the best players in juniors typically get put where they have the most impact - eg midfield rather than, say, small defender.

Purely based on size, position and likely draft position. We will atleast be targetting one halfback flank/winger or a player capable of playing there, which is most non talls

That would be why Barrett is rated to be a pick outside the top 30. We dont have top 10 picks, everyone is going to have issues. Weve seen that based on this forum that even top 10 picks all are seen to have issues let alone those in the 40s. Some will see him as a better defender but not totally remove him as a potential forward its not like he hasnt performed there

Ive not seen Stumpf, but the testing is amazing. Id be more than happy with that, clubs will really be backing themselves with those athletic traits because some would see that as harder to improve than say footy game sense

It would be interesting if they went with say a Strumpf as that would mean they have more confidence in Wright and HJ than others here

Question on trades. Essendon will want to offload 28 and 31 pre Kako bid and then buy back in. Problem is not having to pay too steep a price to get back into 2024.

Proposed trade

Eagles F2 and F3 for 28 and 31 when Kako bid made
Essendon F2 for 26 after Kako bid

I suggest it works for both clubs. You would then have 2 x F1 and an expected low F2 to get back into 2024 even earlier if you wanted, but worst case is 26

Trades would both pass the AFL stand alone test as well

I think we can get an F2 and F3 for one of those picks, let alone both.

Yes but it is a guaranteed buying back into 2024 that you get with the same club in both transaction. Where do you expect to buy back in and what do you think it will cost?
Not sure. I think our best bet is to package up one of those picks and our F2 to get a F1 and a later pick this year then use the other two get an F2 and F3 combo. Then use the F1 to get back in late if there's a player we want.

I'm sure Rosa and co have a plan.

Yeah I agree, in a vacuum the above wouldn’t be enough as you trade more for the present and strong drafts usually.

In reality, I’d imagine dons won’t care to much about the package as it will be more about satisfying a 3rd club.

I.e dons will offer 28&31 and want 25 in this draft and a f3 or something (just an example with no thought).

It’ll just be about connecting the two teams so all 3 are happy.

that is pretty much what this is - 28 and 31 for 26 plus a low F3. Plus you would expect the Eagles F2 to be better than Dons F2.

First round looks likely to be 27 picks man. 26 will really be 30.

And 28 will be 32 and 31 will be 35.

Look at the net deal as I think it works.

By all means buy back in earlier but I think it will take a massive premium in a stand alone trade

Nah 28 probably only moves to 30 and 31 probably 32 or 33 as things stand.

Also, as things stand I can see North wanting 28 or 31. Same with Geelong. They can easily give us an F2 and F3 for just one pick. Which gives us more flexibility around our F2 and the other about pushing them into a F1 and using that to trade into a late teens or early 20's pick.

I'm sure your club has discussed this with us but you wouldn't be our only option.

Shaun Grigg did 🙂

why is Zak Johnson not spoken about more highly? injuries? form? or something on his actual footballing ability?
Zak like Luca Grego lacks some high level class for mine even though both had some terrific games at under 18 level.
Zak played quite a few games playing as an unaccountable half back winning possessions which does not equate to afl footy by and large.
I think Zak has a chance to land on a list late or in the rookie draft.
Interestingly good friends with caddy and kako.

Stumpf reminds me of Nathan Thompson and Nick larkey back in the day.
He shows just flashes.
He could flop really easily but geez he at least as afl athleticism which a lot of essendon players do not have.

My bad, I totally misread it 😂. But yeah I see it as being aiming for an upgrade and future pick. 26 being the minoriest of upgrades.

Be interesting to see how it plays out.

Yeah. But that’s the point. Some positions are more valuable/difficult than others. Aka Don’t draft Small defenders

If guys are good enough to play AFL they have likely played an important position as a junior

ie KPD, KPF, inside mid, outside mid, Small Forward Ruck.

3rd talls, Wings, Small Defenders and Pressure forwards are dime a dozen.

Just develop them there.

Although it’s hardly news that Essendon’s previous list management team weren’t very good at their jobs

Im not sure i really like the 18-30 range that much for us, so id almost prefer futures

But this is the best deal that weve seen that is realistic so far

If North now need another pick we should be looking to move 28 or 31 (hopefully 31 to North for their F2)
